Was a little distracted with work and an injury yesterday. But a few comments on the U16 trials.

    > A few of the boys shone – my two stars who really put their hands up were Holder and Mjara (both centres)
    > Scrums seemed to be a problem – with the McClaren scrum being pushed off the ball or loosing tight head sa few times.
    > injuries were again present with Lombard, Little and Richardson all being sidelined and not finishing (or starting) the trials.
    > The heat played a role – but a lot of the guys were looking sluggish (fitness was something highlighted by the selectors in the debrief) – and a good few coughs among the boys with that season changing cold/flu season.

sorry – very cryptic and brief – but there was enough on offer that a good 30 of the boys played well enough to make the “A” team – the selectors I’m sure will be happy enough with whatever combinations they use.

A “B” team will also be selected for a home game against Pumas “B”. 4 of the “B” team will also attend practices in case of injury/withdrawal.

@Tarpeys: There should be at least one selector from each tier 1 school, then a program to make sure that selectors get to see matches from all the usual feeder schools should these schools not play against tier 1 schools. Not pretending that I know all the answers, but when you get glaring omissions like Kershaw questions must be asked, but won’t until the coach that knows him well is there to state his case. I don’t agree with your “when it matters most …” comment, GK matters to these kids.

Michaelhouse players for some reason seem to be ignored by the selectors at this level. I think Hilton tend to have a get more players into this side. I think of De Beer, Blewet and Dahl in recent memory.

Judging from the seven they’ve got in the final trial, probably one or two of them might make it into the side this year. Whether there’s bias or not one can’t say, but the fact that Michaelhouse don’t have selector there and Hilton has one must be noted.

But, as usual, Michaelhouse players will come through where it matters most- at craven level.

    7 (+1?) to Final trials

So that is 17 (for arguments sake from the A & B teams in 2012.

so quite a fall out rate to the “top” 60 (63) boys in 2015 in the same age group.

A few of the others made the Main trials but are not back (the likes of Kershaw, Allan, Taljaard etc.).

Have I gone mad, or are there no House players in here. How’s that possible when you can be sure that their first side will be competitive in 4 years time?

The numbers are comparable for the big 4 schools, and kind of representative for Hilton but I worry about KC and gobsmacked by House. Small discrepancies are more explanable. I am not knowledgable enough to do it, but it’s possible the good players get eliminated from one team because of two exceptional players from a smaller school where that might be their only really good player (the 2 number 12’s from smaller schools for instance).

I’m always disappointed at selections, let’s see how the final ones go, but it’s guaranteed that there are deserving kids left out, Kershaw being an obvious one

@Thumper: I also thought about the College / DHS numbers. My only thought is that the College depth is so much better and there has been a fair rotation in the College A side with a good few players moving up and down.

But agreed – the DHS U16A team is very good. In this case I don’t think anyone is looking at GW as being over represented either.

@Rugger fan: Nick Kershaw from MHS should definitely have gone through. Last year there wasn’t 1 private school player selected to GK. The system is a joke! Kershaw can play 8 or 12!! How can College have more reps than DHS?

Very happy for the Hillcrest prop getting a run – he’s worked hard and is this perhaps the start of the “Christy Noble era” at Hillcrest?

Interesting to see no MHS players? Have not seen them play this year so can not comment.
