How far back does the ranking of teams go? Does anyone know?

If so what would the chances be to get a sheet of these rankings published for the past how many years this has been going?

Ek het weer gedink dat as Helpies se agterlyn nog meer onkant was het hulle saam met ons outjies gejol!..geen tackle release by omtrent elke tackle nie ens ens ens…gaan kyk maar ook weer die video. @beet: Definitely not writing off the private schools, but reality is that GW look the only real deal so far this year. It will be tough at the end of April but I agree with you that if we can do something there and then beat KES, we will be worthy of that Top 20 spot. What is the KES team looking like this year? and Wynberg…looked at the results of the other festivals but not sure what to make of them? And also PBHS…ALWAYS A TOUGH GAME FOR THE RBW. Thanks again for your effort in this blog Beet…always enjoy it and is very helpful in understanding the schoolboy rugby season! Enjoy…

@GreenBlooded: @GreenBlooded: Hey there…I watched RW at flyhalf most of last year and he is the real deal. Great flyhalf with an expansive game and a great eye for the gap. It was interesting yesterday to see him at scrumhalf and Muller at flyhalf. I agree with Beet that at the moment it may be the best option for MC. RW had a great game and along with JT they are good for the future. I like JT and his ability to run hard and have that extra increase in pace when needed. So it bodes well for the future…agree with most of the bloggers that MC seem to be lacking in size which is not unusual for them but the skills are also lacking which could hopefully change as the season goes on! RW and JT…Good un’s…will watch them closely!

@McCulleys Workshop: I prefer bloodless duels, so a friendly handshake and a well done to the winner after the game would suffice for me. if you read my original blog, I was in no way saying that MC would dominate this year, in fact it has been a year I have been concerned about since 2012. I just thought out of the top 30 may be a bit harsh…but that is my own opinion. I agree that GW will be top dog in KZN and the rest are all at best average and maybe a bit above. Which does bring DHS and Northwood into the balance and that is good for schoolboy rugby. The gap is most definitely widening and it does ring alarm bells for the future of good old fashioned schoolboy rugby! Look forward to meeting you…may schoolboy rugby win!!!

Attended St John’s over Easter. Thought rugby was of good standard. HM vs Boishaai – kon enige kant toe gegaan het. HM defnitief ongelukkig vir ten minste een drie. Dink Monnas HM miskien onderskat. Heard that on Monday when I think some Affies parents were discussing HM loss against them and HM doing well against Boishaai. Min te kies tussen top skole. Hoop spelers word opgepas. Verskeie great spelers gesien. Rugbygroete.

@Luvthegame: Ok, this is now a duel? Are we using muskets or swords on Meadows? The reality is, don’t start out over optimistically, unless you have good reason to (and after watching 10 min at DHS, you didn’t have reason to, neither did we), let the season speak for itself. College are at best average this year, as are House. It’s just a reality and no disrespect. You can’t expect to do a Houdini week after week when you lack size and sheer skill, coaching and tradition can only get you so far. I think all the KZN sides, except Grasshopper, will battle this year. It seems the gap between rugby academies and everyday schools, is widening.

@GreenBlooded: Not a great day for College rugby and not easy to be a 9 behind a pack under pressure but for what it’s worth I would stick with the 9-10 combo used today. Have seen Williamson in lower age-groups and think that he can gain confidence and add some creative touches down the line but decision centres around Muller who appears to be College’s best option at 10 right now. Most of the best attacking things that have happened to College this year have involved Guma, who needs to be in the game a lot more. College perhaps need to gamble with him at 15 where he would have space to counter-attack. Let the van Blerk who’s place-kicking is key, play on the wing. All the KZN teams bar Michaelhouse seem to have issues with backline fluency so not sure what the answer is at 13. MC has to juggle between Mjara, Duma and possibly Truter. One player who really stood out in the College backline today was the wing Gergan. Took some good highballs, strength to stay on his feet well and showed purpose with a few of his carries.

