Big times ahead for Menlopark
It may not be the perfect schedule but it’s very close to one. Menlopark rugby is on the rise and their 2015 fixture list speaks volumes about their focus and ambitions to be regarded as a top rugby school.…

An article with the header “New Kids on the Block” appearing in the recent edition of regional newspaper The Bulge added warmth to the welcoming function attended by three new Dalians Solomon Makhubela (Leopards Craven Week 2014), Oratile Mabusela (Leopards Craven Week 2014) and Thabiso Msiza (Leopards Craven Week 2014) in King William’s Town.…
At Paul Roos, 2015 marks the start of their 150th year of existence. However the first few days of the new school year saw some of their avid adult rugby supporters stopping to focus on a disappointment rather than the celebrations that are set to come at the school. The unhappiness was caused when it was discovered that one of their top sportsmen (rugby and athletics) from last year’s under-15 age-group would not be returning to the school as he had joined rivals Paarl Gymnasium.…
Ahead of what’s expected to be a cracker of a rugby season for Selborne comes the news that Andrew Dewar will replace now retired principal Sam Gunn who has provided the East London school with 21 years of unbelievable service. Interestingly Andrew Dewar is the deputy headmaster at Queen’s College just like Mr Gunn was before he joined Selborne back in 1993.…
Grey High School, Eastern Province Craven Week and SA Schools flyhalf Curwin Bosch is the Craven Week Player of the Year for 2014.…
Prop Lupumlo Mguca who was one of only eight under-17 players to have represented the SA Schools team in under-18 internationals last year, is jetting off to New Zealand to attend Burnside, a co-ed high school in Christchurch, home to the Crusaders Super Rugby team.…
It might feel like a case of déjà vu for Grey High School in Port Elizabeth right now. They have learnt that they will be losing a second head coach to professional rugby in a little over a year. …
Eldoraigne from Centurion near Pretoria have decided to drop down to the Blue Bulls Region Macro Schools B-section for the Beeld this year. With Centurion High also in the B-section and Affies no longer part of the Beeld, the Blue Bulls A-section is looking very small. Chances are the Eldoraigne move will encourage the remaining A-section Marco schools to press ahead with the formation of a proper Noordvaal premier league. Where this will leave the Beeldtrofee with its rich tradition, remains to be determined.
The Blue Bulls Macro Schools sections now look like this:…

I have to say that in my mind Nelspuit Old Boy Duane Vermeulen should have walked away with SA rugby’s big award for being the country’s best rugby player in 2013 already. To me it’s debatable whether or not Vermeulen has had a better season this year compared to last year. Nevertheless I have to applaud the IRB Rugby Player of the Year 2014 nominee for being consistently good these past two seasons. Vermeulen is up for the SARU Player of the Year again this year…
The St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown December 2014 newsletter named Andrew Royle as their new Director of Rugby. He replaces Graeme College bound Allan Miles who’s achievements were also highlighted in the same newsletter.…
Michaelhouse turned down an invitation to play at Wilkeklawer 2015 in Kimberley. Had they accepted, they would have been the first private school to ever take part in the festival which is widely regarded as the top school rugby festival in South Africa. …
Little private school Southdowns, who play in the Beeld Trofee competition for small schools, has built up a bit of a reputation over the last few years for “acquiring” top school players from prominent Border high schools. Now it’s their turn to experience what it’s like to lose a promising youngster.
Kwezi Mafu, a highly rated loose-forward who represented the Blue Bulls under-16 team at Grant Khomo Week in 2013 and in 2014, has left Southdowns College in Centurion, Pretoria to join Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.…
Updated after it was revealed that Garsfontein will not be playing Paul Roos at the St John’s Easter Rugby Festival
Garsfontein will take on South African school rugby powerhouses Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gymnasium as well as Nelspruit, the Beeldtrofee champions 2014 in the space of just over a week during April 2015. Add Outeniqua somewhere in the middle and that’s four seriously tough matches in just eight days. Once all the Easter holiday fixtures have been finalised, this assignment, given it’s time frame will in all likelihood be right up there at the top of the list of most difficult of all for 2015. …

Glenwood and Maritzburg College will only have one proper inter-schools rugby day in 2015. The return match which has been a fixture on the KZN school rugby calendar for ages has been scrapped. In the same 2015 season, Maritzburg College will break ground by playing Westville in proper home and away inter-schools fixtures for the very first time.
Maritzburg College has indicated that their decision regarding Glenwood was nothing more than a matter of logistics:…
The Leopards have been very competitive at under-19 level over the years and its no longer that big a surprise when they beat one of the big unions during the junior Currie Cup, simply because they have good coaching, good facilities and they attract many talented players their way. This annual prosperity would not been possible if it were not for the close working relationship that the union has with the North-West University or Pukke as they are so often called.…

During the course of the year the IRB is called on to clarify grey areas of the law book. Below are a few of the interesting issues that have arisen in 2014.
The first ties in nicely with the “crocodile roll” (many names to define this), an increasingly popular method whereby a support player deals with a so called “jackal” from the defending team who’s already into a very low position over a tackled player and about to attempt a turnover, by gripping the “jackal” around his upper-body and rolling him over to the side. Here’s a short Youtube video of the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzge8Hs1TN8.
According to the KZN newspaper the Daily News, more than 50 schoolbags belonging to Hillcrest High players attending a touch rugby tournament at Kings Park in Durban on Friday, were stolen out of their bus. The theft happened within an hour of their arrival at Kings Park and none of the bus windows were broken. …
