Blog from a spectator at the Paarl Gym u16 Tournament on Day 1 & 2
DAY 1
Paarl XV 37 Bellville 7
The problem for a school with limited quality players like Bellville is that they have to give their reserves adequate game time. All their subs started yesterday against Paarl XV. What Bellville probably didn’t realize is that the Paarl team is made up of players from Hugenote (Wellington), Stellenbosch High, Laborie, New Orleans and Klein Nederburgh. None of them are big rugby schools but if you can pick your 4 or 5 best players from each school, you’ll be able to put together a good side like the Paarl XV is. The result says it all.
Garsfontein 3 Oakdale 14
Michaelhouse 25 Brackenfell 21.
The lead changed quite a few times during the match. I have only seen the last bit and the rugby was quite entertaining;
Diamantveld 12 Centurion 7
A very controversial end to the match.
Centurion was leading and in the final play Diamantveld launched an attack.
The assistant referee (all of them were appointed by the WP referees’
association) put up his flag more or less on the 10 meter mark (game was played on the B-veld) and we could see it from the pavilion). Diamantveld scored and when the coaches of Centurion alerted the referee to the flag he said that the try has been awarded and he could not change that..a lot of BS IMO. I sat next to the Centurion guys at lunch and they were gutted. They said that the boys needed the win because they have struggled ever since under 14. Apparently there was a meeting with all parties concerned. The ref apologized to everybody (apparently still inexperienced) and the matter was settled amicably. I am not sure if the score was changed.
EG Jansen 54 Marlow 10
A mismatch. The boys from EG are huge !!! They annihilated Marlow
Menlopark 15 Tygerberg 8
Tygerberg put up quite a good fight and couldn’t finish quite a few moves.
Affies 26 Paarl Boys’ 13
Boishaai was in the lead 10 – 0 after about 10 or
15 minutes. Affies totally dominated the lineouts. Boishaai has moved Khanya Ncusane (no 8 usually) to lock where he was quite ineffective. He is athletic enough to jump at 4 and Moerat is too heavy (without much “self elevation”) to lift / keep in the air). Moerat made some huge hits though. I guess they don’t have any other quality locks.
Boland Landbou 53 Potch Gym 21
Landbou took the foot of the gas in the 2nd half and made many subs which disrupted them. They were leading something like 38 – 7 at half time. They played the most attractive rugby of the day IMO. Many backline tries were scored. The no 9 (Deon Carstens) played at flyhalf. I’d like to see him at 9. He has a huge pass and is a natural footballer
Monnas 10 Outeniqua 7
There was plenty of needle in this match. After 14 minutes the Monnas no 4 lock received a red card and they played very well to win the game. Huge forwards of Monnas.
Paul Roos 31 Kemptonpark 9
I was a bit disappointed with Kempton’s performance though. Paul Roos played quite attractive rugby at times.
Waterkloof 6 Framesby 3
The tempers flared quite a few times. Framesby has a huge pack!!! Waterkloof secured the win with a last min penalty. One of their players (Klofies) left the field on a stretcher and another was injured.
Grey 33 Paarl Gym 10
Gym’s lineouts were poor and their scrums as well.
Grey’s first try was scored after a heel against the head.
DAY 2
Menlopark 7 Oakdale 21
I could not watch this match because I was busy watching the match being played on the B-field.
Centurion 0 Tygerberg 53
This was a mismatch and Tygerberg dominated the match with lots of possession, even though the hooker missed his jumpers on numerous occasions.
EG Jansen 13 Grey 33
This was quite a tight affair initially but Grey’s superior fitness counted at the end. The scrums were fairly evenly contested.
Garsfontein 46 Potch Gym 7
Another mismatch as was the Boland / Marlow match. It seems that Marlow’s team will have a difficult season. I feel that the draw should only be done for the first day’s matches to ensure strength v strength matches. Of the first 10 matches played today, 6 had a points differential of at least 20 of which 4 were more than 30 points’ difference.
Boland Landbou 40 Marlow 7
The Boland backline kept on with their impressive running. Deon Carstens the no 9 should at least be in the GK squad this year if he stays fit. He has a great pass, a good kicking foot and great anticipation.
