Varsity Cup Young Guns: Maties squad

When it comes to rugby, the University of Stellenbosch (Maties) has a long and proud history. They have produced 172 Springboks and 15 Springbok captains. To this day, their students form the nucleus of the Stormers, the Western Province senior and under-21 teams as well as the Vodacom Cup team. With 44 teams from 16 hostel rugby clubs participate in the Steinhoff Matie hostel league, the Maties have more than 1300 registered players playing league matches. The Maties first team has won the Varsity Cup in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Last year their under-20 team contested the inaugural Young Guns Varsity Cup final, going down 35-26 to Tuks in a highly entertaining match. This year with a brand new under-20 team the Maties aim to go one better.  To take up this challenge a very formidable squad of players will don on the famous maroon jerseys.

There is plenty players eligible to play for the Matie YG that is not listed here. Only a light sprinkle of the victorious 2012 WP u/19 team. Perhaps they are in the senior squad.

Good to see Neil Oelofse there. Gosh he has bulked up since school if he is 115kg now. He was only about 100kg 2 years ago. Surprisingly quite a few studying Theology, maybe priest, pastors, ministers, clergyman of the future. 3 very light weight locks too….

@rugbyfan: Yes Meyer and Tucker were both in the Sharks u19 23 player squad last year.

I think Meyer saw the writing on the wall. Once Richard Palframan left for the UK by rights he should have been the starter, but the Sharks opted for schoolboy Marne Coetzee instead.
