Baby Boks squad for Argentina tour

The South African under-20 team will play two friendly internationals against Argentina and a midweek game in Corrientes and Buenos Aires during April.

A 34-man squad has been selected.

Two new Class of 2012 players are new inclusions in the squad. They are Malcolm Marx (KES, Lions) and Aidon Davis (Daniel Pienaar, Kings), who both played for SA Schools in 2012. There is also a place for Sharks XV Vodacom Cup no.8 Johan Meyer (Queens College 2011). Meyer had been sidelined with an injury during the lead up to the 2013 season and therefore missed out on previous Baby Bok squad camps and matches.

Jan Serfontein and Sergeal Petersen were overlooked for selection because of their Super Rugby commitments.

    Had a random thought the other day, the Sharks’ 2 1st choice 8thmen are both EC boys, Keegan Daniel (Dalian) and Ryan Kankowski (Andrean) and both their Vodacom Cup 8thmen are also EC boys, Tera Mthembu (Dalian) and Johan Meyer (Queenian). Sharks love the EC loosies hey :lol:

    @Queenian: Saw Meyer playing in a Vodacom Cup game the other day he is going to be very good.

    Meyer has a bright future ahead of him he is big and quick and looks like a bok in the making.

    @BigDup: Allan does not qualify, he’s 21 this year, he actually turned 21 16 days ago. Josh Stander (no.10) is unfortunately injured at the moment, he had an op on his hip about a month ago and will only be able to play in August or July. JP Smith the no.9 hasn’t had any opportunities to play this year, so it was always going to be difficult to make the squad

    @Ludz,
    What has happened to the 9 and 10 that were at Queens last year? – thought we might have seen them in this squad. Does Allan Dell not still qualify as u20?

    Promising squad. Bodes well for senior rugby in SA.

    I wonder what the story is with Jacques, Eugene, Morne, Leneve and Justin, certainly with Justin Forwood and Jacques du Plessis who looked like 1st choices in their respective positions of loosehead prop and blindside flank

    @BOG: agree, that boy was just huge, the big worry is that he’s getting bigger and in senior rugby, he’ll just become to slow. He can’t afford to be slow as he is primarily a destructive runner as opposed to a more thinking player

    @Ludz: I know this is not based on scientific data, but an oversized schools backline player, seldom lasts long in senior rugby

    @Vleis: as destructive as he was at Craven Week, there are better centres, Jan Serfontein, Justin Geduld, Dries Swanepoel, Tyler Fischer

    Awesome to see my boy Johan Plank Meyer in the squad, really ugly injury last year that limited his u19 season to only 1 warm up game. Odd that Dawie said he was part of his plans for last year’s side 8-O , surely would’ve been included in a couple camps if he was and he wasn’t injured during the campaign as Dawie suggests :-?

    Where is the big centre that played for the Bulls CW team last year? I think his surname is Janse van Rensburg. Unless he is injured, he should be the first name on the team sheet.
