@Ploeg: Maybe I am too much into the poverty alleviation thing, hence my support for what Rugbyman is doing. Had these boys stayed where they were with unemployment rates of 85% and school feeding schemes their main support structure, where would they end up? Under such circumstances it is not, as you put it, uprooting. In fact, it is rooting, as they receive top education in a better environment and if they don’t make it in rugby, they have a chance of making it in another trade of life. So comparing this to cattle trade is to my mind way off the mark. Indeed, if more top schools do the same, the quicker our country will become a better place.

@Rugbyman: No need to move to Landbou, as he was moved from Kasselsvlei to Bellville beginning gr.9, where he has since excelled and developed. WP u16 Elite squad, WP u16 GK and WP u18 Elite squad, and “earmarked for future progression in the WP junior system already”, if you know what I mean. So, honestly, what could you really have offered in addition?

@Ploegskaar: Oh sorry ploegie… PJ is still extremely happy! He’s looking great and practices very hard! As far as the wp fullback is concerned he was contacted because he was very highly rated… he wasnt interested in moving though, so nothing further happened… u can relax and try to move him “locally” to Landbou maybe? as u reckon thats acceptable…

At garsies we are hard at work getting ready for the next season… our squad looks good and Im sure we will pose good opposition to whoever comes our way in 2014… hence my absence/holiday/break from here…

I can clearly see I have been missed though? StRugbyman? I am flattered… No thanks though, I am just a commoner from Pretoria…

Mario Wilson went to Paarl Boys’ High. Not sure what position he played… though I assume winger because he runs the 100m in around 11 seconds, same as Dewald Naude.

IMO WP slipped up but he gave a verbal agreement to the Sharks when he was approached at some tournament earlier during the year ( before CW).

He has kept his word (which I admire) and many can take a leaf out of his book !

@Djou: Don’t hold your breath, still waiting for him to state their motivation for contacting the current WP GK fullback from Bellville a few months ago. Like PJ Toerien, this player has been in the WP structures for a while, achieved the highest recognition available to a player of his age group provincially and nationally and will be part of the 2014 WP Elite Group. Wonder what else they could offer? BTW @Rugbyman, PJ still happy?

I will stick with cattle trade as long as the interests of these youngsters take a backseat to those of the Union and then the school, in that order. That (if?) the boys “benefit” is in any event merely a consequence of self-interest, certainly not moral obligation or philanthropy.

@Tjoppa: Distasteful, because there is no reason to uproot a youngster from his family and familiar surroundings and re-locate him to another province, if your primary motivation is to secure his services after school. Pollard and Basson were already signed at u/16 level after all, but they were allowed to complete their schooling at Gym and Boland respectively because they are obviously not soft quota targets/boys from a poor socio-economic background.

Before I get branded a hypocrite, I don’t have a problem with boys moving schools locally (Boland & Peninsula) though. In fact, I will gladly prompt, encourage, assist and facilitate when talented players want to move to specific schools that I openly favour

@Tjoppa: Yea, you are right – not some – let’s change it to quite a lot.
@Ploeg: Ok, let’s wait on the St. Rugbyman, but at least the group above shows he was not talking nonsense. About cattle trade, I’m not sure it is the same thing. Cattle end up dead and in this case kids get a chance in life.
There is always a cause and consequence.
At the Cheetahs we will gladly take young Ackers and all the others the Bulls will cause to be disillusioned over the next couple of years.
@Muzi: It’s the professional era is not a very good answer. In fact, it is an excuse when you don’t have an answer. It’s the same as saying “it is a slow growing economy” when in fact bad policies cause an unemployment rate of 35%, or 8 million unemployed people.

Garsies assist players with contracts at other unions, or to further their studies, when the Bulls decide not to contract them. @Woltrui @ Muzi: Read somewhere Ackers still in grade 11 this year. He however was born something like on 30 December and will turn 18 this year. Will therefore be u.19 next year and ineligible for Craven Week and NuPower. Can play in Beeld trophy though.
@Ploegskaar: Seems Rugbyman was correct all the time: Garsies doing their own recruiting and not the Bulls as most of the current players were contracted by Lions, Cheetahs and PUK Rugby Institute.

