My opinion MC had a better game than Wynberg and as mentioned earlier Coetzee left his kicking boots behind,He missed 4 kickable penalties in the Wynberg half.
What a fantastic game of school boy rugga,Next time College.

@Roger: You’ve just convinced me to make the trip – in any event, the u16F side needs all the support they can get

Reunion day? Eish – looks like another all out affair – and Grogper points on the table – One thing for sure – BEER will be the winner – oops sorry, I meant SBR will be the winner

Doh – meant colder and sweeter.

College shod have beaten St Andrews easily as the way they started I thought it would be a rout. Credit to St Andrews for coming back – they do play lovely running rugby. College don’t want to be turning down easy penalties in the tougher games though!

@Balikibaba: Disappointing that this is how College came to lose the match, but one thing is sure, I am convinced that despite the mistakes, nothing was left out there, the boys would have given it their all. They will know they let themselves down in some of the execution.

@Roger: So from what you saw, does the 10th of May look like another epic?

I’ve arrived at my holiday destination for my annual break from the north. Skoene uit, gat op die sand. Nou kan ons bietjie rugby gesels. Planned my trip to attend either St John’s festival or Kearsney but decided on Kearsney. What a superb event presented by Team Kearsney!
You guys with kids are very blessed to have this type of event offered to you and your sons!
Haker net so goed.
Westville se staal het gewys teen Grey! Goeie rugby seuns!
Skokkerr vir my was die Affies teen HTS Middelburg game. Nee man! Hoeveel veranderings was voorlngs gewees?

@Roger: The turning point in this game was when College were 4 points ahead. Wynberg kicked the ball ahead and the covering College player fumbled the ball with no pressure whatsoever. Had he just collected the ball (no awkward bounce) College would have won. From an ensuing ruck Wynberg got the turnover and for some odd reason College had no one marking the short side and it was a pretty easy try for Wynberg.

@CHS08: The season is still ahead- lets wait and see. I do not wish to sound arrogant, but unfortunately GCB DOES have a reputation and every opponent that comes up against them , is highly motivated, while its not always possible to reciprocate with the same level of motivation. Thats human. This year, Monnas has not had the best of seasons so far, yet they managed to lift themselves against Grey. That is the sort of attitude and approach that Grey must face match after match, season after season. If they beat GCB, they talk about it for 20 yrs, or longer. Hopefully they can now consolidate, recover from injuries and take on the next hurdle at WK. After that, its interschools, where the approach is very different from festival rugby. Fact is that at the end of the day, that they won two and drew one- better than most.

Hello all. I went to St John’s and must agree with views expressed earlier on this site re the Aussie side (Scots College):
    1. They were comfortably the most exciting team to watch of all the teams that I watched this weekend…and I attended all three Jhb festivals.
    2. They struggled against a very physical team like Jeppe.

That said, I thought that Scots were blown off the park by the ref today. They had about three (or four?) yellow cards v none for Jeppe (which is not the norm!). Indeed, Jeppe scored two tries when Scotts had 13 men on the field and that was ultimately the difference between the two sides.

Unfortunately, I was at the opposite end of the field to where the cards were issued, so can any bloggers help me understand why they were issued? I’m guessing that the first two were for repeated infringements at the ruck? Why was the wing sent off later on?

It may seem like I am pro Scots and anti-Jeppe based on my comments above, but that is absolutely not the case. I was very very happy that Jeppe made sure that the Oz team did not return home with an unbeaten record….but I had a slightly hollow feeling after the game if I am honest. That said, I’m disappointed that Scots did not play a true powerhouse team.

Affies. Maybe a step or two behind the top 8 schools at the moment. Hard work will bring the boitjies on par, no sweat. Nothing to be ashamed of to lose to a strong HTS Middelburg.
Speaking of which. I take it the Middelburg boitjies must be numero uno on the rankings since they won Monnas who drew with the team everybody and sunder said were the number one school on the rankings?

@Balikibaba: Hi Balikibaba. Concerning the Nelspruit and Pretoria Boys High game of Saturday. You mentioned the teams handling and skills were poor. I think you would have seen a much more focused Nellies today. I don’t know if they underestimated PBHS but I do know the coaches identified Paul Roos as their big challenge at the festival. Nellies is one of the smallest schools in the Nu-power competition but they are extremely competitive, as PR can testify after today’s game. To run a top school like PR so close is a compliment to all involved at the Nelspruit Hoerskool’s rugby programme.

