@beet: I was sitting between first team parents on the stands during Saturday’s match and you are right about this Southern Cape derby. For the boys this is one of, if not the most important game of the season. It’s also the game that determent the SWD champ. Something else that I saw again and can’t really explain. The only age group that was totally in favour of The Kwaggas was u/14 where they won all 3 games and by some margin. This was also the case 2 years ago and this year Oakdale won all 3 U/16 games.
Do some boys stop playing rugby or is it just a case of development?

Also huge is Oakdale beating Outeniqua. That’s a match I would really like to see televised. A derby of note.

Soos gewoonlik sal daar seker weer ‘n verrassing of 2 wees

I forgot to mention that Lwazi Monokali is the chap who left SACS for KES last year, which caused such a big furore. To be honest, I wish that he’d stayed at SACS, as St Alban’s would probably have won yesterday if he had.

On a related note, I wonder how strong SACS would have been this year if he had stayed there?

Was at the Stellenberg HHH games yesterday. Should have been more than 57-0, a few passes that didnt go to hand in first half but Stellenberg really played some attractive rugby in second half. Age group scores was something like u14 78-0, u15 72-0, u16 38-0 and second team game which was stopped 15 minutes early was 71-0. Second week in a row that we put these kind of scores up against opposition that is clearly not in our league.

Been a long time since DHS beat a top 5 side in KZN, honestly was expecting a better performance today. Not sure when Westville play them but could be a big score. I think it’s now going on 12 years since we last lost to DHS…

@Cappie: Affies is quite outstanding every time they came in our half they scored. Must say very impressed with the accuracy and the clinical nature that Affies play. Must say the Affies centres hurt us today and the boys will be very sore on Monday. I understand what it is important that we play Affies it some for the boys to aim for. Glad this has become regular fixture again in these last five years. Although I think in the five years there has been 110 rugby games played between the school we have struggled to a poultry 6 or 7 wins but ….. like I said earlier the boys enjoyed it. Great game of ruggas at Affies Plaas see you all at Collard next year

KES beat St Alban’s by 18 to 10 in a scrappy game at KES.

St Alban’s missed three or four very kickable penalties that might have made the difference, but I think that the result was fair. The main difference between the two sides was Lwazi Monokali who scored both of KES’s tries from his own half. He is one of five KES players (I think) to make one of the Lions provincial teams.

I was surprised to see Tony de Zorzi playing at flyhaf. He skipped the first half of the season as he’s been selected for the SA u19 cricket team.

This is my last whinge about referee training. Every game here at Affies including the 14 E game I am currently watching is being officiated by a union ref. The guys are learning and I am sure union is healthier for this experience they are gaining. On a rugby note although the Affies rugby is far superior to Jeppe’s the gap is closing and whilst the scores 5 years ago were mainly margins of more than 80 points now the mean margin is now 45 points and oddly the kids seem to be enjoying it.

Hoekom het Pierre Spies dan persoonlik namens affies by CP kom bemark?

Net ouderdom? Is dit nie so klein bietjie snobisties nie…?

Hulle is reeds by Prestige College betrokke.

@Ringo: Agreed – there is no substitute for game time. And a wise old ref (sadly now passed on) once said – it’s not about what game you get – it’s about getting a game. He knew then he’d never ref another game – and he was a test level ref cut down in his prime. A gentleman and a man who know that reffing is about more than the politics of which game you get and who gets to see you.

Good luck – and persevere through all the negativity that you come against. You keep positive and enjoy every minute.

@Ringo: Yes – ref development is rather lacking in general.

Various societies try different things – but in general the process of recruitment, training, development etc. could be greatly improved.

Again – the refs tend to get very little of the sponsorship monies that unions do. So perhaps this is part of the problem?

@CyndiAtRugby: Even better result then. KC wuold have had their boarders there to support, the uniqueness of the KC astro is a major issue, then even the lights are different when playing with a small ball (rather than a large rugby or soccer ball). Kudo’s.

KC must be bleak – they lost to College with a penalty, and then didn’t convert one of their own just before full time.

@Vleis: Payne hall is Sir Herbert Baker building. Might be wrong but I think Jeppe and St John’s are the only schools he was the architect off. Jeppe is the oldest boy school north of the vaal river. Sorry that is a bit of a plug. As an old boy and also the father of a young son. I am proud of my school long may it prosper soo that my lightie can enjoy the pleasure of being a member of the Jeppe family.

I too can take up the whistle. I am ref but need to put out a caveat that I am probably the worst ref in the world currently. But mostly I am a passionate rugga fan, especially the schoolboy variety which is more entertaining and competitive.

@umbiloburger: How much is generally collected, given that it is voluntary. My son is a born cynic (gets it from his mom) but he was hellovu impressed with Jess when she spoke at College 2 years ago, so it’s a cause I happily donate to, I just wonder how many Glenwood folk are content to donate each week?

For a cause this worthy, I am a little surprised that there is not more detail on the Glenwood website.

    @umbiloburger: @Zulu:

Warren Eveliegh – good mate of mine. He’s certainly competant and I enjoy his ‘laid back’ approach to the game – doesn’t get flustered and takes it in his stride. How he managed to get through the Durban Society politics to snag the game of the season is surprising – thought one of the prima-donnas would get it. Also, one of the few of the top okes who still walks amoung us mortals. Good on him – hope he has a cracker.

On the others – don’t know what goes on in Durban anymore.

