Border powerhouses Queen’s College & Selborne name their teams

Here is the first look at what the Border big guns Queen’s College of Queenstown and Selborne from East London have to offer this season. Both schools will be in action at this Saturday’s Border Schools Rugby Day

For Queen’s keep an eye out for wing Jerry Danquah this season. Hooker Uhuru Vanda and centre Avela Jubase are also expected to make telling contributions. For Selborne flyhalf Morgan Steyn is hot property. No.8 Jason Steyn has Craven Week experience and is expected to be the standout forward.

Queen’s has dominated the Hirsch Shield, winning the Eastern Cape’s premier school athletics event for 12 years in a row, so it comes as no rugby surprise that they still have athletes out who are going to the Eastern Cape Athletics Championships. Some may even progress to the SA Championships beyond that, so they do have players on this list below who won’t be playing in the up and coming Border Schools Day on Saturday, 15 March and perhaps one or two who won’t play in the first game against Michaelhouse at the Grey PE Festival on 29 March.

# QUEEN’S SELBORNE
1 Siyavuya Mlwayo 1 Sky Bawden
2 Uhuru Vanda (c.) 2 Grant Venter
3 Simpiwe Matanzima 3 Tango Balikile
4 Bonke Matikinca 4 Greg Shean

7 Alan-Graham Rautenbach 7 Lutho Salem
8 Dancan Mureguzi 8 Jason Steyn
9 Raegan Oranje 9 Ryan Boy
10 Lee-Roy Kuyler 10 Morgan Steyn
11 Jerry Danquah 11 Milani Lubelwana
12 Juan du Rant 12 David Brits
16 Avela Jubase (vice-captain) 13 Jacinta Da Silva
14 Sikhokele Ngozi 14 Tristian Coetzee
15 Olwethu Foslag 15 Liam McLoughlin
17 Sokhana Matanda 16 C van Tonder
18 Dale Vensky 17 Heinrich Niewenhuizen
19 Kevin Ngcofo 18 S Dunjana
20 Johan van Heerden 19 Brandon Perks
21 Mvuyo Tshefuta 20 P Makalima

23 Yawe Penxa

Please note that no Queen’s College player wears the “unlucky” no.13 jersey

@QC86: Sorry, missed the u/15’s playing at the Kwagga Week, I see they are up against Diamandveld on the 1st day.

You can gladly send some of those u/16 boys down this way though, according to Warren many are farmers’ sons anyway, they can study a bit, wrestle with the cattle and of course play lots of rugby without a competing winter sport, all in the pristine setting of beautiful Agter-Paarl!

@Ploegskaar: All our junior sides were invited to wk but it was turned down by the school, will interfere with there afternoon naps.u15’s will be at kwagga and one game at Graeme day and the u16 are playing at Grens on Saturday and also Graeme day on the 21’st,sadly because with a team like the u16’s have we should tour the country.

@QC86: Pity, so assume the u/16’s are not playing anywhere then. As u/15’s they were really an impressive group by all accounts and the u/14’s from 2013 were not half bad either.

I am sure we will have time to discuss this matter at length at the Cape Schools Week in PE next year (Grey PE hosting), preferably over some long ales.

@Ploegskaar: hey ploeg baby steps boet,it took us parents and old boys about 10 years to get our old age home to agree to send our first team to a festival,we now classify ourselves an academic school sic.Rugby not important, but it is the only time that we have about 4 or 5 thousand people,i call them potential customers ,on our school grounds on derby days, but hey what do we as parents know.We get told that we have a waiting list of kids wanting to get into Selborne but what they don’t tell you is that they are non paying criminals, old boys and good quality families are sending their kids else where  so slowly mate

@QC86: I see Boland and Selborne will rejoin battle at the Kwagga Week with the u14’s playing on the first day. I know your 1sts are playing a couple of weaker sides at the Pansy Festival, and are then off to KERF and WK, but find it strange that your u15’s and u/16’s are not attending the PBH u/15 and PG u/16 tournaments. Going on last year, your u/16’s should be one of the stronger outfits in SA, where are they playing?

QC86 must be a proud father. Well done to Grant on commanding a starting post in Selborne’s 1st XV.

@GCollege86: Looks like a young and inexperienced team. Selborne has never struggled with depth though, they are not to be underestimated. I do hope that they lose at least 2 games this season though
