@ Beet-lovely life you have got  It would be interesting if you refer to those players that stood out at the end of the day. You have already referred to Holder and Seb as making an impression.

@Far Meadows: yeah those teams are bound too be in the same boat but perhaps thats why they have been matched against each other. In this last game we had a team that understood each other vs individuals, some of whom are very talented but struggled to make an impression as a result of being matched against a co-ordinated effort. So perhaps I should redefine the unfair advantage to the context of the matchup.

@pongola: because of their level of unity a lot of their players were able to impress. I liked no.4, , no.10 was good, 12 had his moments, 13 ran hard and 15 is a good footballer- he reads the game and with the help of his footwork, he can beat tackles.

At trials like this I can the value of being in a team with a good no.10 particularly if he’s a skilled running 10. This N/Ntl 10 reminds me of Morgan Steyn of Selborne who is a confident frontfoot player.

@beet: Hi Beet, surely then in the same manner the boys from the Midlands and the DBN South teams also have an advantage as each team is are made up predominantly of boys from one school. In the Midlands team, it would surely be easier for the four non – MHS boys to fit in than if the team was made up of boys from 5 or 6 different schools.

I haven’t seen Mchunu from Greytown play , but the the three Hilton players are classy players and they should have no problem slotting into this team.

The Northern Natal team has obviously practiced together, probably more than once which gives them unfair advantage at trials like this. They have a high level of cohesion and can thus play at pace. Its definitely not easy at trials like this. You want boys to play for each other and sometimes this is the best way to show off what you’ve got to offer, but at the same time I can’t help but believe that individual brilliance stands out a lot more at trials particularly if you’re not a well-known player/.

The second trial ended with PMB winning as far as tries are concerned. Amongst the boys impressing were the Voortrekker loosie and the Voories fullback as well as the little 10 that stood in for Mac vd Linde.

In this PMB vs South game its one try a piece at halftime. The no6 from Ashton is a well built boy and stays on his feet in contact but not sure about his pace yet. Some of the high profile players are having quiet games so far

Beast Mthemnu of NW is not on after half time so possibly a no show which is a pity becasue he has been one of the more impressive forwards this season and a few tipped him to be a CW candidate this year

The first half of the first trial is up. I think Holder of College made a good impression and the unstructured nature of the game suits Seb de Marigny of Hilton to the tee.

@ Griffon- I agree 100% on Nathan. More than one commentator has said he made the difference when he came on against Kearsney and was one of the reasons we won the collisions against Grey. Since then he has been a standout performer for the 1st team. To not even make the final trials is highly questionable. He must just go out and show what he can do. There are still some big games to come.( especially OBs day against College  )

Another omission which surprised me, was that of S.Phahla who had a slight knee niggle so couldn’t play. Having played GK in 2012 and being the HP squad this year, I thought he would’ve been atleast pushed through.

@ Star : A surprise exclusion which hasn’t been mentioned is that of N. Meihlon. I watched him at trials and he had a good trial game, but I’m guessing the selectors don’t think so. In my opinion he’s one of the best flankers in the province. Got to feel sorry for him as he’s been performing very well this season

@McCulleys Workshop: should come down to who can do the job. The ability to get the backline away on both sides, giving the flyhalf space to work in, defence and attacking kicks, sniping around the base and reading the game. Attitude and passion probably the biggest factor.

9 players PD (hate that phrase as I thinks it’s disrespectful to them as more often they are there on merit) perhaps we should refer to the 14 as CD’s (currently disadvantaged) then it’s not a race this. Beet said 9 PD’s of which 5 on pitch at all times with every one of the 9 have an uninterrupted 70min game out of the three they play. Do the maths boys it’s tough on the kids, coaches and everyone. Damn Verwoed and his croanies!!!

Does PDI always equal Black/coloured or Indian? Just saying I know quite a few white families who are or were disadvantaged, especially single parent homes….

CW loose head but that is the way trials go. Star, I choose my games very carefully and that is the reason I have MHS in the trifecta and not College.I have a feeling that your Hilton could be under pressure from DHS today. I will give you the benefit as you play at home and should have too many guns.

@star: Tedder injured so that is the reason behind him teaming up with Walker. Going to be a very interesting game with the likes of Visser and Tedder in the North section playing against their KC team mates. IMHO Visser should have been in the Highway team as he is the current

@Pedantic- I am a sucker for punishment. I placed the golden ball on the College v KES game and that cost me my crown. Surely I cannot be wrong twice in a row.

@McCulleys- that North team (controlled by Bell) looks very interesting. It includes arguably the CW front row who did not make their respective regional teams. Likewise Gouws( Midlands) and Guma(PMB). I am not sure if Tedder was excluded from the Highways team because he did not attend that trial.

@McCulleys Workshop: I think you will find that many of the players in the overflow teams were boys who did not attend zonal trials due to injury / unforeseen circumstances etc. Not necessarily a side selected on combinations.

@Star – It looks like Stoltz is only the 3rd choice tighthead at Westville ?

I think there are 18 Westville boys. A.Heystek is Westville not Kearsney( although Beet would like to claim him  ). I am surprized to see that Stoltz is not included.(GK in 2013)

@Beet just for a matter of interest R Muil in the North Durban Team is the Northwood captain, not from DHS as they have it on the sheets,
Trials are going to be very interesting.
