Braam van Straaten headlines KZN school coaching changes ahead of 2017

20 September, 2016 beet 16

Former Springbok flyhalf Braam van Straaten has been appointed as the new St Charles College (Pietermaritzburg) fulltime Rugby Specialist with immediate effect. The positive vibes already coming out of St Charles, who’s rugby is set for another spike over the few year, speaks volumes about van Straaten’s potential to do an outstanding job as he’s made the great impression in next to no time at all. The 44-year-old former Wonderboom High School student is just one of many personal changes set to reshape the fairly small KZN Tier-1 rugby scene, which has a bit of a reputation for it’s high turnover of 1st XV rugby officials.…

KZN to deliberate over yet another Craven Week expectations failure

25 August, 2016 beet 112

Officials from KZN will meet today to discuss the high school Youth Weeks. If this was a meeting held in the Western Province it would be a celebratory occasion, fit for many high-fives, pats on backs and chest beating by various goal achieving officials. However it being KZN who are close to the opposite side of the success rate spectrum, the meeting can’t possibly revolve around many compliments particularly when it focuses its attention on Craven Week, unless of course window-dressing becomes the order of the day.…

Kearsney and Hilton in a showpiece

5 June, 2016 beet 7

Kearsney supporters had to bite their nails for a while but eventually got to celebrate Old Boys’ Day in style as their One-Stripes came from behind to beat a gutsy Hilton 20-8 on the Stott, avenging their loss to the same opponents in the Midlands earlier in the season. The high intensity match was a great advert for schoolboy rugby as both sets of players put their bodies on the line in an effort to manufacture a winning outcome, producing a good quality match in the process.…

Jeppe beats Northwood 46-14 – match report 2016

24 April, 2016 beet 32

Johannesburg visitors Jeppe produced a five-star first half backline performance on their way to recording a 46-14 victory against Northwood. The Jeppe backs combined brilliantly to exploit the spaces on the field. Using speed, superior handling and vision, they scored five tries in the first 35-minutes, helping their team to change ends at 41-7 to the good. All credit to Northwood as well. The second half score of 7-5 in the home team’s favour speaks volumes about a team that never threw in the towel and showed a lot of character.…
