Its once again Rondebosch vs Wynberg in the Southern Suburbs title chase

Friday, 06 June 2025 is teed up for a proper clash in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs.

With SACS having been decimated by injuries and Bishops still looking a year away from becoming genuine contenders again, this year’s Southern Suburbs derbies are shaping up as a two-horse race between Rondebosch and Wynberg—the two leading schools in the region since the Covid era.

Bosch comes into the match riding an incredible 10-match SS4 winning streak dating back to June 2023. On their iconic Tienie Heyns Field, they will take to the park as favourites. Their squad is well-balanced, anchored by highly rated loose forward Josh Neill, who brings both intelligence and grit to the breakdown. Around him is a pack full of edge and physicality. At scrumhalf, Caleb Bell has taken the reins, and his explosive burst from the base injects real X-factor.

While the backline might not yet offer the same creative structure or high-tempo execution seen during the David Simon–Dylan Miller 2024 campaign, it remains dangerous in its own right—more direct, but no less effective. Bosch wobbled slightly around Easter, but they’ve since regained their rhythm and look back to their brilliant best.

Wynberg, on the other hand, have had a slower, quieter start to the season. That said, this is a team of real substance—building steadily and peaking at the right time. Last year’s side was stacked with star power and made metres with ease, but their leaky defence often let them down. This season, there’s been a noticeable shift in hunger and structure on D. The statement performance so far? Forcing a high-flying, free-scoring Boishaai outfit to dig deep for an injury-time winner on the hallowed Hawthornden Field. That result turned heads—and rightfully so. They’ve got a formidable engine room, with no shortage of praise for the former Namibia u16 bruisers, Jaythen Orange and Tjeripo Karuhumba. Up front, they bring serious grunt and presence. Of course, the standout name in the squad is Yaqeen Ahmed, who’s been running out at inside centre this season—bringing poise, assertive directness, and plenty of class due to his elite skillset.

This is a massive derby coming up!

What a game, what a derby. Again I ask how Behardien has been left out of the WP squads???

Not sure where to post this, but SACS’ u16 flyhalf looks to be a proper, proper rugby player. I’d go so far as to say that he has to be one of the favourites for the WP Grant Khomo side this year. Waged a lone battle against PRG and looked like a million bucks.
