Schools of the 2013 SA Super Rugby squad players

Taking the South African Superugby wider squads for 2013 as they appear on Wikipedia, here is the long list of the 202 players with the schools that 197 of them attended. The 5 Kings foreigners are overlooked.

Just for a bit of fun a homegrown percentage has been added. The formula used is pretty simple.

*100% if a player schooled and played junior rugby at the SR franchise he now represents.
*50% if a player either schooled or played junior rugby at the SR franchise he now represents.
*25% if a player only played part of his junior rugby at the SR franchise he now represents.
*10% bonus if the player joined an SR franchise’s junior team from a school region that did not have an SR team.
For the purpose of the exercise because of the very close connection Boland was considered part of the Stormers schools region but not SWD and the Limpopo schools were treated as Bulls territory.
* With everyone else in SA being nasty to the Kings, their formula tries to cut them some slack. With it being their first year of SR, the junior rugby requirement is overlooked and EP, Border and SWD school players are all regarded as 100% homegrowns (My SARU noddy badge is in the post).

Anyway the results show that by far and away the leaders of the HG% are the Stormers with ±63%. The Western Cape is rich in rugby talent. We see it every year with plenty of their schools scattered around the Top 20 rugby rankings. They also have one excellent rugby university and another fairly good one. Add in the WP Rugby Institute for good measure.  The process from start to finish is working really well for the WP slash Stormers at the moment. It’s resulted in a very success conversion ratio of local school players to senior rugby stars down south.

Surprisingly the Sharks, who generally carry the tag of import merchants are comfortably in second place hovering around the 50% mark. Fact: KwaZulu-Natal does not produce as many talented school rugby players as the Cape. This is evident in that the Sharks only have 9/40 schoolboy locals in their squad whereas the Stormers have 21/41. The Sharks are however able to capitalise on their accuracy in the recruitment market and the work done at the Sharks Academy. As a result their success rate in converting “imported” schoolboys into senior rugby stars borders on being close to off the charts.

The Kings (±41) just just edge out the Cheetahs (±40%). The Cheetahs posed a unique challenge because of the combination of Free State with the Griquas. The Griquas don’t have a proper junior rugby programme per se, so factoring this into account, the Cheetahs are doing a lot better than the calculation suggests.

That leaves the Bulls to bring up the tail on about 39%. Perhaps the biggest shock is that in their squad of 37, only 7 Bulls played school rugby in the Blue Bulls or Limpopo regions. So this means as things stand, the Bulls are bigger importers of schoolboy talent than the Sharks.

@rugbyfan: Same asNWK (Upington) in my young days. Some legends played for them like Herklaas Engelbrecht. Nowadays they are Griquas Country Districts. Could never figure out Alexander bay / Oranjemund is closer to Wellington then Upington and many players from that clubs had to play in Upington and had to drive there on weekends. but then in those days everything was different.

@iRugby: iRugby jy is heeltemal reg.

@BOG: I did not suggest anything of the like. I dont think people from that areas went to Boet to watch an EP game anyway…They were more part of the Old “Noord-Oos Kaap”…Use to play in yellow/gold rugby shirts with black collars and in the Sport Pienaar….and where traditionally more swayed towards OFS. From Graaff-Reinnet northwards you will find more Cheetah supporters than anything else. The EP supporters was mostly centralized from Humansdorp through to PE and the immediate surrounding areas and up to Grahamstown which I think was about the border for any EP support!

@BoishaaiPa: Im not questioning the loyalty, however misplaced, of those people from PE, Despatch, Uitenhage areas- they were OP!!! (Shame) And even I remember Gawie Carelse, Frans Erasmus, Eben Olivier, Hannes Marais ens—, but the majority in the areas which I mentioned, were not EP fans. To suggest that players like Os du Randt(Adelaide) and Johan Goosen(Burgersdorp) were EP fans, are wrong

@BoishaaiPa: Pulling your leg, I know many Matie OB’s in business and many of them very successful, but, likewise also know many successful guys that did not complete school, did not study after school, or that studied at various other tertiary institutions. It’s definitely a fairly good university, but not the sole guarantee for success.

