@Roger: It was a good game. PBHS made too many errors and gave away far too many penalties which meant they were chasing the game from the start. KES were 16 nil up at one stage and I thought the game might get away from PBHS.
However, the second half was a very tight affair and PBHS showed much more intent. In the end PBHS scored three tries to the two by KES but the early penalties cost PBHS dearly.
This is a young PBHS first team (at least 10 starters will be back next season) and in the last few weeks they have shown a great resolve to fight back. The remarkable effort to over turn a 29 point deficit into a 31-29 win over St Benedicts will stand by this young side next year.
KES were excellent at the break downs and got good quick ball. When PBHS were on attack, KES were good at slowing the ball down and making it difficult to attack.
The result is a fair reflection of the game. KES were the better team and they are a much improved team from early March.

@Vleis: U14 KES to win by 3-7, U15 KES to win by 10-20, U16 Jeppe to win by 15-30, 1st KES to win by 3-7

I keep thinking of that Northwood fixture – KES won by 50 and Jeppe lost to them 8-O

@Tang: Having now watched KES and Jeppe play against St Alban’s on consecutive weekends, my predictions are as follows:

u14A – I’m not sure, as Jeppe’s B team played St Alban’s A team. If push comes to shove, I’ll go with Jeppe u14.
u15A – KES is comfortably the better team – even home ground advantage for Jeppe won’t close the gap.
u16A – Jeppe is much stronger, but won’t beat KES by 60 points, like Affies u16A did. The KES u16A is started to click, so I suspect a 20 to 30 point margin. Also, Jeppe u16A is very good, but I don’t think they’ll remain at number 1. I’ll support them against Monnas u16A, but I’ll be surprised if they win that game.
1st – too close to call. KES have a better drilled pack and more slick backs, but Jeppe are more physical and have much larger backs – especially the 11 and 13, who have thighs that a Samoan would be proud of. Very different styles, but I’ll go with Jeppe due to home ground advantage.

    @Ringo – A few points.

    1) Be cautious about results from u14 to u16 level as an indication of what will happen in the future.
    2) Pretoria Boys High School will be right back up where they belong in the near future. There is wide spread recognition at PBHS, that traditional rivals have evolved and are more competitive.
    3) To sustain the levels Jeppe are currently at requires loads of money. Jeppe have been able to get some good players on bursary and recent results have been very good. As I understand it, Jeppe are handing out many bursaries and this has had a positive effect on results.

I am a huge fan of the Jeppe transformation but I have seen many unbeaten u16 rugby teams come hugely unstuck at first team level. I have seen huge scores at u16 over turned at open age group level. The Jeppe sides (u14 to u16) have some big boys who seem to have matured pretty early. On the other hand, PBHS seem to have relatively small u14 to u16 boys and this can change in 9 months at high school.
Be very cautious about talking up a dream team. Being ranked number 1 at U16 level places a huge target on your back.

Having watched both Jeppe and KES beat PBHS at Boys High this year, I can tell you that Jeppe will have no walk over against KES. If Jeppe think they have the KES game in the bag, they are going to have a rude wake up call.

@Roger: @Roger: We are proud to be playing competitive rugby again participations is up at school as well. There were stretches were we could not beat Kes even on a blue moon Saturday and the 2012 win by Jeppe was an abiration. In Reg Hammond you have Psychologist who seems to have gotten the boys over the fear of success. Affies would be a major coup but I saw them beat Jeppe beat us by 18 points playing the whole second half with 14 players after their lock had been red carded, although stranger have happened in SBR. Affies absolutely refuse lose to an English team ego their 15-12 win over Kes a coupple of season ago where I understand Kes led almost that whole game.

@Ringo: I love it that Jeppe are back to their best – the “classic clash” was getting a touch one sided, as the stats above will tell you. However, don’t forget 2012 – KES overwhelming favorites with a great team and got done by Jeppe against all odds. Don’t count your chickens!

Good luck against Affies this weekend – the Jackson’s will be cock a hoop if you pull this one off!

@Ringo: Affies U14a will beat Jeppe by 20-30 points I’ve watched both teams play and Affies will be far too strong for Jeppe. With 20 odd craven week players in the Affies U14 age group they are proper.

@Vleis: two of the three loses the Jeppe u16 have had are to Affies and on both occasions discipline was the problem if they keep their heads and play to their full potential the once thought after a team win over affies can be achieved. However this and the u14 game should be crackers.

@Ringo: It’s likely that their 4th loss will take place this weekend but there is no shame in that given that Affies are ranked number 1. It should be a cracker – Jeppe’s backs may have a slight advantage, but their pack will be weaker than Affies. I’ll tell you one thing for free, Jeppe should break with tradition and allow the u16A to play on the main field so that the brilliant backs can showcase their talent and maybe cause an upset.

