Pretoria co-ed high school Waterkloof are being frowned upon today after they withdrew only their 1st XV, u16A and 3rd XV teams from the Noordvaal Cup commitments against Monument of Krugersdorp. Other rugby matches between the schools are set to go ahead.
Although the Klofies cited Covid-19 positive cases as their reason, which was apparently accepted by the Noordvaal organising committee, who in turn have postponed the fixture until June, the unhappy feeling in the province’s school rugby community is that Waterkloof should have managed this Covid situation like most other schools who deal with it on a daily basis. Stemming for that they should have acted in good faith and honoured the fixture by selecting the unaffected players available.
Everyone in the education field is taking health and safety very seriously, Klofies and Monnas included. However the Waterkloof decision has led to the concerns that their underlying motive was to protect their image against a heavy defeat at the hands of Monnas, which would have been detrimental towards their marketing around “Opedag” and ahead of 2023 placements in the competitive Pretoria region where kids/parents have the options of good schools in relatively close proximity to one another.
