Tim Orchard, the Maritzburg College 1st XV rugby head coach, has decided to step down. A true embodiment of the Red, Black, and White, Tim was educated at College before returning to work as a Maths and History teacher shortly after his graduation. He has done a stellar job in his role as head coach.
His departure marks the end of an era, as there are now no remaining 1st XV teacher-head coaches in the Big 8 of the province’s main rugby league. Over the years, others have also stepped aside:
- Glenwood – “Toppie” Hortop was replaced by Sean Erasmus* after the 2007 season.
- Hilton – AJ Blume was replaced by Brad Macleod-Henderson after the 2015 season.
- Westville – Roland Norris was replaced by Jeremy McLaren after the 2016 season.
- Northwood – Torsten Sorensen was replaced by Grant Bashford* during the 2018 season.
- DHS – Ruan Lombard was replaced by Peter Engledow after the 2021 season.
- Michaelhouse – Grant Ball was replaced by James Fleming after the 2022 season.
- Kearsney – Neil van Heerden was replaced by Grant Bashford* after the 2024 season.
- Maritzburg College – Tim Orchard will be replaced by … after the 2024 season.