@Ringo: I agree KES are going through a difficult patch but U14a we should be able to hold our own against Jeppe, U15a we should win, U16a you should win by a margin and 1st XV will be a close affair. I’m comfortable that the rest of the teams will do well. Remember there are 4 boys in the U14a that hadn’t played rugby till this year so took them a while to get started. Last year was the first time Jeppe had beaten KES in two consecutive seasons in 21 years so as they say “one swallow doesn’t make a summer’ (no crude comments boys) and the last time that Jeppe beat KES 3 times in a row was 58 years ago, so not too easy. KES will be on top form again I have all the confidence in them.

@Vleis: no doubt helpies and monnas have some incredibly talented boys in their sides, as a team the jeppe boys as nearly unstoppable. Promise you these kids are the right age. In 3 they have been at the school they have lost only 3 rugby games. A dream team by any schools measure. I do however think the grant khomo team is a fair reflection of lions u16 rugby and the best players have been selected

@Ringo: As good as they are, there is no way that “the whole Jeppe u16 should be in Grant Khomo side”. For starters, Monnas have a very strong u16 team, plus Helpmekaar are not too shabby either. In fact, Helpies pulled off a surprise earlier this season by beating Jeppe u16A by 17 to 10 at Jeppe.

On a different note, I wonder if the GLRU will complete a thorough age audit of this squad?

@Vin: that whole Jeppe u16 should be in Grant Khomo side Reg Hammond Jeppe 1st XV and lions Grant Khomo coach did not want seem baised. What is Decline of the Reds if comapre them to the school from the other side of the ridge which do not consider as your traditional rivals the future for the Reds is rather Glum. The rankings speak for themselves :
Jeppe u14 ranked 14 while Kes are 54, Jeppe u15 ranked 21 while kes are 43, u16 trully embarrassing for the Reds Jeppe are 1st kes is 71st…its only at 1st XV level that it is close Jeppe is 27th and Kes is 38th. And it is not the days of Matt Arnold where Kes can easily poach players from Jeppe. Tough ahead for Kes in the next 5 years from your none rivals.

@Speartackle: When I complained a few years ago, Monnas had 2nd team players in the Academy week team despite the fact that the Monnas 1st team lost to KES (at home nogal) and the 2nd team were clobbered by KES 2nds.

This year, KES have an average team, while Monnas have a reasonably good team, so I don’t think that the selections are that strange. I’d have expected to see more Jeppe u16 boys in the Grant Khomo team though. I think the Jeppe v Monnas u16A team game will be interesting.

@star: do Westville play Affies or Monnas across the board at all? Ask any College, PBHS or KES rugby player who they would rather play – Westville or Affies? I think I know what the answer would be – not having a go – just putting my “picnic” remark into context. No matter what the score the game is not as “hard” – that’s all. @ Roger-” absolute picnic” You are obviously not factoring in the hockey results which was my point about zero respite. Also your 2nd team which drew with Affies and was unbeaten, lost by 20. Just a bit of context as aways. By the way the Reds played a great running game and for much of the second half were the dominant team. I always felt that Westville had the ability to move up a gear and when they did they were unstoppable. A bit like our season so far where we have flattered to deceive a little
@Vin- I spoke to a mate who had a son in the U15B team and apparently things started to boil over there and continued into the U15A. The punch is inexcusable but the question I ask you is was this parent controlled prior to that. He was shouting verbals long before as were several parents behind me on the embankment. In fact one parent yelled disgrace into the refs face as he left the field. There were no innocents including both sets of school boy supporters who got unnecessarily involved. When the first fight started the game should have been stopped. What was needed were calm heads by most importantly the parents as that is where the kids take their lead.

@Roger: U14’s were very unlucky to have a try disallowed after scoring under the poles due to a foot in touch. It was a great game, Westville have some sizable boys in the pack. I was very surprised at how many Afrikaans boys were in the Westville U14 team.

@star: I watched the U15a game and the ref had lost control of the game, the parent that behaved badly was standing near me, the reason he was so angry was his son was punched in the back of the head in the open as he was running to the mall (the parent should never have got involved but i suppose it’s difficult when some kid punches your boy from behind). I thought the KES army was very well behaved considering we had a Westville school boy linesman (U14a game) putting his flag out to disallow a try because he thought the lineout wasn’t straight and then getting into an argument with a parent later on in the game because of a high tackle.

@ Roger- I hope you enjoyed the Sunday school picnic this last weekend. The KES army was more or less well behaved except for in the U15A game when the referee was badly abused. It was a real mess from both sides and calm heads were required from all concerned. Sometimes I wonder why refs put up with it.
