Northwood may not be returning to defend their title but the well organised and popular Port Natal Night Series looks like it will be bigger and better than ever before. DHS steps in to fill the gap left by Northwood and for the first time Glenwood will have two invitation teams (A&B) participating at the event. Hosts Port Natal and 2012 Champions George Campbell are the other top contenders for the A-team title. Pinetown and the Durban Development team complete the A-team competition lineup of 6 schools.
There is little doubt that this year’s competition will be well attended and seating on the atmosphere filled Friday nights might even prove a little hard to come by. However the good vibe and tasty food on offer will continue to keep those supporters who are not completely absorbed by the action on the field happy.

Porties prepare to take on Pinetown
@beet: good game and well done to glenwood! Cricket score???
Good to see a much better performance by George Campbell in Round 4. They lost 3-14 to the Glenwood Inv.
Damn only a 3/10 That is why I stick to photos
@CyndiAtRugby: I hope you don’t mind. I changed the reply on your last comment to Tigger.
I am pleased to say I know Sparks didn’t score the last try. I however did not know the name of the player that did, so I’m going to give you a very respectable 3/10 for effort
@Tigger: The last try was scored by Sam not Sparks – and he did a pretty awesome handstand.
The photos are unfortunately not great due to motion blur. Im still figuring out how to get the camera settings right with the Port Natal spot lights.
@Gungets Tuft: You can get the ape out of the bush BUT never the bush out the Ape.
@BOG: Siyabonga Tom – Sunset clause please.
As for the reference to race – would you have asked about the wife and kids if his name was Windpomp Janse van Rensburg?
Good effort by Port Natal. They did their homework and looked at one stage if they were going to win it. The score was 7-6 with just 3 or so minutes left to play.
Tonight Glenwood had
Kenny van Niekerk
Percy Mngadi
Ntokozo Vidima
Kevin du Randt
James Venter
McMillan Muller
Kwazi Khanyile
Curtis Jonas
Ruben Fouche
Sparks Ngcobo
on the park for at least 25 or more minutes each.
Tredoux, Joubert, Coetzee have not featured at all in this series. It will be interesting to see who else they have. I don’t think Beneke has played either.
Glenwood Inv XV 15 Port Natal 1st 6. Port Natal put up a spirited performance tonight. An early penalty by Porties put them 3-0 ahead and the score stayed the same well in to the second half. The Glenwood team had all the possession and dominated the scrums but could not convert it into points. Handling errors and penalties at critical times frustrated a lot of good work. Eventually Glenwood took a quick tap and forced their way over Porties line near the poles. The conversion made it 7-3. Porties then lost no time in replying with a penalty to make the score 7-6. Glenwood then replied with a penalty of their own to take the score to 10-6. Shortly after this Glenwood’s line in the person of “Sparks” slipped past Porties up the right hand line and enabled a team mate to score in the corner to make the final score 15-6. Full marks to Porties for their “never give” up attitude. No quarter was asked in this game and none given. The game was played in a wonderful spirit and the teams clapped each other off at the end. All in all a great game.
@HORSEFLY NO.1: which 5 or 6, I only saw Khanyile and a cameo from Kenny Van Niekerk, otherwise looked mostly 2nd and 3rd team players. That James Venter kid looks great on the flank, maybe pushing for 1st team..
@Grasshopper:
from what I know, about 5 or 6 Glenwood 1st team players played against DHS. But a good win nonetheless and further highlights the work needed to be done by School.
@star: they lost on a wet pitch, these things happen in cricket…..Hilton are a good side too!
@Speartackle: Shirley soek jou nommer.
Hou net by feite- realiteit.
@BOG: Bel my
@Tjoppa: Frikkie= FW. Med24= News 24.
@Tjoppa: Geen maag……….8 pack
@Speartackle: Jou ligsinnigheid in ‘n ernstige gesprek is somtyds onnodig.
