@ Muzi – I must agree with you on Marais…I would love to see what he does behind a pack that is batteling to dominate…he comes across as extremely windgat to me and we all know its easy for a 10 to play and dictate when you going forward…he is nothing more than a jaco van der westhuizen with the advantage of playing behind a pack that always dominates…
The Lions was top of the Super 15 log for almost 2 hours
Well done Lions- a good start to the season and just the boost needed to go forward. Never easy to start the season with a loss..
The Sharks I suspect will only get better they kept there cool and came out on top so things look good for them.
The Lions well great win but I still suspect a bottom of the overall log for them they just came up against a very poor team on Saturday.
The Cheethers now sit at the cross roads if they lose on Saturday against the Bulls and then face there away trip I am afraid there season could be over before it started.
I think the Bulls have a few issues one been they play 3 locks and 2 No 8’s which did actual help there power game allowed them to out muscle the Sharks at stages although this made them very slow, only issue is if they try and use a more mobile pack they will get slaughtered so I don’t think Ludicke knows which way to go I suspect he will stick with the power game but this will not bring him enough wins to be there at the end.
As for the backline well to put it bluntly if people like Serfontein and JJ don’t find a more free flowing team to play for they will be nothing very soon Serfontein is already looking like a one dimensional Bulls centre who will go know were he was really pathetic.
@BOG: I think the sending off of Cook was correct. If he was attempting a tackle it was without any arms. If he was attempting a charge down he chose the wrong line, by a large margin.
Don’t blame CJ. Blame your kickers. They cost you the game.
@pongola: I think it was ruled a deliberate knock into touch which I think is the correct ruling.
why did the bull players twice get penalised for knocking the ball back.the last penalty of the game ?
@Woltrui:Just because he’s an ex-affies lad doesn’t mean Danie is good enough for Super Rugby sorry he’s decent at provincial level but that’s just about it…Lohan looked good in the CC in fact he had a better kicking game than quota Rudi Paige.I don’t like what I saw from Carlo Engelbrecht for Tukkies…unimpressed….Rudi is not bad at all.
@beet: If Kobus Maraus is so special I would like to know from that talent scout and Ludz why they had to sign JLP instead of adding Marais as third choice flyhalf in the Super Rugby Group?!?!….even Tiaan Schoeman is ahead of him at this stage….
FFS Cheetahs !! Im in favour of the idea that players should only be paid if they win a match. Then we will see commitment. But, having said that, I see here a few predictions for the Bok team. Kiss our rugby goodbye if even the best out of yesterdays players are selected. Unlike most FHs around, Goosen puts his body on the line and therefore more prone to injury. Blown off the field? Sending Cook off, is “blown off the field”- literally ! Im not sure if they have something in KZN, which can stop you in midair, but its not yet available elsewhere and CJ must be told. And sadly, that yellow had a major impact on the result. But honestly, they should never have been in that position. Naka should rather raid an OAH during the coming week.
@pongola: If a player knocks the ball backwards, there is no infringement and its pretty much play on until the ref decides its advantage over or not enough advantage has been gained and he blows the whistle. The reason for the deliberate knock-on is to stop play so that the ref has to award whatever advantage he called when the ball was still alive. All thats changed is no quick taps allowed from a penalty or free kick awarded after a deliberate knock-on
@Muzi: I watched Kobus Marais in Durban vs the Sharks u19. He had a good game. Ludz also said he liked what he saw of Kobus in East London vs Border. I heard from another eye for talent source that you know that Kobus was amongst the players that impressed last season.
Anyway I’m not saying he is better than Pollard. What I’m saying is the Bulls should look at having different options off the bench. Pollard came on but he is being groomed to play just like Fouche plays, so its all fine when the Bulls are in control but when they are chancing a game in which their forwards are competitive but having little influence on the scoreline perhaps a lively flyhalf who could add a bit of zip to the line gives a dimension other than the death sentence the centres get from having Fouche on their inside.
can someone please help me to understand the deliberate knockdown rule. if the player knocking the ball down knocks it backwards what happens?
@Muzi: Musi what happened to Danie Faasen, the Affies scrumhalf who was contracted to the Bulls. If the Bulls want to play the kicking game their is no better 9 than Danie. Can put a ball on a ticky, time after time.
@Muzi: Sorry Muz, I disagree with you and Beet on Bongi. He was the one Bulls forward that stood out during the CC in all aspects of the game. Any way he is more consistant with putting the ball into the lineouts than Visagie.@beet: Beet I understand why the Bulls played the up and under game yesterday. Slippery conditions etc. The Bulls won many a trophy with a 10 man game. In my opinion we made a couple of stupid mistakes that cost us the game. After yesterdays game I believe we got a tight five which can stood up and dominate any team in the competition.
Goosen needs to grow a pair of balls…..man up this is not schoolboy rugby for goodness sake….that’s what happens when you grow up by eating cornflakes….the lad is brittle….
Cheetahs Springbok front row was on turbo reverse….Coenie is a loose head prop…..Trevor looks like a beached whale.
Willie Le Roux had his usual brilliant moments but overall he was s**t.

Kobus Marais couldn’t even set the backline alight in the Under 19 final in fact he was atrocious at newlands….yet you tell me he offers more than Pollard….

@Woltrui: I don’t know Wollie. The Bulls forwards did well but to win games the Bulls have to crack their opponents defensive codes when it matters. It looked like the rolling maul is all the Bulls had going for themselves as far penetration is concerned. Maybe this coming week they will invite their backs to practices. The Bulls backs did not look nearly as sharp as the Sharks.
On the bench they should really try for players that can change the pattern of play. They seem to have the power game – so speed might be what should come off the bench. A Marnus Schoeman (unused by Cheetahs) type flank, a Warrick Gelant type fullback. Mbonambi is not exactly a livewire for a small hooker. Pollard not offering much different from Fouche. I always wondered why the Bulls did not make better use of Burger Odendaal as a junior. There’s a guy who can set a backline in motion, even Kobus Marais, altho a bit young offers something more exciting at 10. At 13 Beyers not as quick as JJ but his skill set is better and he reads the game better.
Anyway early days but it looks like the Bulls will rely on the trusted old formula to win their games with 10 players doing most of the work.
Corncerning the Bulls: One change I would make. Bongi in place of Visagie. The three line outs we lost yesterday, one 5 meters from the Charkes try line was crucial.
Cheetahs and Lions: Lions deserved the win. Their young and inexperienced pack were way better than the Cheetahs. Graig Joubert had a very bad afternoon. Mr Joubert sometimes seems to run on a field with a pre conceived idea that a certain team is the better therefore all the “grey calls” must go to that team (world cup final as example). He blowed the Lions of the park in the first half yesterday and some of his calls were astoundingly inconsistent. Lions should have won the game with a lot more ease. Hats of to Mr Ackerman and his coaching staff.
Sharkes and Bulls: The scoreline doesn’t reflect what happened on the field. The Bulls IMHO played a lot better than the score reflected. Some individual brilliance, rookie mistake on defence, and a freakish mistake led to 3 tries. I take a lot of hart out of the Bulls performance. That said I think the Charkies could have under estimated the Bulls. I don’t think Mr White would allow their forwards to be shoved around, as they were last night, again this season. For moi J Du Plessis were the best forward by a long shot with the Bulls 2 Locks close behind him. Lambie and Francois Steyn the best backline players. I suspect Lambie will be the Sprinboks no 10 at the end of the Super rugby season.
