DPHS 2009 team – where are they today

A comment last week by Hilty before the Hilton-Michaelhouse derby about the two captains Jayson Gouws (Penzance, Hilton) and Thomas Walker (DPHS, MHS) both being the 2009 KZN under-13 Craven Week flanks, prompted this research on what had happened to Thomas Walker’s teammates from the DPHS 2009 team. Apart from Walker, former Prep players Daryn Goodson (College) and Tristan Tedder (Kearsney) who was also the DPHS and KZN under-13 Craven captain, now lead their respective high school 1st XV’s.

Well done Merchiston on winning all their games at the recent Wetpups Festival. Does anyone know the Highbury vs Merchiston result from yesterday?

I have it on good authority that Tyron Faber has been promoted to the MHS 1st team and that should inject some pace into the backline. To be honest, I thought he should have been in the starting XV from the beginning of the season and having been sent to the Midlands trails this week , he has made it through to the final trials in PMB on the 20th.
That means that there will be 8 ex Prep boys in the MHS/KC contest on founders day and that adds a little more spice to the occasion.

The 2009 side only lost 1 game and that was at the Trinity House Festival against Paarl Boys 17 – 10 with the winning try coming in the last movement of the game from their own 22m line. Yes, the 2008 side was the dream team but 2009 not far behind. As far as provincial reps, the 2009 side comes out tops. Mike Dick and John Duncan were amazing in 2009 and the boys played for each other, much the same as the KC side of 2014.

@star: Ja. I have a nephew (now at College) and niece (matric at Westville Girls) who came through WSP and are all the better for the environment that he created there. Eeisch.

@beet it would be an interesting exercise to do this for the 2008 DPHS team too. It had the twins, Matt Reece-Edwards, and a number of other great players. Anyone have the team list?

@ Gungets-it is an absolute tragedy. I remember ragging him for being a College boy but he was everything to be expected and more. A real dedicated gentleman. I hope the boys (and girls) of 2009 and the other 15 years recognise and appreciate what a privilege it was to have been part of his influence and application.

@star: 2009 1st Team Captain for Penzance was Kyan Braithwaite

Speaking of games from that year, possibly the best game of primary school rugby i have ever watched was Penzance v WSPS at Penzance. Braithwaite knocking over 2 drop goals late to secure a win for Penzance…. what a epic game that was!

@Gungets Tuft: It rocked the community here mate. Have mates with kids there – traumatised is not the word. Imagine having to deliver an emergency explanation on suicide to a traumatised 10 year old. I didn’t know him at all – but by all accounts a good man and someone who will be missed.

@star: I am shocked at the death of Eugene De Bruyn, principal of WSP. I knew him well, College boy from 1978. I only found out today, been in Chunnisbeg the whole week. It’s a real tragedy, I hope the school works through that well. Just tragic …

A current DPHS 1st team player to watch closely is the No 10 – Cade Wolhuter. I would imagine that there is a bunfight of epic proportions over him that is raging as we speak. Natural talent, can kick with both feet, tactical kicking is mint and always seems to choose the correct option.

@star: DHS have only attracted DPHS boys in the past 3 years, give them 2 more years to get back to where they should be. Westville no longer have the DPHS conveyer belt….sorry….

@ Buffel- I watched this Prep team scrap home against a WSPS team that included current Westville 1st team players N.Meilhon, Yuric( now head boy), Warner( captained the team against GW), B.Smith, Bailey,Murphy and Jackson.I think at least 5 of those players made U13 provincial representation My abiding memory was Nathan like a wrecking ball against the Prep D. 5 years later and things have not changed much. I think that is why Pedantic took Grassy to task when he said he had never heard of him.
It is also interesting when looking at the Prep team that none went to DHS. So much for a feeder school. In 2010 DHS were very aggressive in their Prep intake and I think Gungets has filled us in on that story. In stark contrast of the 21 boys in the WSPS 2009 squad, 19 went to Westville Boys. Besides the 7 mentioned, there are 8 in the 2nds to 4ths. Amongst the 4 that gave up rugby is the vice captain J. Bleeker who now represents SA Schools at hockey. Now as a political party reminds us ” that is a good story to tell”.
Also of interest is that Braithwaite the captain of Westville is also a Penzance boy and must have been in the same team as Jason Gouws. I wonder who was the captain of that 1st team

Masikani Mazwi,Jesse Rich and Thabo Ndlela all CW u13 2009. Crockart,Schwegmann and Bryce the ;B’ team and Roberts represented the NATAL ‘C’ side . Of all the 1st team, only 2 did not play representative rugby. That was Jordan and Abrahams. The rest played NATAL CW, B OR C team.

Going to be interesting the conversion rate from u13 CW to u18 CW. Could be as many as 6. I think probably Captain and Vice in 2014.

On current form the KC/MHS game will have 7 ex-prep boys in the starting 30 and could have Faber coming into the mix which will make it 8.

    10 of the 15 playing 1st team shows a good conversion rate…
