@Gungets Tuft: Where ar you that you have found some dry weather lately?
@PaulRoosPa: The buying often ruins the attitude and pride especially when the new ‘import’ battles to acclimatise and lacks performance.
I have heard of a few boys who are in Grade 10, moving school in the last week of Grade 10 so that they are not new to the school in Grade 11. Now there is a nice lesson in ethics to teach your child.

@CyndiAtRugby: This is exactly why buying a team is not working at school boy level. You can not buy attitude, ethics, pride and values. By buying I mean getting boys to come in gr11 and 12.

@CyndiAtRugby: Don’t sound so surprised. When it is dry weather and the traffic behaves too well I have plenty of time to sit on my truck and read. Pick up all sorts of interesting little sound bytes which I toss out when I need to look clever. It improves even more if I sit out of the way of the heavy diesel pollution :-|

Talking about next years U14s,don’t know anything about their current U15s apart from what you guys tell me…
As for next years new boys, eish its bad, it also seem the U14 swimming side will still be strong but not exactly as strong as before…Clifton buying loads in that regard.

@Gungets Tuft: Damn I’m agreeing with you way too much lately  I train people for a large corporate and have found you can train any skills with relative ease, but when it comes to attitude, ethics and values, it is a challenge.
While I believe Glenwood’s 2nd team were a talented bunch, I also know that their heads were right and their coaches were phenomenal in keeping them humble and focussing their attitudes – you can see the difference in the way they play.

@ Star : Thanks, I see the squad is extending. Meaning plenty of depth. Sad to hear about how Couch did his collar bone, really needs to watch it now. Guess he’ll only be back next year. Looks like the u15’s for next year are shaping well. Many talented boys, the team is sure to contend for top honours

@star: Yes – he was DRSU Under 14 Vice Captain this year. Solid player with plenty scope for the future. Great addition to the team.

That means WBHS now have the 2012 DRSU U14 Captain + Vice, both good looking forward prospects.

@Griffon-I think Horsy is just fishing.2 more boys however seemed to have appeared at the current U15 preseason(U16 2013). There is a wing who is also a top basketball player(very tall) and another flank( in addition to the Werda center who Pedantic feels will be a good addition to the squad). The flank and flyhalf(Nguni) who it was thought were leaving also seem to still be very much part of the mix and so Westville is spoiled for choice in many positions.Couch has however popped his collar bone doing weight training. This is an area that needs to be closely supervised at this age level.

@CyndiAtRugby: Heard a businessman the other day, reffing to the way he employs people – “Employ the right attitude, teach the skills”. Different to sport only that there has to be a certain level of born talent, but the principle is the same. No amount of talent and skill overcomes a poor attitude. Perhaps that is where the downside of big scholarships comes in at age 14 – it can breed a sense of entitlement that dulls the hunger for success. I have seen it in a number of cases. Sometimes they get it back, sometimes not.

Guess we will have to see what happens. It is sad but at the same time, it is also life – you are responsible for your own actions and must work maintaining and doing better all the time. Last year one of the coaches told us “If you are not working towards your dream, someone else is working to beat you there.” A good lesson to learn.

@CyndiAtRugby: They will apply but the financial aid will not cover the BE as the family lives in Durban. For financial aid I guess he would end up at Northwood as it is 5km from where they live. Should probably have gone there from the start.

@Gungets Tuft: If that is the case then the parents must request financial aid – totally different from a bursary or scholarship.
@HORSEFLY NO.1: The right attitude and work ethic make a major difference in all aspects of life. There are some enormously talented kids out there who have the attitude that they only need to put in 1/4 of the work to be as successful. That gets me

Etzebeth found not guilty, as anyone who saw the video knew from the start. However – the result that bar stewarts wanted is in the bag – a gentle smearing of his name and something that will be trotted out again and again in future. Whenever the Boks run out in a test, someone will mention “enforcer Etzebeth who is known to hover on the edge of the law, escaped a citing for eye-gouging”.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Can’t imagine why a promising rugby player would go to Clifton, if he wants to do something with his rugby. Not knocking Clifton – for what they are I like the school, but not rugby. They have a more than useful hockey programme and their polo we all know about.

