Affies produced a stunning second-half comeback to overturn a 23–5 deficit and claim a dramatic 40–37 victory over Boishaai in one of the most compelling contests of the festival.
Boishaai were outstanding in the opening half, dominating both territory and collisions to take control of the match. They punished Affies’ inaccuracy ruthlessly, with 16 of their 23 points coming directly from opposition errors. Scrumhalf Liam de Villiers opened the scoring from close range before centre Wian Delport added a second, as Boishaai’s high line speed and physicality shut down the Affies backline.
Affies, by contrast, were overly ambitious, repeatedly attempting to move the ball wide without first establishing a platform. They were tactically outmanoeuvred, with their only breakthrough coming via powerful wing Dandre Brink, leaving them trailing 23–5 at the break.
The second half, however, told a completely different story.
Affies returned with far greater composure and variety, immediately shifting the momentum. Prop Ewald van Niekerk crashed over following a strong carry from standout left wing Dehan Botha, and sustained red-zone pressure soon forced a penalty try, cutting the deficit to 23–19.
Boishaai responded well, reclaiming possession from the restart and building through multiple phases before Dante Davids beat several defenders with sharp footwork to score under the posts, stretching the lead to 30–19.
But Affies refused to relent. From deep inside their own 22, Dehan Botha ignited the contest with a remarkable individual effort—breaking tackles, regathering a kick ahead, and linking with support to set up Rico du Plessis for a crucial try.
Boishaai struck again through prop Bates Winshaw, who powered over to make it 37–26, but the momentum had shifted. A superb cover tackle from Aleit Stander denied Affies what looked a certain try, yet the pressure continued to build.
Fourie Roberts then dived over from close range to reduce the gap to 37–33, following clever interplay from a broken lineout. Affies continued to probe, and after winning a key holding-on penalty and finding touch, they suffered a brief setback at the lineout. Undeterred, they delivered a massive scrum tighthead, worked the ball across the field, and replacement centre Estian Marx broke through to score the decisive try.
In a remarkable turnaround, Affies completed the comeback to snatch a 40–37 victory at the death—capping a match defined by momentum swings, tactical adjustments, and sheer resilience.