Outeniqua 23 Waterkloof 27
Initially it seemed as if Klofies would take this match easily and they were up 24 – 6 at the break. Late in the 2nd half Outeniqua scored 2 converted tries and it was a tense finish. At the end of the match there was a bit of a fight. One substitute ran in from the side jumped over a group of players and hit an opponent. Those of us that saw it happening was quite upset. Afterwards the head of WP referees spoke to the coach of Outeniqua about the boy’s behavior which was really unacceptable (the bad behavior that is). IMO they should send him home! There is no place in rugby for this type of behavior.
Paarl Gym 63 Michaelhouse 5
Another mismatch. Gym played much more fluent rugby. Their lineouts were much better with a different hooker playing. There scrums seemed to be more solid too. Having said that, Michaelhouse did not have the team to compete against Gym. Michaelhouse tried to play some rugby but was not allowed by the hosts. The talented (no 8) Bernard Swart of Gym left the field with an ankle injury. Let’s hope it’s not too serious.
Bellville 15 Framesby 27
Bellville played well against the huge pack of Framesby. The smaller front row of Bellville actually dominated the scrums and won about 4 balls against the heel. It seems that their technique is very good. Their first try was scored of such a scrum ball (heel against the head) by the flyhalf. The score does not reflect how close the game was.
Affies 26 Paarl XV 5
Affies had too much fire power for the invitational side.
Brackenfell 14 Kempton Park 18
This was (as the score suggests) a fairly closely contested match. At the end of the game Brackenfell tried to set up the win with a penalty kick (and lineout) to the corner but Kempton kept them out.
Unfortunately I did not watch the last 2 matches: Boishaai v Diamantveld and Paul Roos vs Monument
Day 3
A few brief comments about day 3 in Paarl. The games were played on 4 different fields and therefore it is difficult to comment on many of the games.
Grey 75 (72 ?) Kempton Park 0
The official score was given as 75 but one of the boys told me it was 72: no real difference. This was the highest score of the day and as I have said before the format should be changed to get strength v strength. It is also true that Grey did not have any real challengers for the top team of the tournament. Apart from Grey the other unbeaten teams were Affies, Monnas, Oakdale and Boland Landbou – 5 in total.
Monument 12 Diamantveld 9
I could not watch this but the score was given to me by the officials. It is a quite surprising result seeing that Diamantveld was fairly lucky to beat Centurion as described earlier. I guess the fact that Monnas played with 14 men against Outeniqua for about 46 minutes as well as a hard fought victory over Paul Roos on Monday caused them to be quite tired today. The game started in the rain and rainy conditions usually favour the underdogs.
Bellville vs Marlow 14 – 10
The game started in the rain and handling was initially very difficult. Bellville was leading 14 – 0 after 33 minutes. It seemed that the introduction of the substitutes upset their rhythm as well. Marlow fought back with 2 late second half tries which saw a very tense finish to the game. The Bellville flyhalf pulled off a match saving tackle just before the end of the match.
Brackenfell 35 Centurion 17
According to the Brackenfell’s coach his side stopped playing after having quite a substantial lead. They nevertheless secured a comfortable victory.
Affies 50 Tygerberg 3
Affies simply had too much power. Their lineouts functioned well while Tygerberg once again missed quite a few of their own feeds to the lineouts. This is a very well drilled Affies side with a hard working pack of forwards.
Paarl Gym 34 EG Jansen 24
This match was played on the B-field and this spectator could not watch much of the match
Menlopark 24 Paarl XV 7
It was played on an outside field and I can’t comment
Boland Landbou 16 Waterkloof 9
Boland started off well but almost blew their chances. Waterkloof almost levelled the score at the end but just couldn’t convert their opportunities. Waterkloof was the better side in the scrums and got a few heels against the head. Boland’s tight head prop Stefan (Os) Alberts scored a try after a powerful run following a free kick. He went across the line with quite a few defenders hanging onto him. The 9 and 10 of Boland played well. Their hard working flank Athi Magwala sustained a wrist injury in virtually the last tackle of the game.
Outeniqua 19 Garsfontein 5
This was a game that saw a lot of running rugby. Once again it is difficult to comment seeing that it was played on the B-field.