@Tjoppa: Mike Bolhuis
@BOG: Verskoon my asseblief my onkunde, maar wie is Frikkie en M24.
Vandag, huil Frikkie krokodiltrane.
@Tjoppa: Wonder wanneer laas daar enige ‘op’winding was
@BOG: Can I ask you then a honest question. And I hope you can answer with the same honesty. Did you really believe the change of govermunt will not result in what you criticize today?
@BOG: Hoe voel daai ‘flexi’ na so rukkie in die koue windjie?
@Andre T: Ek slaap “flexi- ure”
@Tjoppa: Not at all. Under the old dispensation, I was an outspoken critic of that regime. But my moral compass does not change with time and governments. What was wrong then, is still wrong now. When have I ever criticized anyone for being a certain colour, per se? Im waiting ! Are you avoiding or denying the Thom incident? I dont think the joke is misplaced and since when is a reference to a wife and children discrimination? I have them as well. I was disadvantaged before and after 1994.
@Andre T: He can only blame himself then. I am a happy chappie in my skin thank you very much.
@Tjoppa: No, he is a currently disadvantaged
@BOG: If we are talking about black people on this forum you always have nasty remarks. Are you a racist Bog?
@BOG: Is jy 24 uur n dag wakker?
@Grasshopper: Was his wife and children impressed by his performance?
@ Grassy- talking about” real” cricket what happened with GW against Hilton. GW Ists were 80 odd all out and I think the school as a whole only won one game. Surely that cannot be right.
@Grasshopper: Is that a u/19 or u/23 league?
@Woltrui: Oh do you mean the baseball? Glenwood kicked Westville’s butt in real cricket a few weeks ago, Andile P ripping through them to leave them about 80 odd all out…he was not available yesterday as going on tour with SA Under19’S…
@Woltrui
Westville1st cricket beat Glenwood by 26 runs in semi of KZN Coastal T20 comp. Play Northwood in final .
@Woltrui-
Any truth in the rumours up north that Westville kicked Glenwoods butts yesterday in the Coca Cola T20 semi finals?
@BOG: So right – they’ll be from Durban
Star – Glenwood would never think Westville are underdogs – with this being the first high intensity game of the season anything can happen –
That’s why we should play home & away games against the ‘Ville
@star: When you see a group of well behaved boys, you must know where they are from. Enjoy the swimming
Star: I think we will all be carrying the underdog tag against GW this year I am afraid.
But, it makes it all the more exciting, if any of us pull off a win, it will be fantastic to watch
RBugger- Westville will not mind taking the underdog tag. But just bear in mind 2 years ago when GW also had a team packed with CW stars( including some who were a bit problematic ) and the outcome was not so cut and dried.
@Andre T: A good comparison-“Very similar to Speartackle, just completely different”
@Speartackle: Hope you’re watching it right now. I think this Miller oke is from George Campbell. He klapped Roelfie from Port Natal for 34 runs in one over. It is definitely this Port Natal Nite Series cause I saw a Chetty, a Ajmal and a Maharaj there, sure I also saw a few Shaiks there as well
@Speartackle: Yes, very similar to the original Benson & Hedges Series, just completely different.
How does this nite series work? How many overs a side? Shortened run ups?
@Greenwood: I would be very surprised if Westville come anywhere near GW this year.
No offence to Westville at all, but you just have to look at the players of GW – Tredoux, Coetzee, Jonas, Spam, Vidima,Joubert – all Craven Week players with an extra years experience.
In fact, I will be surprised if any KZN team can match GW this year – think it is their year, only one who I feel can maybe surprise you, is M College.
Star
School was at full strength and did not play badly at all – they were fired up
& they might surprise a few teams this year
– it looked like the Gwd team spent the holidays training
By the way – saw your coach Grant Bell at the match – left after half time
– having a peek at the opposition ? – 15th March approaching fast ……
Bonthuis
any relation to Burra ? are you drinking partners ? same tone -same Jibes !