@beet: Beet, I lived in the area from 1976 to 1983 and I can only talk about my own immediate group of friends and relatives and I most probably watched every game EP played at Boet Erasmus in those days as my dad was involved with EP rugby. The fans all shouted for EP when they played at “The Boet”, but mostly because of the knowledge that the chance of EP winning against their “real” team is very slim!..So I was always a WP supporter since my early days growing up but when they came to play against EP , I will shout for EP that day, at least to give the poor EP lads some support, well knowing that they have but a slim chance to win. If they can pull of an upset win, well, then at least I supported the winning team and if they lose, well, my team won then!..I think it was like that for most of the supporters and thus we all shouted for EP when they played at The Boet!…My friends supported OFS and WP…there were no Tvl or N-Tvl supporters in our group and Natal was playing B-league rugby!..The good old days when the Banana Boys knew where their place was!…..

Most of the players come from PE, Uitenhage & Despatch area and a very strong EP base. Bulls is surprisingly disappointing. Could not believe their schools produce so little to the S15 squads.

@beet: Its from that era that I am drawing my conclusions. Most kids in the areas I have mentioned- Molteno, Burgersdorp, Steynsburg, Lady Grey, Dordrecht, Barkley East, Elliot, Maclear , Adelaide ect—,traditionally went to Bloemfontein to school (not only Grey) where they became “indoctrinated”. Some went to Queenstown and fewer to EL. But, certainly, most were not EP supporters

@BOG: I can well believe that. Fans in the E/Cape haven’t had professional rugby team as such to get behind for many years now. Question: what was their fan base like in the regions you mentioned during the 1980s when EP rugby was a lot stronger and teams like WP, NTvl, Tvl and FS made regular trips to Boet Erasmus?

@beet: If you look at the Eastern Cape region, you will find very few in the region, consisting of the old NE Cape and Border, who were EP supporters or who support the Kings now(who in his right mind would. I think its fair to say, and perhaps Queenian would bare me out, is that most in the Border/Transkei are, are Shark supporters while many, if not most, in the NE Cape area, are Cheetah supporters. Of course, there are exceptions- even a few fools around who support the BBS and WP. This idea that everyone in the “bigger” E Cape, are EP/Kings supporters is misleading and deceptive.

@beet: You are right, interesting to look at the Kings stats, it show they have a very good schoolboy and rugby culture in place. If they can get it right via their Academy and hold on their own players they sure can become a power in the future. Thats all the stats shows. Poaching maybe a to strong/sensitive word.

@PaarlBok: Your stat is interesting but bear in mind that by using the term “poached” you are focusing on the pull and forgetting about the push factors. Some of the SR players attended schools in regions where they did not have Superugby teams. They did not need that much incentive to leave. For example Keegan Daniel came to the Sharks Academy without a contract.

I would therefore say you need to focus on players that come from SR regions only for “Poached”

Affies have been a dominant force in school sport for the last 40 + years. In the 1980’s they won the Old Admin cup 6 years in a row.
Affies have never really dominated Pta Boys High. Those Souties are a brave bunch who like to kick the “Rockspider’s” backside. Always hard and tough games.

@Moppie: Do you think the Affies boys father was making this up? By the way, if you look back on Affies record you will see that they have only really dominated in the last 15 years, maybe a little longer. I stand to be corrected but PBHS were the stronger before this period. Something changed. I do know I am commenting on something that I do not know the details of so really cant comment any further.

@All Black: All Black Affies dont give bursaries. If you know the school and especially the headmaster, Dr Edwards, you would also know the remark that the “blue bulls put the u/14 team together” is far from the truth. He would never allow outsiders to dictate the school on any subject, let alone rugby. Traditionally Affies has been a strong Rugby and Sport school. Their u/14’s weren’t an exception on the rule. 8-O

@Moppie: No bursaries at Affies? No help from the Bulls in getting boys to Affies? My son was hosted by an Affies family when we played away and the father said to him, Dont worry about the score tomorrow, this team has been put together by the Bulls and they are the best from the Bulls U13 Craven Week. The score was 11-9.

@BOG: You are dead right i do not think it is the schools that are the problem the BB are the one doing it.

I would suggest that no kids may sign contracts with rugby unions until midway through there final year this will stop alot of this rubbish going on.

@beet: Just one correction. I too, am familiar with many of the people in the Mpumalanga platteland. Not all are BBs supporters- there are some who know something about rugby. I also dont think that there are schools in Tshwane which buy players- the BBs do the buying for them. An excellent example is the kid from Queens recently. We should also look beyond just a single team or season.