Oakdale 29 (Officials) 34 (Bloggers’ score) Potch Gym 10
It was played on an outside field and I can’t comment
Paul Roos 48 Framesby 18
Paul Roos started with a number of their substitute players. They were leading 22 – 0 at halftime. With 20 minutes to go it was 22 – 8 but a few quick tries by Paul Roos secured the game for the Stellenbosch boys. Some of the regular starters (Tiaan Coetzee at 9, the 2 centres Lyle Hendricks and Jouberto Greef) entered the fray at the time and added some momentum. Once Framesby’s big hooker and massive tighthead were substituted, the Paul Roos had a better time in the scrums. Their flank Ben Dixon played at lock and was quite prominent in the lineouts and kick off receipts. Benje Momberg showed some of his pace when given the opportunity on the wing. The fullback Damian Willemse also had a good game. Framesby managed another try and penalty late in the game.
Boishaai 55 Michaelhouse 0
One of the most interesting positional changes saw Khanya Ncusane playing at outside centre. Khanya is a no 8 but played lock on Saturday. I’m not sure if this move was necessitated by an injury to a centre…..quite possibly. He did not look quite at ease in this unfamiliar position. He did however score a lovely individual try out of broken play when he rounded quite a few players to score in the corner.
@Vleis: I know that there where 2 boys that joined the school last year but they played U16 A’s in 2013 and are in the 3rd side this year. I may be wrong and will find out but the current U16 side has remained pretty much unchanged since U14 as far as I know.

@JeppeRugbyFan: Thanks for the update.
I was told by a Jeppe dad that two boys from the Vaal joined at the beginning of this year (or maybe late last year), but maybe I misunderstood him.
@Vleis, they did play Kearsney on the main Jeppe field and your assumption is 100% correct however there are no new players in the side as far as I know. They have promoted 2 players from the B side to the starting line-up though.
As for their loss against Helpmekaar today, Helpmekaar deserved to win the game. Helpmekaar’s defence was brilliant and Jeppe could not capitalise on their opportunities.
@CRC: Good for Jeppe, but not so pleasant for St Alban’s when they play them!!
Jeppe u16 team has a lightning quick backline, which can destroy teams. I suspect that they played Kearsney on their 1st team field, which enabled them to use their large, quick backs to good effect. The score was nevertheless surprising…but Kearsney are obviously a gutsy bunch, as they won their next two games.
@Vleis: Good for Jeppe, that is a great result and good to see them really challenging, that Kearsney side are not bad.
@Ballie: Jeppe is the oldest school in Jhb with a rich history, so it has a lot going for it. That said, the sport declined for many years until perhaps the nadir was reached when they shipped over 60 v KES a while back. So, they’ve put in a huge amount of work to improve their sport recently – especially rugby and cricket. In order to achieve this they’ve brought in talent from far and wide and employed in good coaches. Now, they have got to the point where 1,000 boys applied for the 200 grade 8 spots in 2014.
As far as I’m aware, the current u16 team found six players who played at the u13 provincial week the year before they joined Jeppe as u14’s. Only one of those boys left at the end of grade 8. In fact, in grade 10 they brought in two new (provincial I think) players.
@Deon Pitzer: Ongelukkig is hulle ook daar. Gelukkig is ek nou buite bereik vd klomp gemors.
Super stuff, some comments on Day 3’s games have been added
@BOG: Jaaaa BOG, ek is oortuig dat Kaapstad alleen CNN en Lonely Planet be-invloed in hul keuses. Miskien besit Wolf Blitzer aandele in Pam Golding?
@Vleis: Surprising Jeppe have managed to hold onto the talent in that U16 team.
Given the Jeppe track record you mention, I suspect Kearsney may not have had the right mindset for the challenge. Kearsney are a useful side, probably within the top 3 in Kzn and enjoyed a high intake of Kzn U13 reps.
In my laaste kwartaal, nie eers heeltemal somer nie, moes ek 11 en-n -half jaar se skoolwerk inhaal en toe moes ek met n nat handdoek oor my skouers sit. Pam G werk lekker saam.
