@Toffee: I was in the north west stand on the corner with the singing group !
I am one of those who was proved wrong by Stewart. The man has a heart of steel. Even though I saw glimpses of talent for the first time in the game against UJ, he made me eat some humble pie this last Monday. McDonald and Kilroe were outstanding at lock. McDonald with ball in hand is a nightmare for any opposition. I agree on Jones-Davies…he looks deceiving, and has some Christian Cullen tendencies which make him dangerous on the counter.
Wits haven’t won a single game this year. They will go into next week’s game as underdogs with nothing to lose – dangerous. They have also been playing in the rain for the last 3 weeks (here’s to hoping the weather clears soon in JHB), so they’ll be more accustomed to the conditions than the Ikeys. They’ve improved during the competition, where they started with some serious hidings to having some close losses. UCT will do well not to underestimate these guys, and also not put pressure on themselves, which often results in fatal unforced errors. I’d rather they go into this game looking at it as just another VC game, and not a ticket to a home semi.
@tzavosky: Unfortunately it is commercially successful and therefore all is well.
@Tjoppa: Really sad to hear. As it is, koshuise are under enormous political pressure to change their long standing traditions and customs, they don’t need interference in the beautiful tradition of koshuisrugby as well.
I think they should take a collective stand and refuse to play in the VC in future, no matter who wins the league. Maybe all of us with contacts should whisper in receptive ears?
Playa, I also went to the Ikeys game yesterday and was surprised at the ease of the win against Shimlas, particularly the first half dominance. Richard Stewart (ex Bishops I believe) on the wing is very underrated and I would like to see him get a chance with higher honours. Ross Jones-Davies at fullback is another exciting talent, who should go far. Digby Webb at prop is improving with every game and I believe when he was at school at SACS did not play prop. I was worried when I heard young Jan Uys at lock had been called up to WP but the locks did well on the night. A home semi-final is a strong possibility but one cannot take the WIts game forgranted.
Taaibos…..
Julle weet mos….

GO IKEYS!!! What a performance by the boys last night. A win against Wits next week, and we have a home semi…then we do it again on he Green Mile in 2 weeks’ time.
…but looking at the log…a surprise loss against Wits, could see us out of the competition.
Ah U Ah U Ah UCT!!!
@tzavosky: Heard the same is happening this year at Onderstepoort.
@BOG: See Boggie “WISE” in capital letters. Go TUKS
@Tjoppa: Is that a riddle?
@BOG: Bog the difference is I know it and accept it, you also know it but does not want to accept it and then act like one by denying it.
@Tjoppa: What a morning? We agree on something- that you are an old fart! Just not sure about the “wise” part.
@All Black: Not a shambles but a true modern tragedy. And this is going to happen to schoolboy rugby too. I am not a wise old man rather a wise old fart. But may my words not become true.
@Tjoppa: I have it on very good authority that the Taaibos team will beat any of the Tuks teams not playing in the Varsity Cup. I know of many players refusing to play for Tuks teams and have gone to other clubs or are playing in the Koshuis league. It is a shambles.
The top junior teams are Tukkies, Maties Pukke, Kovsies and UJ. Last year the Ikeys beat UJ to be in the semi’s, but they seem to be struggling this year.
@tzavosky: It is no joke but in Pretoria it is a known fact that the TUKS players call the other players by number BECAUSE they do not know his name.
WAKE UP FNB YOU ARE KILLING VARSITY RUGBY AS WE KNEW IT.
What a mess? Not unlike the social environment. Weep, the beloved country.
@Tjoppa: Tjoppa, this goes right down to the bottom. Last year Mopanie represented Tuks in the koshuis section. They had trials and picked their squad of 25.
This is the story I was told reliably:
The week before their 1st fixture against Medies of Stellenbosch 10 guys arrived ” from above” with instructions that they should be included. There was also nothing the coach could do.
Amongst those 10 three were flyhalves and all had to play, so one FH ended up on the wing. His opponent ran around him 3 times to score, as he had no idea of defence on the wing. Mopanie lost 28-24.
