Varsity Cup Young Guns: Tuks leaving ‘niks’ to chance

The University of Pretoria (Tukkies) are the defending Varsity Cup Young Guns champions. With this year’s tournament about to kick-off, they have put themselves the best possible position to retain the under-20 title by naming a star-studded 57-man group. With the list containing a good blend of under-19 and under-20 players, it will be interesting to see which of the first year players eventually makes the starting line-up. In terms of player positions, Ruan “Stoney” Steenkamp, the 2011 SA Schools captain stands out. He is listed as a hooker cum openside flank, a move that perhaps gives a better idea of where his future in rugby lies.

@Moppie: Jammer, maar wat is “homofobia”? As ek moord teenstaan is dit “moorfobia”? As dit so is, dan is ek trots skuldig aan “homofobia”

@Moppie: Mooi Poppie, dit lyk my hulle kom nou vir langer skooltoe daar by julle.

With H Meyer now as the SA coach, they are also “transforming” at this level. Back line players will soon become extinct and props and locks will be used in those positions.

Great to see young Stander and Smith in that mix. This is going to be great for their development.I was really scared that with that mass recruitment the Bulls did, they would end up being part of the furniture.

@Klofie Pa: It does not include all the Bulls U19 players. It seems as if only those registered to study have been included.

Looking forward to seeing Dan Kriel back, missed his chance last year due to injury. Also looking forward to seeing Reegan on this stage, don’t think we have seen his best by a long shot, going to thrive in this sort of atmosphere.

@Klofie Pa: Presies my punt.

@All Black: I was actually trying to get something together on the WP Rugby Institute. Got all except the background info on how it works but it seems like most of the top u19s spend year 1 at WPRI not studying at all, then a lot of them move onto Maties in year 2. Both are in Stellenbosch.

I see Maties have not included a single U19 in their squad so that will change, I am sure.

great to see Witsies back in the big time – man, when I played for Wits under 20’s in the early 1990’s, the 1st team was sensational and included James Small, Gavin Lawless, Simon Berridge, Gary Grant amongst other. I remember them beating Tuks with Robert Du Preez, Uli Schmidt, Nass Botha etc in the line-up?

Beet – can you get the Wits, UCT and UJ young guns squads?

Any idea what the second tier schedule looks like – I’d like to go along and support the KZN Impis during the season – would be good to see if there are home games for KZN this year.

The talented tighthead Neethling Fouche has been withdrawn form all forms of rugby by the Bulls managemt due to a long term knee injury.
Unfortunately he has missed out on the 3 SA under 20 warm up fixtures in the cape.

Plenty of front row and scrumhalves. 22 out of the 57. The highest injury rate is probably front rows, Loose forwards and centres. Bit thin on wings so will probably have cover from centres and full backs.
