Glenwood takes on Kirkham Grammar (UK)

Glenwood supporters with weekend plans that did not involve attending rugby at Dixons field this Saturday the 21st of July, might just have to reconsider.

The reason being, Glenwood 1st XV are taking on English touring school Kirkham Grammar in what should be a really good match-up.  Kirkham are from an area just outside Preston (North of Liverpool and Manchester). Their tour seemed fairly low key affair until they registered a 29-28 win against SACS in Cape Town a few days ago. In most seasons a win against the Western Province Premier League strugglers probably would not mean that much but this year the oldest school in South Africa has a very good side. As a result the victory by Kirkham adds a considerable amount of weight to the challenge they should pose to Glenwood, making the game definitely worthwhile to attend.

Other Glenwood age-group teams will also be in action against the Durban Development at the same venue in the lead up to the main game.

@Star – if I was swearing under my breath then yes, it was me :-P That was one of my most frustrating days (only DHS was worst with those damn advertising things on the floor)

@NW_Knight I’m getting so bad that when I watch rugby on TV I want to pick up my camera and take pics. I will be at all the Club games and also at the tournament, taking photos as usual for the same price as for the school. Last year I did a package deal for the IPT tournament – all the photos for the week – this year I will be charging R200 and I will try get the photos of the capping ceremony too.

    Glenwood – Kirkam games

Glenwood won all their matches against Kirkam by large margins

The 1st game was a real clanger Kirkam had big forwards – like having 3 Marnes in the their pack and they mostly out muscled Glenwood in set pieces – their backline was weak and Gwd back line scored most of their tries because of this – 5 tries I think – I got the impression that the visitors thought GWD would be a walkover judging by comments on their blog site – IE ” We cant wait to get to Durban” & Durban here we come ! This was probably as a result of their win over SACS – Glenwood won 32 -5

Lots of pushing and shoving & some punching from both sides – a very entertaining game I would rate them on a par with DHS

I tried to chat with some of the Kirkam lads in the stands with 15 Min to go but I found them unfriendly, and petulant
On the whole an enjoyable afternoon – I took videos and will post some of them when I hoe to do this

Ha ha – and on the way back :?: :?:
I’m saving my travelling money for IPT – 5 age groups, each playing a number of games, I think it will be awesome this year.

@CyndiAtRugby: It was Grey Bloem. I don’t blame the parents for being nervous and wanting the extra smoke break stops.

I will be taking photos but just have to figure out which teams – obviously all the Kirkham teams but the rest of the day will be interesting.

It was an interesting team that was practicing with very few changes from what I could see. A lot of the 1st team guys have trimmed, firmed, etc and are looking really good.

The bus was advertised in the newsletter on break up day. R600 per person and only 34 could go. Many people weren’t interested because last year the bus stopped for too many smoke breaks
I will send your comments to the marketing team – hopefully it will help.

@Greenhopper, in fact I am very disappointed with Glenwood’s web/digital marketing. They have a twitter account but don’t use it and the website is very basic. There should be video clips, tweet deck, likes, team sheets, player profiles, list of previous SA and KZN reps etc etc. KES are a good example of how to market and promote your school online. They bang on all day about Old Boys etc, also they could make some money out of online ads, proper banners etc not just static logo’s and pdf’s…..I know it costs money but you can do alot without money eg maintain an active twitter account…

@Cyndi, that is a pity! I wonder why the bus was cancelled. Anyway, good luck to the boys this weekend. Are you going to be taking pics? Does anyone know the team selected? Is it a full strength 1st team or a ‘stayers’ side?

Photos of the game should be posted on Cyndi At Rugby Etc Photography on Facebook on Sunday. From what I hear, there is a 1st XV and U15 game against Kirkham. Should be good, let’s hope it ends on a bettr note than the USA rugby team last year.

Thanks Greenblooded for the link :-P

@Griffon: Sorry Griffon. I have no idea. The team was meant to be made public after an initial delay.

@Beet, Kirkham are ranked 85th not 217th, that is Bradford Grammar who Westville are playing…..so they are about as strong as George Campbell, Northwood and DHS. Bradford are probably as strong as maybe Voortrekker or Pinetown

@Greenhopper: Should be good but Kirkham seem to be ranked a bit low in the UK if they are only #217 and they put away SACS who are probably Top 30 in SA. Unless SACS were unstrength for the match.

Brilliant, this will be a very good test before the ‘great trek’ up to Affies next weekend. I am aware Affies won’t have their SA HP squad in their team, but any Affies team is still strong and there is the altitude and travel factor. Affies 2nd’s are like Grey Cherries, sometimes as good as any other 1st team. With regards to Kirkham, it will be interesting to see how they play fresh and a ready for their season ahead. Looking at pics of the SACS game they seem to have some biggish forwards so the battle could be upfront. I only hope that the Glenwood boys that did not take part in Craven Week, Academy Week and GK Week have kept up the fitness in the holidays, so Marne, Worral-Claire, Mazibuko, Heino etc. Good luck boys, it’s going to be a tough 4 weeks ahead…..Kirkham, Affies, College and Grey Bloem! Let’s end the season on a high. Go Green!
