The last time Affies were in Bloemfontein in 2017, they won an astounding 61% of their rugby matches against Grey College. It’s an incredible feat considering that fellow national rugby powerhouse Paul Roos left the Free State with 0% at the end of the 2018 rugby season and this past weekend HJS Paarl Boys’ High achieved a little over 31%.

After a promising start to the 2019 season, things have gone pear-shaped for the Affies 1st XV. In terms of records, the Pretoria Witbulle have conceded a school record number of points to both Paarl Gim (46) and Paarl Boishaai (39) en route to two heavy defeats. They also lost to KES and Westville for the first time ever in their school’s history, leaking over 30 points in each of those two losses. It effectively means that what looks like a decent Affies team when they play to their true potential, have now uncharacteristically only won two of their last seven matches.

Life promises to get even harder at Jock Meiring Straat against a Grey team that has proven to be ruthless against even the defences of their top ranked national opponents. From 11 starts in 2019 Grey has scored 580 points at an average of over 50 per game (conceding ±17 points per match in the process).

Grey’s best results against Affies:

Grey took their foot off the pedal. Big difference between Grey’s 1-15 and 16-23.
But a great win. Affies never gave up.

    2017: 28 (17-11-0) – 61% ;AHS
    2018: 28 (14-14-0) – 50% Gelykop

AHS wen die dag 8 keer.
Grey wen die dag 16 keer.
Gelykop op die dag 2 keer.

    Totale Wedstryde gespeel: 674
    Totale Wedstryde AHS: 277
    Totale Wedstryde Grey: 370
    Totale Wedstryde Gelykop: 27

Sal my speeldae teen hulle NOOIT vergeet of verruil nie.

    @Wondermaar:
In ‘n ideale wêreld, neh?

    Unfortunately…
Looking at some of the lower age group levels, it doesn’t seem that things will be getting any better in future…
Somebody will have to spend some money in the off season…

I think Affies GCB reminds me of the Boks playing NZ at the moment. NZ enters most matches as favorites but every now and then the Boks rise to the occasion and steal a win – that is why GCB supporters always have an uneasy feeling when playing Affies.

Don’t think that Affies has it in them to turn their season around, however a win against Grey would almost make all other results overlooked. Grey to win by 35+