Strange about the 3rd term stuff, applications are normally done and dusted by then, especially the BE – perhaps he was on the waiting list (of over 300 for 2nd form BE entry) and someone else withdrew. We had a very, very good sportsman that came into the 2nd Form BE last year in the 3rd term – on the wait list, quite a few boys left, he got in. Straight into the A teams in hockey, rugby, cricket and is a good little track and field athlete as well. Bonus. I can imagine lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth when they could not make a spot for him from 1st term.

yes thats very true. there are too many of those who think that the school cant afford to lose them and in the end just chill. come end of year theyve lost their bursaries. its also funny that its usually the OK kids who chill, the best of the lot usually work their asses off even though the schools would do loads to keep them there. all comes down to attitude it seems.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: From my understanding they were. There are requirements stipulated in the bursary which are standard across the board. The boy doesn’t meet those criteria the bursary/scholarship goes. The boys in question have been chilling and very confident that they would continue on bursary. It is sad for the kids in question but if you want to get a bursary you must work for it.

@QC86: Hahha .. no, I wasn’t looking to see who had won, DPHS normally do a write-up of the games. The game is nice to watch at that level. It is not without it’s aggression, but it doesn’t have the professional approach to spoiling that you see in higher age groups. Sorry I missed it. Being a night game there is no excuse, not even perfect surf.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Not sure I agree. I reckon there was at least 1 boy in the DHS U14 (rugby, polo) this year who would have been on all the shopping lists, including Kearsney and Westville. Just Kearsney BE fees are triple what DHS costs, so unless the boy is getting R100K in tuck shop money …, he went there because his old man is an Old Boy who is very involved in the resurgence of DHS. More reasons than just the money!!

College probably not getting too many DPHS boys this year, looks like Kearsney have been going “trolley for trolley” – with 2 particular moms at DPHS leading the recruitment charge. If College get DPHS boys this year it is due to the superb performance of DPHS boys at College in the last few years. 2010 head boy, 2012 Head Boy, Deputy HB, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and U16A captains as well as 1st cricket captain. That made the Patter at DPHS and speaks volumes – mostly about the matching ethos of the schools. There is not always a spook behind every bush. Not that it matters – the yearbook will tell us all – in Red, Black and White – who the scholarship winners are.

I understand what are saying…I just think boys go to the best offers, look at the SA U16 boy who’s gone to Northwood, surely it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why he’s there…the whole winning team thing is important yes but it comes after scholarship offered.don’t be fooled by Glenwood, they have way more than 30 boys on scholarship there,I have worked it out…

Also, can’t wait much longer to see the DPHS list of boys on scholarships for next year, will be interesting to see who brought the biggest cheque book this year… Think College was one of those this time around

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Relax boet, I was not trying to insult DHS, just asking a question. I was referring to OPEN level, thought that much was pretty clear. To find better than you already have at open level you are looking at some competitive boys who are :

    1. Already spoken for somewhere – so you are making them offers to move.

    2. Competing with the other schools for their services. My point is that right now Glenwood and Westville are more attractive destinations for the really good kids because they are schools who are currently winning. I leave KC, House, Hilton and College out of this because a Durban kid would need to board and once they reach U18 level they have pretty much settled.

At U14 and U15 it is a different matter and DHS are doing good things.

There is so much talent in KZN boet, not that hard to find it.only reason why we haven’t recruited I’d because the coach has said he wants to keep the same players and have them gel…unfortunately I can’t say the same for everyone else.the state of a schools rugby has very little to do with where the very best go.they. Will go to the best offers or where they’ve always wanted to go.I mean, look at our next years intake of rugby players, as good as we’ve evr had and I…nah lll let you see for yourself.

@beet: Agree. If there is an agreement that stops recuitment into matric and into U19, then that’s it surely. No real point in then trying to get extra points for not recruiting to fill gaps in Grade 10, or at the start of Grade 11. It is like claiming that you are more law abiding because you travel at 90kph on the highway when the limit is 120.

My stance on approaching boys playing for your traditional opposition remains the same – not on.

