Glenwood has confirmed that their Invitation XV team for the Damelin Night Series kicking off on Friday, 01 February 2013, will be a blend of their extended 2nd XV squad which includes loads of boys that played 4ths and 5ths rugby in 2012. This means there should be some decent talent on display in Glenwood colours, as well as plenty of incentive to produce the goods, with indications that their coaching staff will be on the look out for players who impress.
First game up for Glenwood is the Northwood 2nd XV at 16h00. Northwood has been hard at work in the offseason. They have added a few new faces to the 1st team and the coaching staff. As a result they have a bit more depth down the line. This should up their level of competitiveness in the 2nds and transform this opening game of the Night Series 2013 against the Glenwood team into quite a mouthwatering affair. It’s possibly also a dress-rehearsal for the 2nd XV final on 22 February, although defending 2nd XV champs George Campbell and hosts Port Natal might have something to say about that during the course of the tournament.
The Northwood 2nd XV was withdrawn from the tournament along with the Port Shepstone 2nd XV.
The entire Damelin Night Series is being played at Port Natal.

@HORSEFLY NO.1:i tell you give me any of these teams in October for a Year and i will guarantee you that by the following year , I will have them beating a Glenwood 2nd Team and a Northwood 1st Team and a DHS 1st Team
@CyndiAtRugby: hey , still looking forward to your photos soon, , agree i think the inclusion of these schools against 2nd teams etc will only do Rugby SBR good
@GreenBlooded:
Or give them the 4ths so it’ll be a REAL achievement if they win!!!
@CyndiAtRugby: Yup – I think both of those schools 1st teams would give the Glenwood 5ths a decent game!!
@Green Hopper: I have been tackled, sworn at, pushed, shoved and cheered but I have NEVER flashed at SBR (probably have jinxed it now )
I would love to see GW playing both Kloof and Hillcrest. I live in that area so get loads of banter regarding the level of rugby.
@Greenwood: My son attended a “Speed, Agility and Quickness” training programme over the holidays. The boys came from various schools and attended the training which went over the Christmas/New Year period – this show that boys from all schools are equally dedicated.
@Greenwood: this is where Glenwood should send a team, share the love
@CyndiAtRugby: hey will look forward to your pictures when you get back, i am sure you will be there in a “flash” lol
Cindy – many of the 2nd tier schools have also been training over December holidays – Werda, Gelofte – this shows just how seriously SBR is taken – I would still like to see the likes of GWD , DHS , Westville play staggered games against Gelofte Kloof Werda Hillcrest etc
Gelofte have a nite series as well coming up shortly next week or the week after – I hear some of the games will be at the same time as games @ Porties – I will see if I can get hold of a schedule and post on this blog
I live in Pinetown so I will have to pick and choose except of course when the Chappie Wrappers are playing at Porties ….
So sad to be missing out on this tournament. (I’m off to Paarl and CT for the week).
It has been really good to see the intensity of the training at the school across all the age groups and in this heat.
Now just waiting for those rugby poles to go up again…
@Greenwood: I really enjoyed last year, would really like to know the squad selected, last year there where trials at Dokkies and who will be the two coaches. So hopefully @beet will get all this information for us, in fact all the squads would be good and a review of each team
I still think it was an ideal opportunity for GW and the Nite Series for an additional Team made up of 3rd and 4th Team players to play in the 2nd team level,
As there is no “Tour” this year, the 2nd team can prepare properly for the 2nd team Tour to Monument in a few weeks and go in better prepared, , not sure if Management think about things like this, and work on a Plan , and not just concentrate on 1st Team , forgetting that the 2nd and 3rd Team last year played better rugby then the 1st team should have highlighted the need to take opportunities such as these and prepare teams,
Even possible entering a 3rd Team into a competition somewhere, surely there is a Tournament they can enter
@Horsie, what is good to see for me is the improvement in depth at Glenwood with the B side coming 2nd. Under14’s looking good too, hopefully that is the case for the other sports too…
I know we’ve already seen an article on HSSM but this is interesting to read
http://www.wbhs.co.za/?p=1643
GWD winning 4/5 U14 races and WBHS struggling to win at U15. I think their U14 will have a very long season with GWD and Kearsney having good teams whilst the U15 will also have a fairly long season with DHS, Clifton both having excellent teams here. DHS U15 apparently flippin’ good in the Fly, just got out-touched by Westville last week…
Hopper – yup ! Glenwood did OK at Porties last year imagine 3 & 4 th team players coming up against 1st teams – you could see the guys at first were a bit twitchy – plenty of knock on’s and bad passing but I think they acquitted themselves quite well and improved as the tourno progressed – great atmosphere last year – looking forward to it
Glenwood never played in the 2nd team jerseys last year , they will play in Chappie wrappers i am sure, who is the Coach and the team/Squad, i certainly think it was a mistake tacking them down to the 2nd team level, this team last year consisted on mainly 2nd and 3rd team players and the splattering of 4th team , but IMHO they would have made the final (edited) better coaching decisions, sorry , but it was simply that that made the difference ., Glenwood also have the power to play in the 1st team level here and this doesn’t pass on the power and depth of the rugby , I would rather have entered a 3rd team into the 2nds level
Unfortunately it seems like both Northwood and Port Shepstone have withdrawn their second teams from the Night Series. They did however provide adequate notification. The organisers have a new 2nd XV programme but at this stage it does not seem like they redistributed this to anyone.
On Friday GC will play Pinetown at 15:45and Glenwood will play Port Natal at 16:45
@Greenwood: I think what is not good is that NW withdrew their team last year but no-one seems to know about it. Someone has dropped the ball big-time!!
Grasshopper – Glenwood should play in the 2nd teams colours – have you guys noticed the suttle
colour variations in the old chappie wrapper jerseys ? – the knitted type not the new synthetic shiny ones ?
if i’m correct the 2nd team colours seem to match those of the Glenwood Old boys of days gone by
what happened to NW 2nds anyone know ? this is not good
I will take some videos of the GWD games and post some on you tube
@Grasshopper: I very much doubt they will play in the 1st XV strip and I even doubt they will play in the 2nd XV jersey. I think they use this as a warm-up / trial session so wouldn’t like any losses to affect the season record.
……was received by them? (typo from above message).
Beet – is this the latest program? Maybe phone Glenwood and find out who their new opposition is. Can’t beleive the organisers would not know if NW withdrew ther team. NW_Knight – are you sure the communique from NW?
@Beet, could you please post the Glenwood team lineup? It would be interesting to see as this will gave a indication of what the 1st IV will look look like this year.
@Beet: Northwood withdrew their 2nd side last year already, so not sure who Glenwood will be playing.
@Beet, won’t the team play in the chappie bubble gum jersey’s and not the 1st side’s green and white?