@ Grassy- either way it is a good result for GW. I wonder if DHS were at full strength and were possibly experimenting with combinations.
Did you also see that article on Sharksworld about Cooper getting married where a blogger commented that the best man was a WOB. To which another blogger responded that a WOB by definition is always the “best” man.
@Bonthuis: it’s because the team in mostly 2nd and 3rd team, 2 1st team players came on as reserves. That certainly ain’t the 1st team…think boet…
Why do Glenwood have to compete under the name “Glenwood Inv”, are they scared of losing to Northwood or George Campbell again and blowing their chances of a top 10 national ranking to early on? Food for thought
RBugger
mostly 2nd team & some 3rd team guys – I know this cause my son
was on the sideline with quite a few 1st teams players in school uniform
Good win for Gwd and a spirited performance from DHS , but somehow
I don’t think School will be looking forward to playing the GM at Dixons this year
@CyndiAtRugby: Very good, makes the win all the more impressive
@RBugger: It wasn’t – there are a number of boys who played 1sts last year who didn’t play.
@Tigger: Was it a near full strength Glenwood side?
Port Natal 8 GC Nil
Glenwood Inv A 26 DHS 1st 5
@CyndiAtRugby: Yep, Carel Swart was a great example…awesome athlete!
Many of Glenwood’s potential 1st and 2nd team players are top athletes and swimmers. They work around the different training schedules and most participate in swimming, cricket, water polo or basketball in the 1st term.
I seem to recall that the big athletics events happen in the 2nd half of the year.
@Grasshopper: College 1 I think, Marcel Coetsee
@burra: how many under19’s this year? Glenwood 2 in Spam and Vidima…
I can’t wait to see our first game against DHS and plus we had our 1st and 2nd team trials yesterday. Its looking pretty good
Hopper – read as ” whilst rugby season in progress”
Remember the rugby season is from Jan to late August
take Corne Vermaak he was lightning fast and would have been a great full time athlete …
Roger
I should imagine this would apply to 1 & 2nd team IMO
take any top rugby school & i’m sure the players would be happy to stick to Rugby only – at the end of the day it would be their choice though – no guns to heads here
I was a good athlete at school – at the Sa champs if there were 200 spectators at the champs that was a lot – mostly family and friends –
Play 1st team at a top rugby school up to 10,000 spectators – no contest!
@beet: Hi Beet, Any update regarding the Union’s games on the stadium. It was well attended last year and the boys really enjoyed it. Dates would be great as the boys are away in Vryheid at the beginning of March and at Grey at the end of March,early April.
@Greenwood: Rubbish, they can’t play another winter sport, summer sports are open and most play waterpolo to keep up fitness and ball skills. Most do athletics in term 3 after rugby too….
@Greenwood: really – bit dictatorial isn’t it – forcing talented sportsman to choose so early?
Valke
From what I hear from my Son at Glenwood – if you play rugby at top level
@ Gwd you cannot partake in other sports –
Don’t you get resistance from the athletics coaches when your rugby start this early ?
Or don’t you select the athletes for these early tournaments ?
@beet: about DHS and Toppy, read here; http://books.google.co.za/books?id=x82xwEogJfYC&pg=PR6-IA22&lpg=PR6-IA23&ots=rTf57Q6kkE&focus=viewport&dq=toppy+hortop&output=html_text
This tournie will be a good opportunity for DHS to get to the right sort of fitness level ahead of the season proper. Conditioning has looked like an issue for DHS teams in recent seasons, so it will be interesting to see how they go with 6 short games behind them as opposed to a game vs KZN Dev or a N.Natal team to start the season.
@Grasshopper: Both Northwood and George Campbell felt that they were playing too much rugga in a season. Northwood have withdrawn from the PNNS and Campbell opted out of the Bizsport.
Why did Northwood withdraw? Looks a good opportunity for teams to try combinations and gel before the full season kicks in.
