Czech out the Glenwood team

Glenwood continues to benefit from Czech schoolboy rugby players who arrive each year from various clubs to experience South African rugby. They come with different skill levels and backgrounds, but what stands out is their hunger to improve. Whether in the 2nds or 6th team, they work hard, adapt quickly, and embrace the physical and tactical demands of the game.

The exchange runs deeper than rugby. It is hugely beneficial for Glenwood’s players to mix with boys from completely different backgrounds. It broadens their perspective and reinforces just how privileged they are to play rugby in South Africa, where the opportunities and exposure are second to none. For the Czech boys, it’s a chance to test themselves in one of the toughest schoolboy environments in the world.

At the heart of this connection is Jakub Bednar. Initially arriving on exchange, the centre/wing enjoyed the experience so much that he committed to completing his Cambridge education at Glenwood, where he will matriculate in 2026. He featured in KZN derby fixtures and age-group sevens in 2025, and continues to make his mark both on and off the field.

A boarding house prefect, Bednar has earned respect for his maturity and work ethic. His parents, currently in Durban, have seen first-hand how he has grown — a testament to both the player and the environment that has embraced him.
