I’m from Danville West Mr Tufts. The neighbour is called “Brannas slap worsie” Van Zyl. If you call a guy “clutchplate” (to quote Mr Mculley’s Workshop) we take it as a compliment.

Geagte Mnr Roos.

Congrats to Glenwood boy Andile Phehlukwayo for making the SA Schools cricket team, go green! Well done to Rondebosch with 3 picks and KES with 2. I wonder what the record picks for one school is?

@Ploegskaar: No, I am a Cheetah – and I shouldn’t say this – but in some way I enjoy the Bulls being bullied from school level right up to super 15 level. I, however also enjoy it when the Stormers lose. Only joking!

But judging from the sporting results, your conclusion about the Bulls becoming a cricketing province might be right. Not entirely though – only at school level – as the Cobras will continue to beat the Titans, especially with Dale Steyn now down south.

@Ploegskaar: So Paul Roos, Paarl Gim and Paarl Boys High play cricket for Boland, but rugby for WP. Nevertheless, due to some superb fast bowling, Boland managed only 79 runs against the Bulls … sorry Northerns. Northerns win by 62 runs.

Glad to see cricket still the same as it was in the 90s. S/suburb boys show up and get picked. Us guys north of the curtain have to make up the non travelling sides. Always loved how the the PD players from Bishops and Rondebosch made the side cause they really at a big disadvantage.

@Roger: Maybe because historically only s/subs boys have been and are still considered decent cricketers here in the Wes Kaap. Selections over the years (this year case in point) have been traditionally dominated by boys from Rondebosch, Wynberg, Bishops, SACS and a few other obscure Soutie schools, so PRG, Gym, Boishaai and Landbou players at least get a fair opportunity in the Boland.

Interestingly players from the n/subs are apparently good at nothing, if we look at both cricket and rugby provincial selections over the years. They must be whiling their time stealing shit and smoking tik by the look of things.

By the way, PRG, Gym, Boishaai and Landbou have played their rugby under the banner of Boland schools in the past, but because they obviously dominated Boland selections (and were better/faster/stronger than the WP CW team), they were asked to piss off. Truth is, they are wanted nowhere and should be playing at the CW as a WP Country Team. The cry-baby s/subs and disgruntled n/subs schools can then have a WP Peninsula Team.

@ kcob- I wondered why Tristan has stats in both the U17 and U19 tournos. I presume that Nick is injured. If so such a shame as he was one of the guiding stars for Westville for the last 2 seasons and one of the real reasons for their on field success.

@ Pedantic- I think lucky not in the sense that they were not good enough but that from a balance perspective, the W/K had to provide batting support and that a choice should have been made between the 3 allrounders. There also seemed to be a shortage of spinning options and so maybe an opportunity arose there which was unexpected and so therefore luck played a part.
How is preseason going ? Not long now.

@star: Great debate … totally agree on the lack of balance, but remember, one or two players off form and what looked like a good idea turns into a poorly balanced team.

I think the team needed the top Westville batsman to fire and it just wasn’t his week – we all know how good he is over an extended period – on normal form, his contributions could have turned the results.

Also keep in mind .. with a 12 man squad there is very little room for error, especially with the enforced restrictions – the Kloof boy was clearly out of his depth but I’m certain his selection had little to do with school bias.

I agree stats can skew reality, but my point is that the Kearsney players (regardless of how many matches they lost at U14 level) all stepped up and contributed both with bat and ball – so if they were selected due to some sort of bias, at least they did their job.

My comment wrt to the W/K was purely based on his W/K performance – he was outstanding in that regard. You make a valid point that a W/K that could also bat might have been the way to go.

I honestly don’t know who the selectors were – I was away on a rugby tour when the trials were on and didn’t witness any of it. I’m sure you were there – who do you think was lucky to make it in the squad ?

@ Pedantic – they were always going to be light on specialist batsmen with 3 similar allrounders and a W/K who could not bat was only going to exasperate the problem. The results are in the book and would have been worse if a certain boy had not dug them out of a hole against SWD when it was not really his job. You must also be careful of averages when not outs can create all sorts of distortions. The balance was clearly out and the outcome easily predicted. Your stats show that apart from Tedder and the NW boy and a boy who was selected” primarily for his bowling” there were no other meaningful batting contributions. So the B team wicket keeper averaged less than 1 and you say it was a good selection. What difference would it have made if he had averaged in the 30s and 40s.Also how do you compare his stats against other players if he is playing in a different league. Unfortunately we will never know. I said Westville were the form team from U14 having lost only 3 games in 2 years.( and the ones they lost were by the narrowest of margins). How many games did Kearsney lose over that same period? And there were also other boys that had proven themselves over this extended period( again in the book) This is not just about Westville as DHS were also a quality side and they had zero reps. I heard one of their stars has given up cricket. I would hate to think it was from becoming disillusioned with the game. I wonder if you can clarify who the selectors were and from what schools and if they have been retained. I just want accountability my old friend.

