Match report: Maritzburg College 42 Pretoria Boys High 28

13 April, 2014 beet 38

This was a super-duper entertain packaged game played on Goldstones in Pietermaritzburg. When 70-points get scored in 70-minutes, there is room for constructive negative comments about defensive structures and tackling, however during this game it really felt like the positives like attacking running lines, strength in contact, individual skills and good handling was more responsible for the high score than defensive lapses.…

There is a very positive vibe about Noordvaal school rugby going around right now. The Gauteng English Medium Schools (GEMS) got the defence of their Grogper Cup title off to a perfect start via Boys High but then had to sweat as KES needed a late winner after they threw away a 17-0 lead against DHS. Jeppe gave debutants Glenwood a run for their money before it was Kearsney’s turn to hang on for a win after Boys High launched a late fight back from 0-21 down.…

Harrismith part of the Noord-Suid Toernooi

23 March, 2014 beet 1

The lesson learned from the Noord-Suid Toernooi 2014 will be that irrespective of how much money organisers have at their disposals, attracting top teams to participate is in a first time festival played during the school holidays is a lot easier said than done.

In their desperation to find a fourth team to be part of the inaugural Noord-Suid Toernooi, those in charge have had to settle on relatively unknown Free State Griffons rugby school Harrismith…

As many of you who follow the Blog already know, former Springbok Pieter Rossouw with the sponsorship backing of Barloworld has been trying to get a new Noord-Suid tournament organised.

In an idea world if this tournament consisted of just the top six schools it would have seen the best that Pretoria has to offer namely Affies, Waterkloof and right here right now Garsfontein come up against the top feeder schools of the WPRU, which would definitely be Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys High and Paul Roos.…

A final decision regarding Grey Bloem playing Paarl Gim at Wildeklawer Skouspel 2014 will be made any day now.

Monnas rugby fixtures 2014

30 January, 2014 beet 2

The saying goes “you can’t keep a good man down” and the same can be said of a good rugby school. Over the past couple of seasons Monument from Krugersdorp has not achieved bad results but overall they have not been what one has come to expect from a school that sets its rugby bar very high. 2014 could be the season that sees them return to a ranking position amongst the very top rugby schools in South Africa.

The detailed Monnas Witbulle fixture list also provides important dates of both Golden Lions regional schools and national events coming up. It’s worth perusing.…

EG Jansen accused of kidnapping 2 u15 rugby players

A story in the Beeld yesterday (http://www.beeld.com/nuus/2014-01-23-2-onnies-ontvoer-glo-rugbyseuns) tells of how Vereeniging Gymnasium opened a case of kidnapping against EG Jansen teachers at the police station. This was after the two EG Jansen teachers allegedly drove onto the Gimmies premises last week to picked up two “brilliant” Gimmies rugby players and then left without informing either the Gimmies hostel housemaster or the teacher on duty of their intentions.

Smaller rugby schools’ players dominate Golden Lions awards 2013

4 December, 2013 beet 3

This year’s annual Golden Lions awards ceremony turned out to be a fitting tribute to the big role smaller schools still play in developing talent for senior rugby.  Some of those rewarded for achievement in the different team categories (u19, u21 and senior) schooled at the likes of Alberton, Bredasdorp, Hartswater, Marais Viljoen, Pretoria North, Standerton and Transvalia.…

u19 & u21 Currie Cup: Bulls eyeing 2 cups in 2013

21 October, 2013 beet 11

Although this is Currie Cup final week and just about all the media attention during the build-up to Saturday’s big match is expected to be focused on the finalists Western Province and the Sharks, there is a little something that the Bulls can still get out of the season. Their under-19 team has been favourites to claim the title since day one of the season and their reinforced under-21’s, boosted by the return of several senior Currie Cup players including a Springbok to the age-group ranks, is looking equally hot ahead of the junior finals, which will also take place on Saturday at Newlands.…

Free State under-19 players for 2014

5 September, 2013 beet 41

Under the guidance of under-19 head coach Andre Tredoux, Free State have worked very hard on recruitment this year. Helped by the Cheetahs excellent 2013 Super Rugby season, all the effort put in seems to have paid off. The 2014 group is a strong one, filled with known talent as well as a few wildcards who could just go on to become the next big thing in SA rugby. All-in-all 3 SA Schools players are part of a talented squad that should do very well in the under-19 Currie Cup next season. Apologies, although provided the names of Gunther Janse van Rensburg and WP Eloff were overlooked but have now been added.

Noordvaal Champions League 2013 final standings

26 August, 2013 beet 11

The Noordvaal season has come to an end. It was a thrilling year of rugby. What really made it special was that a number of teams came to the party. At the beginning of the year I personally was thinking here we go, Klofies and Monnas all the way as far as the cup combos go. When I found out that Klofies had withdrawn from the NuPower, I honestly thought that trophy had just become second rate. However the likes of HTS Middelburg, Nelspruit, EG Jansen and Garsfontein all stepped up to the plate and hit hit the ball out the park with top class performances. Adding to the excitement is that Klofies and Monnas had their moments as well but just somehow could not sustain their efforts. As a result, match-ups were interesting, outcomes were hard to predict  and Noordvaal hasn’t looked back. 2014 is going to find it hard to live up to the hype of this year.…
