Quotas unlikely to end any time soon

15 August, 2013 beet 31

Those of you who thought or hoped we might be nearing a time when rugby quotas in SA get scrapped and transformation starts to take care of itself, guess again. For the 2014 Vodacom Cup season SARU has just upped it’s transformation drive by instituting quotas along the lines of those used to determine school age-group provincial teams.

The future of Dale College

14 August, 2013 beet 39

An article by Playa ahead of this weekends big Dale vs Queens derby – one of the oldest and best in South Africa.

Unbeknown to most, Dale College admitted its first black learner way back in 1901. It would be another 90 years before the next group of what were then known as ‘Guinea Pigs’ would be admitted as Dalians.

Dale played their first all-school game in 1891 against their biggest foe to date, Queens College. Out of the school’s 4 main rivals (others being Selborne College, St Andrews College and Grey High School), and until recently Queens have been the only rival that has won more games than Dale on head to head (Grey PE went ahead of Dale in 2005). Dale were last ahead of Queens in 1975.…

SA Schools named changed team to face France u18

12 August, 2013 beet 17

A number of changes have been made to the SA Schools starting line-up for the second round of the under-18 international series. France got thumped properly by Wales and one suspects that French under-18’s will have to reinvent themselves just as their under-20 national team did against the Baby Boks at the Junior World Champs earlier this year, if they are to stand any change during this game. The curtain-raiser is Wales versus England which should be a cracker. The SWD Craven Week team minus a number of their stars who are on duty for SA Schools, will have a shot against the wounded Italian under-18 team in the earlier game. It should be good.…

KZN 2014 fixtures put on ice

12 August, 2013 beet 7

There is a lot of enjoyment derived from watching KZN schoolboy rugby. It’s good rugby and there is a lot of passion and commitment on display. But lets face it, there’s also a ton of sidelines drama here in the province as well. So I couldn’t help but laugh when I found out that even when all rivals are at off-season peace with each other and things feel like they have settled down, along comes the Minister of Education to get in on the act and properly ….. ! There will be a lot of holidays during the 2014 KZN school rugby season. …

So very tight at the top. All the interest has been on the top 2 who are only separated by 5 100ths of a point. Further down, the Northvaal battle via the BeeldTrofee is winding down with Jansies and Nellies looking set to contest for 5th spot in SA this year. In form Klofies not done yet in either and they could still claim a top 10 finish in 2013.…

It’s virtually official – Affies will be no.1 in 2013

6 August, 2013 beet 86

Well I asked BHP to run the numbers regarding whether Paarl Gim could overtake Affies on the BHP SA Top 50 rankings (the formula driven ranking system). In a nutshell the answer is NO! No matter what Gim do in their up and coming games, they don’t have enough in terms of quality opposition to reel in Affies at the top.

Glenwood beats Maritzburg College 33-15

5 August, 2013 beet 11

The KwaZulu-Natal schoolboy rugby season ended with an entertaining match on Dixons field in Durban where Glenwood hosted Maritzburg College. College got out of the blocks well building up a 15-0 lead by the 20th minute. Glenwood fought back with five tries during the next 50 minutes to eventually run out 33-15 winners and increase an unbeaten streak against College that now dates back to 2010.…

Affies or Gimmies: who is no.1 in SA?

5 August, 2013 beet 84

When BHP’s latest formula-driven rankings come out later this week, expect the country’s two top ranked teams Affies and Paarl Gymnasium to be closer than ever before in terms of points, following their respective derby wins over the weekend against the PBHS’s namely Pretoria Boys High School and Paarl Boys High School. The season is not over BUT one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that ranking systems and formulas aside, there is one “Moerse Groot” debate ahead IF Gimmies win their remaining games this season.…

Absa u19: Sharks (Academy) bounce back big time

This weekend’s outstanding 51-33 result by the Sharks under-19’s against the formidable Free State Cheetahs must have come a blessing in disguise. The Sharks coaches would have backed their boys to achieve this kind of success later in the season but following a home defeat the Lions a fortnight ago, the away victory this early on must surely have been a pleasant surprise to those who work with the team.…

Montpellier beats the Durban u18 (DRSU)

4 August, 2013 beet 2

The Durban Rugby Sub Union (DSRU) completed yet another successful initiative at the Varsity College Riverside ground in Durban North on Sunday evening where they hosted touring French club Montpellier. The DSRU fills an important gap in the age-group youth rugby market by providing opportunities for youngsters to obtain a high standard of training and compete at a level that enhances their skills. There is also the incentive to earn provincial colours if they are good enough to play at the annual IPT. To find out more about the DRSU go to their website at http://www.drsujuniorrugby.co.za/

Maritzburg College and Glenwood, the only two KwaZulu-Natal teams that play third term rugby will be in action today on Dixons. The game will mark the end of the rugby careers of many open age group College boys who no doubt will all want to go out with a bang. It’s also the last game of the KZN tier-1 season. Glenwood still have one fixture after this weekend, an away trip to Bloemfontein to meet Grey College next week. Throughout today there are expected to be some very competitive match-ups all the way from under-14 up to the 1st XV game. All-in-all there are 24 games being played.…

BHP Top 50 Rankings – calculations explanation

1 August, 2013 beet 15

Rankings 101:

Some Bloggers still don’t understand the concept of earning points per match according to the category ranked school you play and that the ranking is thus formula driven and not “adjusted” by BHP as seen fit. It is as simple as this: If you played and won high category schools you will have higher average points per game.

The idea that BHP has “given in to pressure” about Affies is absolute nonsense and absurd. Affies earned it by playing and beating Category 4 and 5 schools well and thus earning a slightly higher average game-point. Paarl Gim will most probably overtake them again if they win Interschools as Boishaai have a 5 point scalp!

Beeld Trofee 2013: Quarterfinals

31 July, 2013 beet 24

beeld The business end of the 2013 BeeldTrofee for Macro schools  is upon us. Eight schools will battle it out for the remaining four places. The standard of the Noordvaal top tier rugby has been extremely high this year. There is a bottleneck at the top with no one wanting to give an inch. The result is that the BeeldTrofee for macro schools 2013 has no clear-cut favourite. Anyone of six schools namely HTS Middelburg, Waterkloof, Nelspruit, Monnas, Garsfontein and EG Jansen can win it. This is where BMT now takes over and nothing less that bring an A-game to the match-day will suffice.

Matches will take place on Saturday, 03 August 2013
