Maritzburg College has named a team of 1st XV hopefuls combined with last year’s players to take on the hosts at the Voortrekker Night Series in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 27 February. With numerous players either unavailable due to summer sports commitments or injury, College’s first outing of 2015 will be a chance for the new coaching staff to try out a few positional ideas as well as for fringe players to make an early impression.

Contract dispute sidelines 2 schoolboy rugby players in the Free State

According to a report in Netwerk24 (link) two promising schoolboy rugby players that joined Welkom Gymnasium from Hennie Cilliers in Virginia this year are not allowed to play rugby for any school except the Virginia Sports Academy (Hentie Cilliers) until a dispute that has arisen over their respective contracts with the Academy are laid to rest. The Welkom magistrate has enforced this until the charges for breach of contract is resolved by arbitration on 19 March. The boys are from George and Port Elizabeth and the report mentions that the academy had already spent a large sum of money on them.…

News out of Durban North is that Northwood has welcomed several new foreigner students to their school. It’s unconfirmed but believed that as many as five boys from the Netherlands and Zimbabwe stand a good chance of being incorporated into their 1st XV rugby squad for 2015, which if all goes well should improve the school’s rugby outlook for this season.…
