So, did Grey win?
@Ploegskaar: Hi Ploegskaar.I am not against the idea of sponsorship.I know firsthand what the costs involved are and am thankful.By all means have the sponsors logo on your jersey etc but to be officially refered to by the sponsors name is something that I find strange.
@OudUppie: Dankie.
@Andre: Unfortunately I don’t know the people numbers for Sannies, but they rank behind Sentraal, Jim Fouche and Fichardtpark in strength in rugby terms. I would say that they are in the same league as Aliwal North.
@Andre: The link is on the FB page for GCB, if you are interested. Not sure the numbers at Santies, but Morne Steyn is their pride and joy. (Im not in Bloem)
If I may ask: What are the pupil numbers at Sand du Plessis?
Thank you.
@Andre: These are just the fixtures on the A field. There are many more matches taking place, on several fields. Hangklip is playing Sand Du Plessis at 09:10 on the “B” field.
Hangklip is going up to Fichhardt Park this week-end, don’t see them on the fixture list though?
@Ploegskaar – You are 100% correct. No matter how much I stand on a soap box and put my point of view forward, the horse has bolted.
Sponsors logos on school boy rugby jerseys are here to stay. As much as I don’t like it, I have to accept it.
If it hadn’t been for sponsors, the school fees would have been a lot higher. So the parents of the schools are grateful!!
@Veg: Hi Veg. A formal request was made by a Noord-Kaap official to have their name displayed as Kynoch Noord-Kaap. It’s not something I would normally go out of my way to change but I did receive good assistance from the official, so it has to work both ways.
I also noticed that for their sports day pamphlet the hosts go by the name Central Nissan Fichardtpark.
@Tang: The 1st XV may look more professional, but it certainly does not make the school professional. The school only benefits from the kit, the sponsor only from the logo on the kit and the R60000 saving for the school will most probably go towards subsidizing the fees of the 20% non-paying learners at most government/model-C schools, or a Governing Body Appointed teacher’s salary.
The survival of government/model-C schools largely depend on contributions from sponsors, as funding from the DoE is less than inadequate, so let’s accept that the little logo is here to stay, and move on.
@Ploegskaar- Fully understand the cost of the kit. So you are saying that in exchange for providing kit for the school, it is acceptable for the sponsor to have a logo on the school jersey.
Surely if you accept money for kit, it is payment and makes the school professional.
It is expressly forbidden in US school sports for that exact reason.
Was involved with Harlequins youth rugby. u/10 jerseys, R6500 for 23 jersey set!
On the subject of sponsorship, does anyone have an idea what it costs to kit a school 1st XV squad with home and away jerseys, home and away shorts, socks, tracksuits, tog bags, warm-up shirts and walk-out shirts?
Well, from experience it sets you back a minimum of R60000 per year, just for the mentioned kit and excluding tour and travel expenses. In return for little more than a discreet logo placement and a few banners next to the field at home games, I feel that it is a very generous advertising investment, and even more so as it would otherwise have to be financed from school fees.
Good on those schools that can fund these from their R180k+/year school fees and only wear a big old ugly family crest on the chest (some oddly with no money for numbers on the back), but back on earth, real schools can only survive because of sponsors.
@Kosie – I hope that is not the case. School Boy rugby is an amateur sport. Large sponsorships drive the sport to professionalism and should be resisted at all cost.
I hope PBHS never sell their jersey and the schools name to a sponsor. I am sure the majority of Boys High parents would agree with me.
Boys play for the school not for a sponsor.
@Veg: Most schools have a major sponsor that they displayed on the first team jersey. I think it’s just a matter of time before sponsors names will be added to schools team names. We will fight the change but ultimately money will have the last say.
If the money a sponsor is willing to pay is enough, few schools will resist the temptation to incorporate the sponsors name in the title of their first team. The next step is the name of the ground.
Beet surely Noord-Kaap aren’t officially known as Kynoch Noord Kaap.
Well done to the organisors to get the group of schools together! Seems some thought went into the program