Deal with the morale fallout in your own time.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Horsie – you don’t think that it might be tough for DHS to try to recruit at open level. Not trying to be harsh but aspiring players would not put their last 2 years on the line in a team known to be weak. Evidence it Glenwoods ability to recru .. I mean .. attract your fly-half. Your U14/U15 is your best shot.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: DHS have had their fingers burnt in the after Gr.8 recruitment market. Maybe they have decided to take it easy for a while.

Anyway I find it hard to put down recruitment after Gr.8 when there are no set rules and every other person seems to have a different interpretation of what’s right and what’s wrong. It seems to me like all the big KZN schools (except maybe DHS right now) are either trying to get ahead, stay ahead, keep up or catch up and have IDed recruits as the way to do it.

@BoishaaiPa: It was and still could be a potentially big topic of intererst that one. Here we are talking about the Bulls model. Those 2 players had Bulls bracketed after their names on lists of who is going where after school. If say hypothetically that WPRU got in on the act, managed to make better offers, wanted to keep off the Bulls counter-offers or even just promise the kids a chance to play for WP u19 next year while still at school, then the Union would probably want to relocate the boys. But this is just guessing on my part. For the record I hope they stay put. Everyone is expecting big things from Outeniqua next year.

@BoishaaiPa: It’s not like it is new tho. The Bulls have made Boland their home away from home and KZN seems like they have taken a liking to the E/Cape. I’d like to believe that kids get treated really well in our schools tho. They are looked after and are not put in a flat because a school does not want to accomodate them in the BE.

I have a feeling the Bulls model will take off unless stricter national rules are put in place. Certainly all got to witness the benefits of recruiting PD players rather than trying to develop them when the Bulls won Craven Week 2012. But apart from this, securing the post school services of players at a younger age might mean Importer Unions do not have a choice in this matter. No one wants to see a reoccurance of the JP Smith/Josh Stander incident where 2 SA Schools hopefuls were not even allowed to play at CW coz they had Bulls contracts.

I also heard a story last week about 2 Outeniqua boys and a WP school.

Italy vs NZ – 1 point out but others got it smack on. The big pool of 25 makes it tough to get bonus points, especially since even if you get it right on the money you share the points. Next week is going to be hairy to call … Ireland – Arg, Scotland vs Tonga, France vs Samoa, SA vs England, eeisch. Where’s that donkey…

@GreenBlooded: Over-legislated indeed. Who remembers the days when lifting was not allowed in the lineout, but there was an endless debate about whether it was lifting, supporting etc. So, drop the damn law. It has worked magnificently, given us a whole new dimension and skill, with none of the opinion nonsense that used to plague the lineout. Just crouch, set and that’s the end of it, it will make the engage fairer avoiding the early hit. Another area is the ruck/maul, now complicated even further with the so-called 5 second rule, where the ref has carte blanche to interpret how he (or Mrs Jordaan) likes, and cheat if he feels the need. Mark Lawrance will just get irritated with one team and proceed to blow them to death.

@Gungets Tuft: When I played the game as a dark arts practitioner – you know those guys with their IQ on their backs – the 2 scrums formed up and engaged when they were ready. Finnish and klaar. The whole cadence sequence now days is to me another of many examples where the game is over-legislated. I say this from the perspective of a spectator and a referee. It was brought about to reduce the number of reset scrums and scrum collapses which bring both a safety and a playing time improvement to the game – so say the statistics. I’m not so sure – you know what they say about statistics. DO these include all the penalties for not binding, touching the ground, not touching pre-engage, scrumming upwards – the list goes on.

Anyhow – I’m not too concerned about how this was interpretted last night because I was one of 2 or 3 which didn’t get my GSP yanked in the first game and rocketed up the charts by 10 places!!

@beet: Can anyone explain to me why the new law is so different. For all intents all that has changed is the length of the pause (which is still there, just without the ref squeaking “paaauuuuusse” while they steady themselves) and them a single syllable “Set” instead of the dual ennnnGuage, or ENguage where nobody knew when the hell to actually engage. Everyone is making such a big deal about it, I can’t see why, unless they are assuming that forwards are thick and need to be un-Pavlov’d. Even the “touch” is daft for me, the only reason I can see for it is to make sure that packs are close enough together – assuming that the ref is too stupid to get them there without a tape measure.