We all know koshuis rugby thrives on friendship, relationships and cameraderie, but all of that was lost in the process. The imports even had the audacity to ask where they could get Mopanie gear like t-shirts and tracksuits.
Tuks’ registrar had the nerve to send alumni an e-mail last year to explain that they were not at fault when they were find out of fielding players that did not qualify. I asked him politely to make public the registration information of VC players, as it is not privileged information and he is in the best position to do so.
Silence till this day. I agree with you!
@tredoux@fsrugby.co.za…so with the three strong varsity sides in one pool, and only really one in the other pool being maties, do you think (a) they boys should play all the other teams to determine semi finalists and (b) who do you see playing in the final this year?
@tredoux@fsrugby.co.za: Or to call it an academy or not?
UFS Kovsie u19 beat Tuks u19 (academy) 81 -7. But there were no contracted Bulls u19’s in the Tuks side.
The question is to academy or not ?
@BuffelsCM: Buffels yes but must also admit that the players in the academy is paid by the parents and does not form part of the Bulls structures. On previous occasions the Bulls denied any participation in this academy. The question was asked then and now why then attach your name to a structure you see as sub standard and where you deny involvement? We live in a strange strange world.
28 24
The Tuks vs Kovsie YGuns game was a cracker. Tukkies scored three drivingmaul tries and one awesome backline try. Kovsies replyed with three tries with theire backs. Mkhabela, R Potgieter and Pieter Jordaan.
It was 26 24 with 2 min. left and Kovsies missed a penalty.
On the stroke of fulltime Marais converted a kick from 54m to make the final score 28 26.
The young guns compitition see’s three strong sides in Tuks, Pukke & Kovsies in one pool. Shame Wits conceding three centuries making up the fourth side.
@Tjoppa: That is quite disturbing Tjoppa.
There was a letter in Sunday’s Rapport in which a parent has said that there are 60 students in the Rugby Academy at Tuks (which is supported by the Bulls) but it’s only the same 23 that get game time in the Varsity Cup.
He asked the question: what happens to the rest of the 60 ? – I guess you have explained why they don’t get game time
I WITNESSED THE DEATH OF VARSITY RUGBY AS WE KNOW IT.
Varsity Cup had the best intentions when it started BUT unfortunately this is what was created. I witnessed TUKS 3 vs Police 2nds on Friday and was totally shocked. To put this in perspective Tuks 3 will be Fezelas or Tuks 2 when the Carlton Cup in Pretoria start. The talent and coaching, or let us put it this way the lack thereof, was very visible. It was the worst rugby I saw in years.
I enquired how TUKS second stringers became so bad. Then the story:
a) The normal students decline to play for TUKS teams as the have no chance in hell making any team on merit, one boy joked and said Taaibos will klap the team playing by 30 points.
b) The day before the match, Thursday, the Bulls send down seven new players that needed match time and the normally 1st, Carlton Cup, players was demoted to the 3rd team.
c) On voicing their disapproval they were told, by the coaches, that they, coaches, have no say. Either they listen or get dismissed. This resulted on Tuks 1 breaking BOKSMART rules by not having a reserve hooker and tight head prop on the bench as all the Bulls players was to get game time.
d) Police are playing with 4 TUKS 1 players of 2013 season. Eagles with 6 and four stopped playing. Of the players summarily dropped to the 3rd team four is leaving the club. Not confirmed.
d) Pote Human has also voiced his disapproval of the system as he also is only a pawn for the Bulls. He is not allowed to pick his best players nor play the game plan he wishes to.
THEREFORE DUISER, FRANCOIS AND KIE I BELIEVE YOUR INTENTIONS WAS GOOD BUT YOU ARE KILLING VARSITY RUGBY.
@valke: Try the Young Guns drop-menu on the Varsity Cup site (varsitycup.co.za). Some of the match reports show the team sheets.
Any idea where I can find the team sheets for the Young Guns teams ?
@ all – did anyone attend the tuks/ Shimla young guns game…would be interesting to hear some thoughts on the game and players
@Tjoppa:
@Playa: If my Xhosa is not that rusted if translated means. Bog is in a urgent need to dump his i-shiti but that hemorrhoids is making it to painful.
