Maritzburg College retained their KwaZulu-Natal 7s title at Glenwood on Saturday. The boys from Sleepy Hollow saw off a tough challenge from hosts Glenwood, winning 17-15 in the end. There was more for College to celebrate later on Saturday evening when it was announced that old boy and Sharks hooker Craig Burden had been called up to the Springbok squad.
Kearsney edged out Westville 14-12 in an equally close affair to claim third spot in this annual 7s event, while the Michaelhouse won the Plate final and George Campbell was the Bowl winners.
College will now represent KZN in the National Championship 7s tournament to be held in November.
Earlier in the year Sarel Cilliers of Glencoe won the Northern Natal 7s tournament held at Pionier in Vryheid. Pionier were runners-up then and they were also the 2010 winners at Glenwood.
The tournaments still to come are:
25 August – Excelsior in Cape Town
1 September – Stirling High in East London
8 September – Hoërskool Brandwag in Uitenhage
15 September – Volkskool Heidelberg
22 September – Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria
Provincial Tournaments
13 October – Hoërskool Kempton Park in Kempton Park
20 October – Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp
2 & 3 November – Champions Tournament (Venue TBC)
I believe the KZN schools 7s team has been selected. I wonder if this tournament was used as trials for the selections.
@All Black: The F1 Team in Schools Challenge is a competition, open to all SA based secondary schools and colleges, to design and manufacture compact gas cylinder powered model racing cars. Student teams will compete against each other in a national championship to determine the best engineered and fastest car in SA. It’s just like being in a real Formula One team. The competition is run by Sangari Institute – a not-for-profit organisation established with committed partners to provide an exciting yet challenging educational experience through the magnetic appeal of Formula One. F1 in Schools is rapidly realising its potential of becoming the only truly global educational program that raises awareness of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) among students and school children in every region, in every country, on every continent. Spanning age ranges of 9 to 19 its main objective is to help change perceptions of engineering, science and technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Maths, science, marketing and technology.
Could just produce the next Rory Byrne or Gordon Murray!! … or Michael Naicker with GTi :-))

@Gungets Tuft: What is this F1 thing? At first I thought we had a formula 1 team but obviously not.
an enjoyable day , especially the final – as the announcer said at prizegiving the 2 best teams played the final
this nearly ended in another draw – had the last try been converted – well done to College
@GreenBlooded: I am told that College also qualified for the World finals in the “F1 in Schools” competition in Abu Dhabi as well. Trying to find out more about that, bit busy to dig.
Well done Glenwood Boys on getting to the final, great result. Also well done to Prenelan Subrayen for starting the rot against England U19. Your wickets broke the English resistence and I see you in the Proteas in years to come :-)
@All Black: It’s also worth mentioning that a College blogger leads our Superbru compo. Huge weekend for College.
Didn’t know this until Pedantic pointed it out, but he is also Hillcrest Villagers Junior Rugby Club’s first ever Springbok – having played for our club in his junior years. Well done Craig – and well deserved. Looks like Maritzburg College will be asking their signwriter for a quote this morning!
And Craig Burden got a Bok call-up for Argentina. Hope he gets a cap.
Good weekend for College. They also won the KZN Soccer tournament and Calvin Savage featured prominently in the SA U19 cricket teams progress to the semi’s in the WC.