@All Black: All Black, if you take Garankuwa, Hammanskraal.Mabopane and Soshanguve’s schools, then I can understand the 9% schools playing rugby. In Pretoria, apart from Affies, you have a “super schools”(more than 2000 kids in the school) competition(Wonderboom/John Vorster/Waterkloof/Garsfontein/Zwartkop/Eldoraign). You have the big schools(Oos Moot/Montana/Overkruin/Wilgers). These schools live for their rugby. Apart from these schools, the kids from schools in the far North and Mpumalanga normally come to the University of Pretoria. I myself come from the Mpumalanga “Platteland” and I can assure you the Blue Bulls biggest and most loyal fans is from the “platteland.
If the Blue Bulls say their pool of feeder schools is small their is something major wrong!
The core of the all conquering Blue Bulls Craven team of 2012 came from Affies, a school who don’t buy players at all(despite all the remarks from the friends from the Cape and Free state).
    The star players from that team(No’s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,10, 12, 13, 15) is homegrown talent.

@BoishaaiPa: No doubt that Maties are the top uni in the WC, but as a avid Ikey supporter (me and my dad probably being the only boere supporting Ikeys at the Newlands Intervarsities in the 80’s) it’s good that they have been quite competitive over the past few years. Note I (clearly) went to neither, my tertiary education was completed at the alma mater of the great Neil Burger and Corne Krige in the early 90’s.

@BOG: It is easy enough in your old age you to confuse the reasons for waking up in a cold sweat….it has nothing to do with the fact that you were a WP supporter but all to do because you are exposed to Cheetah rugby!!..It is only natural that it will become less frequent as you get use to loosing!…

I hate to admit it, but I too, spent about 5 years drinking and partying in maroon. Where this intensive program permitted it, I managed to study a little as well. There are still people who try to tell me that the early mornings during winter, are cold, wet and windy. I only ventured outside on those rare occasions when the sun shone. What I do know, and I am still recovering from that,is that it effected me to the extent that I became a WP supporter. The trauma is still there- I sometimes wake up with a cold sweat, but thankfully, its becoming less frequent with age and exposure to Cheetah rugby. In my days, the only interaction between UCT and Maties, was the competition between the Commercial Departments. Maties and Ikeys played of course, but as two clubs and not intervarsity. Needless to say, BHP was only a sparkle in his dads eye. The sparkle only changed after his birth.

@BOG: BOG – yes – that is exactly it. We need to get thta feeder system going again.

The system that always amazes (and impresses) me – is the British F.A. Cup. There is Manchester United playing “Pitsonderwater” and there are a few hundred/thousand avid fans in purple and grey saying “We wuz robbed – and should have beaten Man U”. And then year after year some of those underdogs actually make it through a few rounds.

Passion all the way down to the grass roots – and those teams probably only pull the girlfriends most matches – but they keep on.

I fully agree there should be an emphasis on all levels of the game. Even the Blitzbokke don’t get the crowds normally.

Professionalism and TV have killed the game.

Even cricket – I remember capacity crowds at the B&H day nighters a decade or two back. Now even the provincial T20’s are poorly attended.

@Moppie: Unfortunately the pool of schools that the Bulls can rely on is very small. At a presentation that the Bulls gave, the stats were scary. Something like only 9% of schools in the region play rugby. This is a long way from the days when the Bulls relied on the army camps to provide their players. Of the Natal schools side in 1985 every player who was going to army before studying had their camp call ups changed and ended up at PD School in Voortrekkerhoogte. This pool has now gone and thus the Bulls have to look outside of their zone.

@Rugger fan: Lets be honest- club rugby was destroyed by “professional” rugby and although attempts are being made to revive it, I am afraid, its just not going to happen. Several years ago, the sports clubs were central to a lot of social activities. Not so any more. And as I pointed out recently, we all have egos(unfortunately) When a youngster is at school, playing first team, a few thousand watches him on a Saturday. He is the bees knees- even in a small school. That all changes when they leave school where they are lucky if his mother and girl friend goes to watch him. So, motivation, becomes a challenge. And this applies even to those who are involved in representative teams at U19 and 21 level. We can see it on TV- the stands are empty.

What percentages are you talking about? Statistical manipulation? @Moppie: @Moppie – you are right – we need to develop our rugby players – and a big gap is the number of good school boys that do not progress to club level. Especially not the top tier guys – but the rest of them. Most guys you meet around a braai – stopped playing after school – after a season or so in club rugby.

To the Queenians (and anyone else who might know):
Is Rocco Jansen related to Marco Jansen, who played for Queens in 2000/2001?A very good player whose rugby career was tragically cut short by a permanent knee injury.

Thanks beet – interesting breakdown. You could probably have added the Pumas as a Bulls feeder province too (except it would have made no difference as the only Pumas in the group are not playing for the Bulls :) ).
