@Gungets Tuft: I remember watching Gisborne as a New Boy (Std 6) against us in ’96. They had 2 of the most skilful schoolboy centers I had ever seen at the time. With size to boot.I think they were recruited from Samoa, one of them played Super Rugby later on – forgot his name. The absolutely annihilated us. They played Selborne two days later with their 2nd string team (because they thought it’d be a walk in the park given we had smashed Selborne twice already), and lost. I think it was their only loss in that SA tour.

Needless to say, us New Boys had a torrid time for the rest of the rugby season (3 weeks), with sing song after sing song during both breaks…it didnt help that we then lost to Queens for the first time in 5 years in the last game of the season.

@Playa:  No, in those years College had massive fixture lists by the standards of those years. There were tours overseas, we played Queens, GCB each of those years, Selbourne, Wymberg, Grey High, Framesby, Nico Malan, Bishops. 93 – 18 games, 94 – 20 games, 95 – 16 games, 96 – 17 games, 97 – 23 games, 98 – 15 games and 99 – 17 games.

    1992 – 1996 – played 98, won 79, drawn 4, lost 15. KZN losses in there were DHS (3), House (1), Voortrekker (1). Others are GCB (2), Boishaai (1), Dale (1), Wellington and Gisborne NZ (1 each), Tonbridge (1), KES (1), PBHS (1), Affies (1).

@GreenBlooded: In my 5 years I don’t think we ever beat College, the dark 90’s we could call it. It was atrocious, more like can we keep them below 50 this time out. Shocking years for Glenwood, but at least we knew we were playing fair and with genuine Glenwood boys…

@Gungets Tuft: I’m gonna have to dig a bit deeper for our 50 pointers. I do know though that waaaaay back in 1924, we gave Queens 64-0 at home and 55-0 away.

@Playa: Actually Kearsney did take 50 or more, but the last time way back in 1978, before that was 1957 I think.

We stopped playing GCB in 2008 so might well have escaped a scalping or two since then as well, although playing Affies every year hasn’t been a walk in the park.

@Grasshopper: I witnessed 10 College vs Glenwood matches in my 5 years at Glenwood between 1984 and 1988 – we only won once – at Glenwood in 1986. The mayhem that errupted from that win I can still remember – can still remember that heart-stopping drop-goal al-la Joel Stransky in the RWC I will never forget. I think we even got given the following Friday off as a celebration. These were the days before recruiting, shenanigans, steroids and all the off-field antics – I wonder if they will ever return?

@Grasshopper: Fair point regarding playing in Bloem. Last fixture in Bloem was in 1992, losing 18-26.Returned the favour in King the following year, winning 26-7 the following year.

Played 12 times in history. Was a regular fixture till ’93 and was canned for ‘political reasons’ I am told. Played a St Stithians in ’94 (6-30 to a weak GCB side – one of 3 losses that year, the other 2 were to Selborne), then again in 2004 at St Johns, losing 12-40 and 2006 at Grey PE Fest going down 3-36 – Dale’s heaviest loss against GCB.

@Playa: Yes, but it relates to how often you play them. Glenwood have played Grey Bloem in an annual fixture for about a decade now having to go up to Bloem every other year. Ask any school coach what is the toughest challenge, Grey Bloem in Bloem in winter…….it’s tough!

@Gungets Tuft: Glenwood’s biggest win over College was 47-10 on Goldstones in 2008 and our biggest loss again on Goldstones in 1996 when I was in matric, 61-13….eish!!!

@Gungets Tuft:    Hear hear! Proud to say Dale have never taken 50 from GCB. Most points were 40 (12-40 loss in 2004).

Only Selborne (twice in 2007  ), Pretoria Boys High in 2008 and Affies in 2013 (Dale’s biggest loss ever 53-0) have pulled it off. Here’s to another 133 years of it never happening again!

College take more than 70 three times, once by Monnas and twice from GCB, all in the last 8 years. More than 50, add 4 times, 3 times by Affies and once by KES (2009). Once again, all in the last 8 years. 50 exactly, twice, GCB again, and then last year Westville.

Before 2005, niks, nada … so here’s hoping for another 118 years before it happens again ..

To balance the books, we have handed out 50 and more 48 times, no local schools escape, except Kearsney. But, go back far enough and there are perfect storms in every schools life …

@Vin: Yep, but you have recently adding Monnas and Affies for the past 2 years. Before then the fixture list was far too easy playing only about 11 games in the season vs Parktown, St John’s, St Stithians, Helpmekaar, St David’s etc…..not exactly tough fixtures for a big school like KES, not disrespect to those great smaller private schools…..Glenwood would be a great one to add…28 teams will all have a game…

@Grasshopper: about time KES started filling up their fixture list with some tougher names, now they need to decide if we want to remain there or go back to the traditional fixtures. In ’86 we played Grey PE, Selbourne, Monnas, Wynberg, GCB, PBHS and included all the traditional fixtures.

    @Vin: Yep, 74-4 in 1986….not pretty at all. In 1991 they beat Westville 84-3….1995 Queens 50-0, 2000 Paul Roos 42-13, 2000 PBHS 59-0, 2000 Selborne 54-3, 2002 Grey PE 41-3, 2003 Selborne 57-0, 2003 Outeniqua 58-0, 2005 Glenwood 58-3, 2006 College 50-3, 2007 Glenwood 81-0, 2007 College 86-3, 2007 Marais Viljoen 66-0, 2008 PBHS 82-10, 2009 Boishaai 50-8, 2010 EG Jansen 45-0, 2011 Duineveld 83-3, 2012 Kearsney 58-10 and 2013 Glenwood 68-7…….nearly every school has taken a hiding from Grey Bloem at some stage. Especially if playing them in Bloem…….KES need not panic…

I think the organisers decided that KES red and Paul Roos maroon too close in colour for a TV game so one had to change from their traditional strip. Would have been a lot smarter if these things were ironed out long before the tournament, giving one of the schools an oppo to organise a proper away or second jersey.