EG is a quality team and will be top10 more than likely…there were moments when College looked good but they were few and far between. We were beaten by a better team today…if we can get the right combinations and get some cohesion the season can turn for our good. @Luvthegame: I think you are certainly looking through those RBW lenses. I agree College has a lot of heart and a lot of potential – but there is a huge mountain to climb – and right now – we are rightfully out of the Top30 – no reason for us not to change that however – I certainly agree that we can pull off some big wins along the way – and I’m sure that all teams (with the exception of GW, Affies and Grey) are going have a good chance of College taking the scalp. GW, Grey and Affies with their big packs are going to take something special to beat.

But we need to hold on to the ball and get the points on the board. Dale and Selborne could easily have been a RBW victory – but alas – the scoreboard shows otherwise – and we need to give credit to @Playa and his team until next time!

For me Hudson Park should feature in the top 30 at this stage. I also think there is a difference between perceived strength and actual strength. Perceived strength we get from the 5/10 year ranking as Grassy says and the actual strength we get from the current year’s ranking.

I don’t dismiss the place of a long term ranking but the one that we are all accustomed to seeing attempts to portray the relative positions of current 1st teams in for the curent season. Using the Affies 2014 example, that showed a team ranked somewhere in the 30’s back then. I doubt anyone looked at that and arrived at the conclusion that Affies was a poor rugby school. It was rather an acknowledgement of a good school having a below average year, something that a 5 or 10 year based ranking would have covered up.

@4×4: Too much is read into under14 results, one can never equate a good under 14 bunch with a good 1st team in 4 years from then on. Far too much growing and psychological development for the boys to go through. A lock in grade 8 might be a flyhalf by matric. Agreed good coaching and sticking with the boys will produce the results later on.

@Tandem: It will be interesting to follow the Affies current under 14 and 15 teams as they do not have a magnitute of stars, and as such there develoment will be based on good coaching. It will be very interesting to see how these teams will fare in there matric years and if we will see a repeat of the 2014 season.

I have to comment that the under 15 team is coming around with leaps and bounds already this season and it appears that the coaching staff is commiting their pound of flesh to the party.

Agree with Tandem, a 10 year cumulative Top 20 is best. Flash in the pans are then avoided. We all know what a cumulative Top 10 would look like, Grey Bloem, Paarl Boys, Paarl Gim, Affies, Paul Roos, Monnas, Waterkloof & Outeniqua would be the start. Taking my school, Glenwood, for 80 years they were always top 5 in KZN and probably Top 50 in SA, no focus on rugby. Only since around 1998 have they focused on improving training, nutrition & bringing in the best grade 8 in take possible have they moved up to a solid Top 20 team. Only 5 years ago did they make the mistake of poaching a few players and obviously an age debacle, but generally they always contend with top 10 teams across the age groups. They are not flash in the pans, but a good rugby school now…

Kearsney, Diamantveld and Welkom Gim should rate better and to be in top 20.

Glenwood is going to get a top 5 position.

Waterkloof to drop out, replaced by Pietersburg or Rustenberg

Nelspruit to drop out of top 20, Paarl gim out of top10

The potential ranking suggested looks logical but we know these teams are so close that anything is possible and between the suggested top 10 any team can be in any of these positions . Frankly as said last year I personally cannot get the obsession of the ranking because as long as a team is consistently in top 10 every year then it means they are a very good rugby school . The fractions in the calculations between the various teams have too much to do with luck ,ref calls against your team on a given day , if you play home or away , injuries etc . Take last year as an example when Affies were no where on the rankings and now they are predicted to be nr 1 . Did that make them a bad rugby school last year and a good one this year ? It is much better to look at a schools progress over a weighted 5 year average because that take the once in a blue moon flash in the pan performances out of the equation .

@Luvthegame: Even if you want to write off the private school challenge, College have to go down to the Cape and play both SACS and Wynberg with a day’s rest between then head back home and go up to Jozi to play KES just a few days later. If the RBW can win those three, they deserve a Top 20 spot. Westville won’t be a pushover either.

Must be a really early season thumb suck…House riding on last year. Can’t see them in the top20 and they don’t play any of the big boys. Glen wood at 8 a stretch for me? No College in the top 30…they will win some big games this year. Dale could be a bit higher…and KC won’t be there at the end of the season. Big thumb suck at this stage…we will wait and see! Never write off the Red Black and White…some good quality players with loads of potential. Grey College will be. Big test up front but after that only Affies and maybe GW to pose a problem…excited for a great season!
