Star-studded lineups for Die Burger final

The recent returns from injury of Paarl Gim’s lock JD Schickerling and centre Ryan Oosthuizen, two players that haunted Outeniqua during Gimmies 37-25 victory back in April, is bound to have a significant effect on the outcome when the two sides meet again in this year’s Burger Trophy main final. The final will feature the highest number of SA Schools players in a school match this year, not to mention the many other outstanding provincial players that will also be showing off their skills.

Schickerling was very forceful as a ballcarrier during that encounter while Oosthuizen’s perform had just about everyone talking about him as an SA Schools definite with some even suggesting he was the best centre in the country. Sadly both players picked up injuries in the lead up to Craven Week and missed out on the week long national under-18 week altogether.

The two are but some of the star players that will be on display. Gimmies will look to once again count on their dynamic SA Schools loose-forward duo of captain Rickus Bothma and Jacques Vermeulen, while somewhere in the back three lurks another SA School’s player in Grant Hermanus who was so impressive during the Paarl Interskole match.

The Kwaggas have a setback. SA Schools wing Duhan van der Merwe is a doubtful starter. Van der Merwe is both quick and brings with him physical presence send to none out wide. Apart from this and flank Lian van Schalkwyk who has not played all term, Outeniqua will field a strongest possible line-up. This includes the some of the hottest backline talent in SA this season: Remu Malan (9), Dewald Human (10) and Warrick Gelant (12) are not SA Schools without good cause. They are deadly on attack. Douw Schoeman (13), Leighton Eksteen (14) and Hennie Barnard (15) are quality players as well. Working against them though, is the poor weather being experienced in the Cape at the moment.

If Outeniqua want the desired result out of this final, much will depend on their forwards. They cannot afford to be bullied up front by Gim and their lineouts simply have to function much better than they did back in April.

Paarl Gim are not just an outstanding team on the front foot. On a few occasions they have put daylight between themselves and their opponents with stand out defensive organization and excellent disciple in the contact zones.

In spite of the weather, this is fitting way for both schools to end a highly successful season. Gim are still being talked about as the number one team in SA in many circles. While Kwagga supporters want the last say for the 2013 season to be that they beat the best and therefore…

Should be a cracker!! Could be a very good idea to arrange a national final between the Burger Champ and the Beeld trophy champ as from next year or in the future, in under 14/15/16 A teams and 1st team levels. Good attract a lot of interest…

    1. Is dit soos die Beeld Trofee bv. Makro, Groot, Medium en Klein skole?
    2. Wat bepaal deelname bv. speler of seuns getalle?
    3. As dit vrywillig deelname is, hoeveel skole neem deel en hoeveel nie?

@PaarlBok: Kwaggas are the underdogs and wet weather should suit Gim’s style a lot better but it could also mean that the outcome is determined by a single bit of luck or misfortune depending on who you root for.

    I say Gim by 7.