@Grasshopper: really don’t like the green jerseys our alternate jersey used to be white. In 1986 GW got 74 from grey as well we watched that game was one of the best Grey sides they had 6 SA schools players in the side as well as 2 springboks to be. KES vs Grey that same year was a nail biter with grey taking it in the last move final score 22-18. KES going to battle this year I think a lot of decisions to be made going forward.

@Redblack White: The teams above are copy and paste of info sent through by WK organisers but reliably informed that player you are thinking of is back in WC.

Like RugbyMad said, 21 is most likely Ruan van Rensburg who played Glenwood u16 last year and was at KERF in place of Chris Bredell who is/was injured. The schools should be providing team lists prior to games to avoid this confusion.

I watched most of Grey’s games yesterday. Overall the best drilled teams of the day. Same pattern from u/14 through to 1sts. They do the basics right and hard running at full speed. Score a lot of tries from opponents’ mistakes because of the pressure they create. I counted 33 different calls at the u/16 game against Outeniqua. All of them executed to perfection.

Os du Randt’s son a very promising prospect.

Getting drilled into a pattern from u/14 it just makes it so much easier when reaching 1st team 4/5 years later. And obviously the habit of winning.

That 7 flank a monster, what a player. The rest of the pack also very impressive. Was that Jaco Coetzee at 8? Very promising. Took a few big knocks and looked wobbly at stages but showed so much determination. Great number 8 play from him. 15 also very good.

I would have rather not seen the HTS – Diamntveldt (I guess the hosts had to get their spotlight moment) or KES – Paul Roos games…those were one sided affairs. I don’t think anyone would have predicted the pounding Affies got from Gim, so I can’t criticise the organisers for letting that one go.

@rbw1863: That College backline is quite impressive. Those boys look like they’ve played together since under 8!!! They had the upper hand against a quicker, and slicker Invitational backline. Guma impressed me. Cool as a cucumber…looks lazy running, very deceptive.

What a comeback by EG!Tjo! The Pansies have to be kicking themselves.Full value victory for the man from Gauteng.

@Woltrui: Wollas my personal game of the day was Glenwood/Waterkloof. The paying public was robbed of the best. Very hard and physical game with Thinus again the difference between winning and loosing.
Glenwood do definately have a top 10 team this year. Their outstanding player was the black loosie. I think six. Beast se gat. This boy took, and kept busy, Waterkoof’s defence the whole day. Congrats boet you are a monster.

And again I think the game of the season will be Grey/Waterkloof. They do so good because they play a simple, baseline boring, game with little place for errors. Boring but effective. But I think with Immelman out and Thinus in Waterkloof by 5.

But a warning teams like Paarl Gym, Garsfontein, Oakdale, HTS Middelburg, Monnas, Glenwood, Paul Roos, EG Jansen and Menlopark can and some will beat them.

My hart huil.

@bhkgpa, Gym has also been decimated by the injuries to 4 of their star players, Grant Hermanus, Wayno Visagie (centre and captain), Ruan Stander (first team wing 2013) and Cooper (best school boy kicker I have ever seen). All of these guys are out for at least 3months. You could see that Gym lacked the skill in the backs to implement the game plan and play at pace. Worst Affies team I have ever seen…felt sorry for the youngsters….Woltrui, are they coached properly? Just seems to me that your coaching is sub-standard…Paul Roos very impressive today…good skill level amongst the backs…

    – Great comeback & win for Oakdale vs a good Noord Kaap team.
    – Pitty Waterkloof & Glenwood game was not broadcast – maybe in the place of the Maritzburg & Coke XV game.
    – I feel for the guys of KES that was forced to play with XXXL jerseys – can’t be comfortable. Still a relative easy win for Paul Roos.
    – Good win for Paarl Gim – impressive pack of forwards.
    – Grey Bloem good against injured Outeniqua.

I watched all those games today! Grey PE let themselves down there with some poor defending at the end there, credit to EG Jansen though, they showed great character. Selborne keeps making us East Londeners proud. Man that Morgan Steyn boy!!! To me his the best flyhalf in the Eastern Cape! I think Bosch is overrated. Yhuuu that Willemse boy that played 4 for Paarl Gym. Grey Bloem were also good today. My team of the day however is shared between Paarl Gym and Paul Roos. My player of the day is also shared it was that lil scrumhalf from Paul Roos and the Willemse Boy from Paarl Gym!

College won 56-15. The invitational team was as expected. Some brilliant individuals in particular the wings, 13, fly half who I think played WP craven week last year and the 8th man. Unfortunately the set pieces and general pattern wasn’t there but credit to them for the 2 tries they scored.

College were slick and organized, the defense was an issue but against such fluid runners it was somewhat expected. Backs scrambled well a few times in particular Guma and Coetzee. Thought the College forwards were good especially Goodson, Mazwi and Le Roux. Van der Linde, Seba and Guma were the best of the backs. And Kriel when he came on. Brilliant try at the end reminiscent of his brothers. All in all a performance the coaches can take a lot from. Roll on Diamantveld.