1st off thank you to my beloved fellow bloggers for keeping us updated with the scores during this Easter period much appreciated. It was a very dull weekend in East London. @Beet: Thank you very much for a wonderful blog. @BOG: Boggie, not taking anything away from Monument and Westville but I thought Grey College was going to run away with both games maybe perhaps struggle against EG Jansen, so I must say I’m disappointed. Affies was there for the taking so I don’t understand why Selborne lost to them. Dale were good and unlucky to lose to Kearseney apparently the ref was biased but lost to a very good Glenwood side. Speaking of Glenwood I must say judging by their results thus far they looking very good jealous down. Wynberg are impressing me aswell.

@Balikibaba: College were a bit dumb on Sat too. Three times they had kickable penalties and elected to go for the line out and St Andrews kept them out. Not sure if they were under instructions or what. They scored their first try from a driving maul but thereafter St Andrews defended it very well. St Andrews kicker also had a conversion charged down from right in front – bet he will never let that happen again!

@rbw1863: that would be great but it would have to be a 1st team festival between the two provinces because the distance between the two is just too much to take the entire schools to the Cape or Natal. It would have to be a sort of Cape Schools like festival.

@Grasshopper: Agree with you about the coaches behavior on the side of the field. If I’m not mistaken when Boksmart audit a school there are boxes painted behind the try line on either side of the field for the coaches. Or maybe even all the games? If you have faith in your team and your coaching surely you can let them have at it on the park.

    My 2 cents:

St Andrews vs Hilton: Hilton started the better side and scored a beautiful try. However the longer the game went on the more St Andrews started to dominate letting the ball do the work. They played some beautiful rugby. Hilton have some good players, but they lacked the finishing touches.

Wynberg vs Maritzburg College: What an EPIC game! Wynberg are big and very physical. After about 10 minutes I thought College were going to be in for a long day, but I learned that these College boys don’t lie down. They absorbed everything Wynberg could throw at them and then actually started to look the better side. Ultimately the difference between the 2 sides was that the College kicker missed 5 kicks, one of which was a sitter in front of the poles. Also, with college ahead by 4 points they made 2 comical errors in a row which resulted in Wynberg scoring. College will be kicking themselves, but Wynberg were also full credit for their victory.

Both Wynberg and College have good sides. Looking forward to seeing how Bishops go against Wynberg this year, but I must say it is good to see another Southern Suburbs team being a force, even though I was cheering for College! :)

@Roger: That is true. Admittedly College played 55 out of 60 minutes against St Andrews with open side flanker Stuart at hooker after Mazwi took a knock and Swanepoel broke his hand. It was a baptism of fire and the College line out and scrum obviously weren’t running full tilt but full credit to him for shouldering that responsibility, he gave a commendable performance. But with Mazwi I think College would have put a more convincing result on the scoreboard.

Congrats to KES on their result today after an unfortunate loss on Saturday! Northwood have proven tricky customers to all this this year and as Grasshopper says I’m sure they will continue to do so.

The St Andrews – Hikton score was also wrong on the scoreboard, it was in fact 37 – 18 to St Andrews. The electronic scoreboard at Saints showed the correct scores, but they were then wrongly showed on the other scoreboard.

The Linden – Windhoek score was 40 – 13 to Linden. For some reason the scoreboard incorrectly reflected it as 40 – 15. The score above shows a win for Windhoek, that is totally wrong.

@GreenBlooded: Think this happens everywhere – just that some are more blatant than others . One option would be to take away the earpieces of the medics but then what happens when a real injury occurs ? Might be an idea to move the Technical area away from the field of play and into the stands but I am sure they would find a way around that as well . Interesting comment about Grey – I sat one row behind the area today and I can assure you all the plays were being called by the coaches so they are just a bit more discreet .