@Vleis: Add Selborne bt Grey High 16-10
@CRC: A few u16 scores that I’ve seen are as follows:
Affies beat Tygerberg 50-3; Jeppe beat Kearsney 66-5; Nelspruit beat Pretoria Boys High 15-0; Kearsney beat KES 17-13; Helpmekaar beat Jeppe 17-10; Oakdale beat Menlo Park 21-7; Kearsney beat Parktown 27-7; KES beat Lions XV 28-23; Jeppe beat Nelspruit 35-16; Helpmekaar beat Pretoria Boys High 35-5; Grey College beat EG Jansen 33-13; Eldoraigne beat St John’s 38-14; Paarl Gym beat Michaelhouse 63-5; Monument beat Paul Roos 11-8; Glenwood beat HTS Witbank 7-5; DHS beat Montana 15-10; Linden beat Clifton 22-0; Monnas beat Diamantveld 12-9; Helpmekaar beat KES 28-12; Florida beat Pretoria Boys High 24-21; St Benedict’s beat Parktown 24-12; Affies beat Paarl Boys 26–13 ; Monnas beat Outeniqua 10–7; Grey College beat Paarl Gym 33-10; HTS Drostdy beat St John’s 41–0.
@Ballie: Yep, this is definitely the best Jeppe age group team in many, many years. Despite the fact that they have played many strong opponents over the past two and a half years, they have only ever lost to Affies…until today that is. They lost to Helpmekaar, which is a big surprise. Make no mistake, the Helpies u16 team is strong, but I would’ve expected Jeppe to beat them fairly easily. I wonder if there were any cards?
Maw, amper elke dag poskaartdae.
@Deon Pitzer: Dankie vir jou inligtingsessie oor Bloem.
HJS 0/16 55 -0 Michaelhouse
HJS 0/15 62 – 3 Waterkloof
Oakdale 34-10 vs Potch Gym.
Well Done Bulle! 3 Goeie wenne
@CRC: Kearsney U16 were beaten 5 – 66 by Jeppe on Sat. Must be an extraordinary group of players as I dont see other Jeppe age groups posting that sort of result. Saw some pictures taken during the game and some of the Jeppe boys look well conditioned.
@BOG: BOG. Lyk my die weer hieronder het so bietjie vasgesteek in jou kop.
Does anybody know the results from any other U 16 tournaments around the country? I know Kearsney are at a tournament at Jeppe.
@BOG: GCB onder 16A 72- Kemptonpark 0. In die reen.
@kierie: Ja ou Kierie, dit was my amper beskore, daai Outeniqua uitsig. Wys jou net mens moenie stupid goed doen sodat jou kleinkinders in plekke soos Vrede, Stutterheim of Bloem eindig nie. Ek dink selfs Beirut is beter as bogenoemde 3 plekke.
Net so goed jy bemaak jou lewer aan iemand.
@BOG: As jy jou geskiedenis ken sou jy weet destyds het menigte boere vanaf die Suidkaap Vrystaat toe getrek met die hoop om groot geld as boere daar te maak. My oupagrootjie was een van hulle.
@Pinotage: Ergste is al my voorvaders kom van Georg se wereld. Daar waar Oubaai nou is was eers ons familieplaas. Ek wonder of dit is waar ek my streep weg het?
@Pinotage: Die aggressievlakke is hoog daar. 2 ouens so entjie agter my slaan die rook uitmekaar.
Dit verg seker baie selfbeheersing van n ouer as iemand jou kind so beledig.
@Speartackle: Geen grap, sorry dude.
@Speartackle: Boishaai vs Monnas
@BuiteBreek: Teen wie was dit? Lyk my ek moet dadelik na daai Laerskool Glenwood toernooi toe jaag of nog beter……Kaap toe kom met n Hi Ace.
@Speartackle: Ek trap nie of skop ‘n man wat reeds lê nie 41-0
Updated with Day 2 feedback
Monnas 11 – 3 Paarl Roos
@Pinotage: Thanks
@BOG: GCB under 16A 33- EG Jansen 13
Thank you for a short and effective feedback. Would like to have another one for day 2 if possible.
Okay, got confirmation that Oakdale u/16 won against Garsfontein,14-3 and today they won against Menlopark, 21-7. Well Done, Bulle!!!!
@BOG: And what about the report on the second game???
By the way, Beet, The Paarl Gim webpage gives this result as 14-3 to Oakdale. Which one is correct??
The last match report- is that what is called “short and sweet” ? Was this report from Paarlbok, by any chance?
