Port Natal Night Series 2014

Northwood may not be returning to defend their title but the well organised and popular Port Natal Night Series looks like it will be bigger and better than ever before. DHS steps in to fill the gap left by Northwood and for the first time Glenwood will have two invitation teams (A&B) participating at the event. Hosts Port Natal and 2012 Champions George Campbell are the other top contenders for the A-team title. Pinetown and the Durban Development team complete the A-team competition lineup of 6 schools.

There is little doubt that this year’s competition will be well attended and seating on the atmosphere filled Friday nights might even prove a little hard to come by. However the good vibe and tasty food on offer will continue to keep those supporters who are not completely absorbed by the action on the field happy.

I am pleased to say I know Sparks didn’t score the last try. I however did not know the name of the player that did, so I’m going to give you a very respectable 3/10 for effort

@Tigger: The last try was scored by Sam not Sparks – and he did a pretty awesome handstand.

The photos are unfortunately not great due to motion blur. Im still figuring out how to get the camera settings right with the Port Natal spot lights.

Good effort by Port Natal. They did their homework and looked at one stage if they were going to win it. The score was 7-6 with just 3 or so minutes left to play.

    Tonight Glenwood had
    Kenny van Niekerk
    Percy Mngadi
    Ntokozo Vidima
    Kevin du Randt
    James Venter
    McMillan Muller
    Kwazi Khanyile
    Curtis Jonas
    Ruben Fouche
    Sparks Ngcobo
on the park for at least 25 or more minutes each.

Tredoux, Joubert, Coetzee have not featured at all in this series. It will be interesting to see who else they have. I don’t think Beneke has played either.

Glenwood Inv XV 15 Port Natal 1st 6. Port Natal put up a spirited performance tonight. An early penalty by Porties put them 3-0 ahead and the score stayed the same well in to the second half. The Glenwood team had all the possession and dominated the scrums but could not convert it into points. Handling errors and penalties at critical times frustrated a lot of good work. Eventually Glenwood took a quick tap and forced their way over Porties line near the poles. The conversion made it 7-3. Porties then lost no time in replying with a penalty to make the score 7-6. Glenwood then replied with a penalty of their own to take the score to 10-6. Shortly after this Glenwood’s line in the person of “Sparks” slipped past Porties up the right hand line and enabled a team mate to score in the corner to make the final score 15-6. Full marks to Porties for their “never give” up attitude. No quarter was asked in this game and none given. The game was played in a wonderful spirit and the teams clapped each other off at the end. All in all a great game.

No offence to Westville at all, but you just have to look at the players of GW – Tredoux, Coetzee, Jonas, Spam, Vidima,Joubert – all Craven Week players with an extra years experience.

In fact, I will be surprised if any KZN team can match GW this year – think it is their year, only one who I feel can maybe surprise you, is M College.

Many of Glenwood’s potential 1st and 2nd team players are top athletes and swimmers. They work around the different training schedules and most participate in swimming, cricket, water polo or basketball in the 1st term.
I seem to recall that the big athletics events happen in the 2nd half of the year.

Hopper – read as ” whilst rugby season in progress”

Remember the rugby season is from Jan to late August

take Corne Vermaak he was lightning fast and would have been a great full time athlete …

I should imagine this would apply to 1 & 2nd team IMO

take any top rugby school & i’m sure the players would be happy to stick to Rugby only – at the end of the day it would be their choice though – no guns to heads here

I was a good athlete at school – at the Sa champs if there were 200 spectators at the champs that was a lot – mostly family and friends –

Play 1st team at a top rugby school up to 10,000 spectators – no contest!

@beet: Hi Beet, Any update regarding the Union’s games on the stadium. It was well attended last year and the boys really enjoyed it. Dates would be great as the boys are away in Vryheid at the beginning of March and at Grey at the end of March, early April.

@Greenwood: Rubbish, they can’t play another winter sport, summer sports are open and most play waterpolo to keep up fitness and ball skills. Most do athletics in term 3 after rugby too….

@Greenwood: really – bit dictatorial isn’t it – forcing talented sportsman to choose so early?

From what I hear from my Son at Glenwood – if you play rugby at top level
@ Gwd you cannot partake in other sports –

Don’t you get resistance from the athletics coaches when your rugby start this early ?
Or don’t you select the athletes for these early tournaments ?

This tournie will be a good opportunity for DHS to get to the right sort of fitness level ahead of the season proper. Conditioning has looked like an issue for DHS teams in recent seasons, so it will be interesting to see how they go with 6 short games behind them as opposed to a game vs KZN Dev or a N.Natal team to start the season.

@Grasshopper: Both Northwood and George Campbell felt that they were playing too much rugga in a season. Northwood have withdrawn from the PNNS and Campbell opted out of the Bizsport.

Why did Northwood withdraw? Looks a good opportunity for teams to try combinations and gel before the full season kicks in.