@star: After reading your comment “KZN Coastal won 1 out of 5 games”, I went to look at the results.

You’re right, but it could also be said that “KZN Coastal only lost 1 out of 5 games – they only lost to the mighty WP team” – sounds quite different ?

    Gauteng v KZN Under-15s – Match drawn
    Western Province Under-15s v KZN Under-15s – WP won by 5 wickets
KZN Under-15s v Free State – Match drawn
    Boland v KwaZulu-Natal Under-15s – No result
KZN Under-15s v South Western Districts – KZN won by 38 runs

@star: I’m not sure who you consider as the form teams at U14, but this was an U15 tournament. As always there are going to be some unlucky players who truly deserve to be there, but it’s not always a school bias that enforces that with only 12 places available.

I guess you feel that Westville was the form U14 team? If so, the Westville reps didn’t exactly set the pitch alight at the CSA U15 tourney in 2012.

Top batting averages came from two KC players (one who was selected primarily as a bowler). Best bowling came from Glenwood and I must say the last minute W/K selection was a good one.

    Check out the stats:

    Westville:
    2 Players – Total Runs: 12 (6 + 6) – Combined Batting Average: 2.5 (2 & 3) – Total Wickets 3

    Kearsney:
    3 Players – Total Runs: 253 (169 + 26 + 58) – Combined Batting Average: 40.87 (56.3 & 8.3 & 58) – Total Wickets 9

    Kloof:
    1 Player – Total Runs: 4 – Batting Average 1.3 – Total Wickets 0

    Glenwood:
    4 Players – Total Runs: 55 (47 + 6 + 1 + 1) – Combined Batting Average: 3.85 (11.8 & 3 & 0.3 & 0.3) – Total Wickets 13

    Northwood:
    2 Players – Total Runs: 182 (85 + 97) – Combined Batting Average: 26.8 (21.25 & 32.3) – Total Wickets 8

@star: Boet, Andile Phehlukwayo made SA Under19 and is one of the best allrounders in the country he would have been first pick, Wissing has proved himself over the past 2 seasons and Madwe is a good fast bowling prospect, all 3 deserved their places in the KZN team. Westville top 3 based on subjective ranking, the rain again saved your bacon vs Glenwood. Westville were good, but top 3…..hmmm

@star: Looking at the side, Glenwood only had 3 playing Veernan, Botha and Grobbelaar. Grobbelaar made 55 against EP, 19 vs Boland, both highest scores for KZN. Botha made 26 vs Border, also the highest score for KZN. Westville had 2 in the side Xaba & Scott. The team just got pulverised….no excuses…In the KZN Inland vs KZN Coastal game Coastal did well scoring 151/1 vs Inland’s 137/8….

Yes I can in respect of the U15 because I watched from very close range and it was a joke, ( and it has been repeated). Look I am not arguing for Westville to have more KZN reps. I am arguing for more honest equity and when it is blatantly wrong to speak up. If Westville have a non performing side then they must not be rewarded on the provincial level. The question needs to be asked why you feel that does not apply to GW. Look at the current Westville Ist team which is in the top 3 in the country and yet GW have more reps. Where does it all end?

There are a few in that side who are destined for great things. Hope and Wiffen are already showing that, both still U14. Matt Dicks has started delivering on early promise. The new indoor centre at College will transform cricket there, largely takes weather out of the equation, the new director of cricket is seriously on the ball. Some golden years arriving for College cricket, you heard it here first.

@ Grassy- I hate to be a dog with a bone but I posted previously on the U15 selections for last year and said that if there was no accountability then the same outcomes will be achieved. In 2012 KZN Coastal ( who were hosting the event) won 1 out of 5 games ( against the minows SWD). The team consisted of 8 GW and Kearsney boys. The 2 form teams from U14 had 2. A GW B -team player made the team having not originally been invited to the trials. Guess who were most represented on the selection panel. I would hazard a guess that the same bias has occurred and the same smug team are at the helm. The reason I brought this up then was to create parallels with the CW selections. We need to break this toxic cycle and make those selectors accountable or the pain of groundhog day will persist.( and not just for the schools concerned but for our provincial pride)

Great batting yesterday from KZN Coastal, posting 225 for 5 declared, but not enough time to bowl Gauteng out. Glenwood’s Gareth Wissing with 70 and Kearsney’s Wallace with 72, great partnership although a little slow at a strike rate of 64 for both. The Gauteng bowling was toothless! Seems KZN inland are getting klapped though. What is more concerning is KZN under 15 getting klapped by all