@Gungets Tuft: The NH have been using the new scrum engage laws and player 23 since their season started in Aug. If anything I thought this would give them a big advantage at scrumtime. Then again it doesn’t help if the props from the SH teams they face ply their trade in Europe anyway.

@beet: Tjaaas. I thought the ref was a bit OTT in the scrums though. A couple of times those scrums were just not viable yet the Welsh were pinned for no bind. Something has to change there – today’s skin tight jerseys make it impossible to get a bind sometimes and a penalty just seems too harsh. Failure to bind should be no more than a short arm, how can a bad bind be treated the same way as a deliberate or scrumming collapse after the ball is in.

@Andre T: And you dont participate in the drinking? And how is the Portuguese mother-in-law? Or are you busy upgrading again? Just dont fool yourself by convincing yourself that you are doing the upgrading. If a man was born in 1952, he needs to settle down. One needs someone to hold your hand when sitting down in your rocking chair. Soon, the only thing of you that will be “going out”, is your back and all the names in your little black book, are names of medical professionals.

@BOG: I’m staying on the outskirts of Klerksdorp, against the Bokslagtersvallei koppies with a lovely view towards Stilfontein’s mine dumps. When the wind blows, which is almost every day, the sand from the dumps form a kind of misty effect which we call Black Rain. People with sinus problems do not tend to last long here and cough medicines are even available on every street corner. Besides all this the men do drink a lot out here which in turn causes a surplus of lonely women.

@BOG: Sal interessant wees om die nuwe name in jul beginspanne die jaar te sien maar soos jy noem is akademie ook bitter belangrik in die hedendaagse rugbyspeler as jy in ag neem the way our open teams play with so much thinking and brains lately. Even the coach is apparently an intellectual freak. Sorry for switching languages but I forgot the pledge made by Ploeg. Please let me know when Schoeman Park’s fairways turn green as I’ve been there in mid summer playing on cement greens and yellow grass.

@Haker: I am not close to the rugby at Grey. I am a long distance but very enthusiastic follower, but from what I gather, yes, its looking good- from U14 up!. Add to that the boys from the Cape and elsewhere, who joins the school in Gr 10,11,not only to improve their rugby, but also brush up their maths and science.(LOL)I also hope that the coach who joined the 1st team in the second half of the season(Du Plessis, I think) will be in the mix from the start. And lastly, to gain some Free State culture and enjoy the fresh air amongst the green and lush valleys of Bloemfonteins west side.

@Haker: Difficult to leave it at that when you very unfairly include BL in your list of major complainers, but so be it, also looking forward to a good 2013 and hopefully the rugby, and not the officials, will dominate our discussions.

@BOG: FRom what I’ve seen at age group tournaments the last couple of years I predict Grey can look forward to a few good seasons again. Paul Roos will also be back with a bang from this year and I’m not too sure about Affies. They might experience some difficulty if key players get injured as their u/16’s from last year were very average.

@QC86: Tjaaas Beet – Tictakly astute. If I had paid attention at the end of the Rugby Champs I would have done exactly what you did. Will not make that mistake again but John M20 is looking hard to beat so far. I am going to resort to a “pin the tail on the donkey” approach – probably more accurate.

@star: Ask the College bloggers about my come from behind win last time. Basically I see my main rival as Klofiepa. Seems like he is the only one who hasn’t seriously considered giving the XanGo to his mother-in-law and therefore has plenty of incentive to win.

But honestly I don’t look at anyone else’s picks I just like picking when I’m fairly sure there won’t be any late withdrawals esp of key players.

@beet: Knowing that we are pre-dominantly communicating with the last outpost, we will stick to the English vernacular.I have my Free State Edition of the Oxford Concise besides me as an aid. No, jokes aside, my late mom was an Anglicized German (You only get that in the Eastern Cape), my late dad , a boer, but went to Selborne(had no choice- where is Skim?) Going to Grey, was a compromise (which I am grateful for). My wife (of many yrs) is English speaking, so to, my children. My son is even British, by BIRTH with passport and all, nogal. And the worst tragedy of all, is that my daughter is being courted by a Kearsney OB, despite clear markings on her forehead “Reserved for Grey OB” Other than poisoning, would ordinary Doom help to get rid of him? Otherwise, he is fairly decent.
