There are definitely positives around the rugby programme. I’m pleased to see the youngsters being more competitive and believing they can win tough fixtures.

There are a few important points. The u15 A side have bounced back from a few close losses at the Francois Swart festival. The u16 A group remind me of years gone by. They may not have produced wonderful results as u14’s and u15’s but they are going from strength to strength. The u14 a team of 2025 have produced some outstanding displays. Earlier in the year I referred to the fist team as Jekyll and Hyde. I can see now that it’s more about a deep seated belief they can beat opponents. The coaches have done a stellar job bringing them together but sometimes they don’t believe they are entitled to win a close match.

I guess maybe I spoke after seeing the 5th team and 14 C scores which drove me to chase happiness juice in Hatfield ….. But during the u14 a game could not help but marvel at the rugby talent in that PTA Boys team I mean apparently there are kids in that team who did not take up full scholarship offers to attend other schools and opted to go pay full school fees at Boys high …. I might be wrong but with 8 full hostels and over 500 boarders I think boys high should be a force into the forceable future …. Also if this streak of kids turning down bursaries to go be full fee paying students PTA Boys High in this Ramaphosa economy I think Boys high are in a fortunate spot 🫣 and that is super scary for all

That may be a little dramatic – Jeppe weren’t smashed. It was a fabulous day of competitive matches and most games were very close. The only exception may be the u14 C fixture. Jeppe were dominant in the open age group 1st, 2nd and 3rd went to Jeppe. The u16 age group was very close with the exception of the u16 D fixture. If anything, Jeppe smashed PBHS at Hockey. Jeppe were superb at first team, u16 A and u14 A in the hockey. In terms of rugby, the three most outstanding matches of the day were the first team match s well asthe u16 A and u15 A matches. In the first team rugby match, Boys High had a shot at posts to win the match, with time up on the clock. I now know how Jeppe felt at the end of the 2013 match. I am so pleased to see the depth returning to PBHS rugby!

And, it’s worth mentioning, it’s very rare that these schools win games against the big boys outside of the A-sides, or if the other sides are “playing up”. Against SACS, e.g., PRG won all 20 games, scoring 819 points and conceding only 97 (average score 41-5). Against Bishops it was 16 from 16, scoring 945 points and conceding 76 (average score 59-5). Against Bishops all sides below B-sides also “played up”. Bosch and Berg should be sterner tests, but the gap really is noticeable.

The gap is significant if it is measured over all games played. On average about 18 games are played over the day with the southern suburb school often winning between 0 to 3 games maximum. At first team level outstanding coaching at schools such as Wynberg and Rondebosch becomes a great leveler.

I hear you! Yes! True! Wynberg ran Boishaai close not so long ago!
However! On most occasions, the really top schools still manage to win these matches, even though they were not at their very best, against opponents that are more than useful. Of course there is a number is schools that fields really good sides!
However! It is the consistently high performance, under all conditions, which opens the gap between the cream at the top, versus the rest.

The top 5 schools (Gim, Boishaai, Affies, Grey and Paul Roos), may occasionally loose the odd game against other schools, but their losses comes mostly from matches against each other.

    Brackenfell 19- Parel Vallei 12!
Good, hard competitive match between two of the better. WP Premier league A2 schools.
Parel Valleie and Milnerton have in recent years, made huge strides to improve their rugby.
Brackenfell has also upped their game, to once again count amongst the top schools in this competitive league, where Durbanville is the current pace setters! Strand is also still a force, which ensures that the quality of rugby stays high!

    MY TRAUMA AT BOYS HIGH

I don’t hate PTA Boys High but in all honestly the most traumatic events in my SBR life happenned there actually everything about that school makes me break out in hives from our u14a team losing 114 nil when I was in grade 11 to Chilliboy throwing to the fullback in the line out when I was in Matric .. during those years it was a given that we would be thumped against them … I won’t even mention how they used to like to call us jail birds ….. tomorrow the boys have an opportunity to make it 11 in a row a record for us I think…. but a real statement would be if we stole all the A team games …… So tomorrow we trek across the Jukskie borderline for some much needed therapy

It can really go either way with Landbou. One week they are great, the next week they look decidedly average. Even in the game against PRG, there was the Landbou of the first 50 minutes and the Landbou of the last 20 minutes. Two different teams. I think HJS’ pack should have too much for them in the rain, but a few of Landbou’s big boys may have something to prove after dropping out of WP reckoning.

Sterkte aan Boishaai vir die naweek se wedstryde teen Boland Landbou.
Mag daar geen ernstige beserings wees nie en mag die span wat die beste swem as oorwinnaars uit die stryd tree.

O my word Snelvuur. I am so worried about Saturday as Boland Landbou will come firing and they were very , very unfortunate to loose against Paul Roos and frankly should have closed that game down with 10 minutes to go. Landbou always plays at 1000% higher than usual against Boishaai and can easily win. They have one of the most brilliant tactical minds in schoolboy rugby as their Director of Coaching in Christoff Lötter which will prepare them so well. They have a big and strong pack , a great backline and will be very dangerous . It can really be a banana skin for us.
And not forgetting they have the support of the legendary Ploegskaar !

    LIONS TEAMS OUT

The Lions CW, AW, Welpies and GK teams are out. The CW team comprises players from the following schools:
    1. Helpies – 7
    2. Jeppe – 6
    3. Norries – 6
    4. KES – 3
    5. Monnas – 1

    WESTERN CAPE FIXTURES

Few really interesting match-ups in the WC this week:
    Oakdale’s pack will roll Outeniqua
    SACS should get past Bellville
Landbou will either give HJS a real run for their money or get completely blown away – it’s so hard to tell with this Landbou side
Bosch-Berg should be tight – Bosch maybe edging it
Gim could put up 70 against Bishops: Piley-ing on the pain in the rain
Paul Roos ran away with it against Stellenberg at the Newlands rugby day earlier this year, but I expect it to be tighter this time around. Still think PRG takes it though. Excited to see Van Biljon vs Pheiffer.
Milnerton and Durbanville had a very interesting game at the Newlands rugby day – Milnerton tore Durbies to shreds at the start, but Durbies muscled their way back into it and lost narrowly in the end. Should be a great tussle. In the rain, Durbies might edge it?
PV could make a real statement against Brackenfell…