@Tarpeys: Yes, he’s only played about 24 games of rugby in his entire life. He used to be a hockey player. As you say though, he is very skilful, quick and large. I don’t think that your stats are accurate though, as I believe that he is north of 2m tall and 123kg.

He is a very nice guy too – he is head-boy of St Albans. It will be interesting to see how he does. He was absolutely colossal for St Alban’s – the team’s performances dropped massively when he and Abongile were missing for the last few games of the season. That said, St Alban’s don’t play the likes of Affies, GCB, etc.

I hear that the Bulls want him to lose up to 10kg so that he can play in the loose trio.

Human has had a brilliant season and the Kwaggas coach has done very well to protect him on defence but at the next level, either he will have to be able to ball carrier in the channel or become a wing or fullback.

Here’s a major bolter. Jason Jenkins, St Albans lock. I saw this kid at st Stithians fest. Apparently 197cm 127 kg and runs the 100m in way under 12 seconds. He is a monster and will rattle some of the more fancied and renowned players. Word in Pretoria is that he’s the first player to be signed by the Bulls without seeing him play a single minute of rugby. He is a colossus. Many think he’s probably a future bok No7.

My only issue is how the Bulls handled Pollard’s work load he didn’t get a break at all this year….poor guy was on duty for Tukkies,Baby Boks, Vodacom Cup and CC…..played too much rugby.
I was unhappy with his positional switch to inside centre after moving back to flyhalf he took time to find his feet again hence the dodgy goal kicking ratio and the odd mistake here and there…..he’s a better player than what we witnessed in the currie cup.
Louis Fouche is a more accurate goal kicker i know FL will play it safe…Pollard is still not ready give him another year.

For all the moaning about the Bulls “placing” players at Garsfontein, Menlopark and Southdowns, the conversion rate from 2013 for 2014 is just one player, from Garsfontein. Maybe the recruitment is after all a schools’ initiative as opposed to a Union initiative? Just asking.

Also, if the Bulls were looking for a fly with a sound tactical kicking game, Tian Nel would have been the logical and better option. Although Murphy is versatile (can play 9 as well), Nel was the best 10 off the tea and out of hand this season in the WC, banking a few 60m penalties, 50m drop kicks and last play match winners along the way.

Overall a good net, just looking at the boys from Outeniqua and Affies.

It’s going to be wide open…WP are favourites to win the title IMHO….Bulls,Sharks,Cheetahs and Lions all have good Under 19 groups.

Looks like Queens has become a Flyhalf factory for the Bulls

@Grasshopper: Webster is in matric this year even though he’s U17.

So Kurt Webster must have left DHS, huge loss for them and KZN. I wonder what school he is at, Garsies? Seems the Bulls got every game breaker from the good Kwaggas 2013 team…

Guess 19 year olds dont mind sitting on the bench as long as they getting paid. Not picking on these guys as it happens everywhere but dont understand how Bulls land good young FHs when Pollard is cleary going to occupy the Bulls nr 10 jersey for years. I guess all 4 big unions are pretty set at 10 except WP where I still think they need a big time 10.

IMHO Bulls Under 19’s had a better squad in 2013 but it’s not a bad group loads of talent.
Geez why on earth would the Bulls sign four Number 8’s…flyhalves and scrumhalves!?!?!…..another case of stockpiling.  ….a few surprises in the group most notably Wyatt Murphy but then again he does have an educated boot.
It’s obvious the Bulls have big plans with Burger van Niekerk, RG Snyman, Jurie Linde, Peet Schoeman, Duhan van der Merwe and Warrick Gelant, Hanro Liebenberg and Matthys Basson all of them will spend time with the senior side in December during preseason.
Just a bit of good news….I just found out Martin Groenewald is already running after the broken leg he suffered against Grey College.