With a very dominant pack and securing all of our own lineouts and scrums as well as a couple of poached balls we still cannot finish off. I think the Westville outside backs should buy the cokes tonight as seldom have I see such a poor display of tackling . Better to put a #10 jersey on a post box , shift Lindor to 13 , play two flankers on the wings and then hopefully we might stop the opposition beating us out wide . Don’t know weather it is a lack of pace or !@LLs that is responsible but it was exactly the same against Grey

College vs Wynberg was an epic encounter. The physicality was frightening. That was a vintage College display; they threw the kitchen sink at Wynberg and Wynberg did well to absorb and score with the few chances they had. Le Roux, Goodsen and Mazwi were immense again and Marcell Coetzee was a tiger on attack and a real thorn in the side on the opposition but unfortunately, he left his kicking boots in the changeroom. He missed about 5 kicks which were the difference on the day. Wynberg were big and their pack being particularly bulky and physical but college climbed in and hit hard and the pace of the game was exhausting. Fantastic match, I take my hat off to both teams. School boy rugby at its best.

@Grasshopper: Your comment on the Glenwood coaches highlights a concern I have had for some time about this practice. The “Technical Zones” that were introduced to keep the coaches and reserves from roaming up and down the touchlines shouting the odds has simply been circumvented. What happens now is that a ‘roving medic’ takes over the roll – simply someone who carries an ice pack to look the part but his function is to coach the team and try to influence the match officials. The former issue is fine – but shouldn’t be necessary if the team is well coached (think Grey College) but the latter is downright nonsense. The GW coaches are by no means the only guilty parties here though.

To my mind, the touchline should belong exclusively to the AR. The medics are there to attend to injured players and can get there quickly enough from their station on the halfway line. If they need to be there then it needs to be on the basis that he is there for medical reasons only – the first time he talks to a player or match official he gets ejected.

@Playa23 @Tjoppa: There has been many a bad year for a good school. One year’s results does not make a good school weak. Anyone familiar with the terms “regression/progression to the mean” will know that a bad year or two every “sometime” must happen … to neutralise every “exceptional” year – in order to maintain the average.
It is therefore a rush conclusion to say that the other schools caught up. Yes, their teams in a specific year may have caught up, but it must be maintained for at least three years to make such conclusion.

@Grasshopper: KES were full value for money today in front of a packed crowd. Northwood came back well in the 2nd half with some great tries, but KES backline ran well. A number of 1st choice players out for NW also didn’t help.

@CapeMan: College are a good side, just finding their mojo it seems, they will be very tough to beat at home in the KZN season. I am very happy with the unbeaten start, but don’t want to rant and rave, the big fish are coming later, next week its Waterkloof & Outeniqua and then Monnas, Affies and Grey Bloem later in the year. Inbetween that we have the KZN season where every side will want the Glenwood scalp…..doesn’t get any easier does it! No wonder the coaches look to bring in depth.

@Grasshopper: Wynberg could spring a surprise or 2 on the wineland schools this year I think. Powerful 8th man behind a big pack and some lethal backs from what I saw from them on Thursday and Saturday.

College looked well coached in the games I saw. Just lacking a clinical final pass and game breaking defense but it will come.
No luck boys, heads up and good luck for wildeklawer wish I could be there.

This years Wynberg side is really really good and for Maritzburg to come ever so close in beating them means Maritzburg is also a great side. This game must have been the game of the festival. @Grassy when I was at the Grey Festival it was one particular Glenwood parent that was walking up and down the sideline trying to be another ref. The other Glenwood parents were great spectators. They all spoke afrikaans . For a school that is undefeated this year, you sound dissatisfied Grassy.

Really hard luck to College, leading most of the game to lose by a point in the last minute….heart breaking! Good Wynberg side though, watched them a week ago. Did anyone notice a trend with Glenwood, they scored 31 points in each of their KERF 3 games…

When I said that I hope that GCB can just get through KERF without too much damage, I did not have in mind it being THAT close.Even in bad years, Monnas always seem to lift their game against Grey, having the best record of all schools against them. Hopefully, the wounded can now recover for WK in time. But, I suppose a draw is better than a loss , so well done to both teams for getting through their tough programs.

Northwood obviously didn’t arrive mentally, one Grogper point gone. I think we only one ahead now. How can DHS almost beat KES and Northwood get caned? Home vs away maybe….KES are not exactly blowing away sides this year….

Yes, I agree. Jeppe weren’t great, but they took their chances. Scots never kicked for territory or for touch during the game, which is high risk.

They look good against schools like St Johns, but would battle against any of the better schools.

EG Jansen would have learned some valuable lessons after their losses against Grey College and Glenwood. Two tough matches against two strong teams. Hope they will put it to use against Kearsney today in the main game. Also Affies should pick up the pace against HTS Middelburg otherwise it is going to be a long season