@umbiloburger: I’ve found it mostly from the leafy ‘burbs. One Mommy a few years back threatened to sue Glenwood. I think she spent about R200 at the tuck shop during the day though. If you get there in the morning, you’ll probably get to see at least 5 top quality games of rugger at the princely sum of R2 per game…

While Jeppe are not the same without Green, they’re still a very good team. They provided four players in the Lions u18 team that drew with the Bulls on Tuesday. It would’ve been five if Green had played.

You seem to be lacking big tall locks at present, as I noticed that last year’s u16A flanks have played lock for the 1st team for most of this season.

@Vleis: to be honest my good man Tyrone Green the Jeppe 10 has been playing on bad knees this whole season which has affected his running pace…. the boy won inter high 300m hurdles opens when he was still under 15. But last year while playing for the lions sevens u18 seven team he suffered a severe injury and it was said he would not play all season. As you saw this past Sat without him Jeppe is a very ordinary team not at all top 20 material. My advice would be to wrap him in cotton balls and only use him for the last 4 games of the season. I think chances a slim to none against these affies pace bowlers with or without him….. but next year on Collard Ons gaan dai witbul vang …… see also can throw out some Kitchen Dutch

As I predicted in the College/GW game the team that got good front foot ball and were able to exploit the width of Kings Park would dominate( and did they) The lesson for Westville is to not allow the likes of Palvie go forward ball (which they are able to do) and cut down the space of the GW backs who run hard( if not a bit lateral). Urgency/speed off the line is required and shape to counter that threat and it will be game on.
GW will have home ground advantage and OB support. Westville however are presented with a challenge and opportunity to turn a rival school over on ” their day”. These challenges are to be prized and not resisted . The last time this was achieved I think was College in 2009.

Wie sê hierdie is nie Affie plaas nie?

I guess when a bunch of boys who have played A team rugby for top primary schools throughout their lives all of a sudden find themselves in the under 14 C/D team, it can be demoralizing, and well, most will quit. It doesn’t matter to them that there are 3/4 teams behind them.

@Grasshopper: I don’t actually know what I’m trying to point out, I’m just surprised. As Rugger Fan says, these big derby days have a unique buzz because 1/2 the school or more is taking part. Please believe me, I’m not having a go at anyone, but it’s surprising to see the lack of participation. There is a brilliant sentiment on the Glenwood Rugby page … with that drive behind the sport, you always hope for the best.

“Rugby at Glenwood is the major sporting code. It is a sport that instils values such as integrity, sportsmanship, loyalty, discipline and hard work. Glenwood’s policy of participation in extra mural activities as well as the passion shown by the boys enables almost five hundred youngsters the opportunity of experiencing the ultimate team sport.

Glenwood fields thirty teams on a regular basis. This allows boys from all levels and ability to be part of this wonderful game. The sports department endeavours’ to provide games for all teams, this has allowed Glenwood to embark on tours out the province to play fixtures against some major rugby playing schools in South Africa such as Affies from Pretoria and Grey College from Bloemfontein.

The player base at other schools is diminishing at an alarming rate. Schools, educators and parents owe it to our children to provide them with an environment that will foster a healthy life style and the opportunity to experience a real childhood. Perhaps instead of instilling a win at all cost attitude we should rather emphasise the fun part of playing rugby.

At Glenwood we encourage full participation respective of ability; hence the U14M Team is just as important as the 1st XV.”

So dig deep Rhino’s .. ons weet jul kan opstaan en BAIE sterk eindig!!! just do it again……….

@Grasshopper: Hopefully not. In my experience, the fixtures the boys enjoy the most are those that a full and competitive. The buzz around the College fixtures at Kearsney, WV & PBHS was far more exciting and animated than for instance vs DHS where the A teams were getting a good going over – but the rest of the teams (and hockey) were pretty one way. Even the U14F team vs KES had a whole bunch of people cheering and more spectators than I’ve seen some B teams get on other days.

If last week’s results are anything to go by…St Andrews are going to get a cricket score from Grey at Lower.
It will be interesting to see how QC do against a Hudson Park that hasn’t been bad at all this year.I expect them to win at The Rec, but not to run away with it.

    My EC predictions:
    QC by 10 or less
    Grey PE by 40 plus

Is injury/attrition that bad? Sad for the Reunion day to miss out – as that was always the highlight of the year to play in.

@Grasshopper: Boet, what’s up with the U14’s. Your reunion day, 4 teams. I think I count only 21 rugby matches and 12 hockey.

Will Westville be looking for fillers?

@Roger: St Alban’s has had between 9 and 12 injuries the whole season – even the captain and vice captain were out against Jeppe on Saturday. The entire pack that completed the game was made up of grade 11’s. With only four open teams, St Alban’s are much more severely impacted by injuries than a macro school like KES.

That said, if St Alban’s can put up as gutsy a display as they did against Jeppe, your boys will have their hands full.

whew – bit of a break for KES (with due respect to St Albans and Vleis) – at last count 12 players out injured (thanks Affies!) – all bar two were taken out in the first half of the Affies game

@Lindenpa: Great for the boys to play on Ellis Park -but I trust the sense of occasion is not lost for the 2 sets of school supporters.

good luck to Linden (my old home suburb) – seems like they are having a great season.

I can’t think of a bigger game in KZN this year. HC/MHS or any of the MC clashes (apart from the return MC/GW clash on a school field  ) could come close

Bastion v Linden to be played at Ellispark on Saturday. Game starts at 15h00 and is a curtain raiser for the Lions v Waratahs.