@BOG: Hahahahaha!Well tried. Took me some time to get what you were saying
@Andre T: @Speartackle: @Tjoppa: @<a href="#comment-Au, yonke wena, mfene. Mteta i-shiti @Playa: Excuse the spelling
@Tjoppa: Just added it onto my list…thanks
@Playa: Are you going to visit “De Wallatjes”. Het is een must
@Speartackle: Please allow us old farts some day dreaming. It is all that is keeping us going. And Beet thank you for allowing us to write it down because our memories does not last as long as our breakfast.
@Tjoppa: I am one of those who can ‘do’ but cannot teach. I will do my best to translate as far as possible. I am due a trip to the Netherlands in July, so in return, I will need some Afrikaans lessons. Apparently there is nothing sexier than an African that speaks ‘broken Dutch’ in that part of the world.
@Andre T: I prefer my female Russians around a pole without saying a word.
@ Beet: Please step in and bring some order here. It seems as though alcohol, politics and cheap women are more important here to some bloggers than rugby. Bog, Tjoppa and Andre T seem to be the main culprits here. Please address the problem
@Andre T: Don’t forget to mention her mom is half Portuegese half Mongolian
@Tjoppa: Remember, Svetlana is half Russian half Viet Cong but is fluent in afrikaans. She looks like a modern day Pamela Ewing with Karen Muir shoulders, Jennifer Arniston legs and Bette Davis eyes. She’s also blessed with Shakira’s rhythm and Debbie does Dallas hunger.
Boys, please don’t confuse Sochi with Queenstown
@Andre T: That sounds even more foreign. Will you teach us please. Then Beet can claim to run the first educational rugby blog. A first.
@BOG: Vodka freezes just at a lower temperature as our household fridges are capable of. I tried to make ice cubes with vodka in for a school party but had to use an industrial freezer that was capable of temperatures of -40C. What a party.
@Playa: Tell me if you need any female Russian speaking ones
@Playa: I would welcome them with open arms. On one condition they must teach us Xhosa. I always wanted to speak foreign and must admit the khakie’s language is just well let us just say, not too foreign for my taste. I say African languages for Africans. Viva.
@Queenian: Hahaha!Thats my starting point
@Playa: Ye there plenty from Dale and Queens we need them on this blog
I had more fun rocking my son to sleep than I did watching the Tuks-Shimlas game. UCT vs NMMU would have been a better watch…maybe even the Varsity shield game that was on at the same time.
Well…off I go to recruit some Xhosa speaking people to join the blog
@Andre T: Geluk met jou span se loesing Mnr T.
Jo daai ysskaats is darem vir jou ‘n mooi sport hoor. Daai meisies se bene is sooooooooo lank.
@Andre T: Teer onderwerp daardie toe ek haar laas vrae het sy my ‘n helse klap gegee.
Wonder wanneer gaan Wolraad my gelukwens met sy FA Cup oorwinning
@Tjoppa: Poke Shirley?
@Andre T: Drank gevries.
As ek wil loer stap ek maar nader en vergaap my.
Die hele aand was ‘n nagmerrie. My laaste Varsity Cup.
@Andre T: More Meneer lyk my ons het dieselfde gemors verduur. Hoe gaan dit met die Rus.
Yaaaaaawwwwwnnnn. This happens when the professionals take over Varsity Cup. If this continues the end is in sight. How on earth could they pick a man of the match in such a boring game. Tuks is niks and Shimlas even less.
They claim Rugby that rocks
I fell asleep 4 times during Tuks/Kovsies
The commentators didn’t know it wasn’t Rudolph Botha on the loosehead for Kovsies
Carlo Engelbrecht must find a new hairdresser
Gouws Prinsloo kakked out the wing
Dries Swanepoel looks good in pink
Is that Tiaan Schoeman’s natural hair colour or should he join Engelbrecht at the barber?
Students drinking beer while national anthem being played
Pukke gets cut down to size
Strange how many ‘former schoolboy prodigees’ will find Varsity Cup their highest playing fields
Must say my bed rocked more than the rugby
