Pretoria Gears Up: Bere vs Witbulle – Volume 4
In next to no time, the derby between Affies and Garsfontein has become one of the most anticipated events on the schoolboy rugby calendar. This year marks the fourth edition of the post-Covid clash, and judging by recent history, it’s set to be another thriller.
The last three encounters have been absolute nail-biters:
2022: Garsfontein 20 – 19 Affies
2023: Garsfontein 45 – 38 Affies
2024: Garsfontein 31 – 33 Affies
The 2025 showdown promises more of the same fireworks.
Affies are in the thick of a brutal fixture list this season, seemingly involved in a high-stakes clash every weekend. And it’s no surprise – they’ve built one of the most formidable 1st XVs in the country. Their pack is a force, with a perfectly balanced back row of Lohan Potgieter, Albert Smit, and Stefan McDonald, combining power, work rate, and breakdown brilliance. At flyhalf, Ruben Groenewald pulls the strings with style and composure, orchestrating play with maturity beyond his years.
However, Affies will now have to continue their campaign without one of their standout performers. Albert Smit has unfortunately been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury — a major blow considering his physical presence and leadership in the loose trio.
In his absence, the responsibility falls to Elwin Janse van Rensburg and Martin van Niekerk, both of whom will be stepping into big shoes. The coaching staff will be hoping the duo can rise to the occasion and bring the same intensity and composure that Smit delivered so consistently.
Garsies, meanwhile, have made a strong start to their campaign but will be at a newly renovated Die Plaas for this one. They’ll take the field as underdogs – and they’ll love it. As always, they bring flair out wide, with the electrifying two Junaides – Passensie and Stuart amongst the players lighting up the backline.
But the heartbeat of this Garsies team might just be in the engine room. In a schoolboy landscape where props often get recognition for flashy carries or soft hands – partly because of scrum restrictions – it’s refreshing to see a proper set-piece monster take centre stage. Luan van den Berg, their tighthead prop, has earned his stripes as the top scrummager in the country. He’s not just an anchor; he’s an inspiration. His dominance in the scrum and his work ethic make him a massive presence for Garsfontein.…
