@Roger: @Roger: Hi Roger, I was at the U14 game, some good individual U14a players but they didn’t play as a unit. I also think come next game there will be a few changes, there were 5 outstanding B team players that must be considered for the A team. It has the potential of being a strong age group.

@Vleis: yep – you right – just checked that score – KES u15a won 26-9 last year at PBHS and lost this year as U16’s 28-5 at KES

    very weird

You have any reports on the Rondebosch tens day? I know Bishops won the tournament conceding only two tries the entire day and both of those being in the final.

@Vin: They are not a vintage year, but they did beat PBHS u15A by about 20 points last year. So, there has been a 40 point turnaround, which is even greater given that KES played away last year and at home this year.

    Strange :-?

@Vin: That is a very surprising score in the u16A game. What happened there? Has Boys High improved significantly in this age group, or acquired some new players, or has KES declined?

@Andre T: Jy oorreageer darem vreeslik so vroeg in die seisoen. Het jou Cortina se enjin opgepak, of is jy bloot net so n bietjie groen?

I find it very arrogant and degrading when bloggers refer to 2nd and 3rd team players playing in the school’s 1st team specially when defeating the other team by 85 points. When you pull that first XV jumper on you’re representing the first team whether you play 1sts or 5th team normally.

For the record 9 of the other team’s regular 1st team players also couldn’t play because of a gruelling fixture 2 days before but no excuses made. It was such an honour for those boys to play against such a prestige team but to be humiliated and tell them that they’d rather field 2nd and 3rd team against them to avoid a 100 is very naive.

Small town schools struggle a lot with depth and even 1 injury to a team can have a huge effect. If these ‘prestige’ schools are too important to compete the smaller schools then don’t play them at all. Go and play against your own ‘quality’ where your ‘first team players’ can prove themselves.

    Outeniqua vs HTS Drostdy:
Strong 1st half by the Kwaggas, backs impressed with great running lines, speed of execution and silky handling. Standouts were 12, 15 and 9 (Tarentaal), the latter with some awesome opportunism and individual brilliance. Up front 3 (De Necker?) and 5 (Zandberg?) carried strong.

The Donkies rallied strong in the 2nd half with a more direct approach and starved the KwGga backs of front foot ball. Jurie Fick, the Drostdy 7, is a beast ran, tackled and grappled for the entire game, tireless in the 3 games I have seen him play this year.

Early days, not the Kwaggas of 2013, but showed enough in the 1st half that will keep a few opponents awake, again. Also, hats off the Brackenfell HS for such a well organized event, well done manne!

Telling was 38-0.

@Gungets Tuft: Sorry about your mate’s bad planning. The College Reunion weekend could be quite a long hard affair this year; with a dinner on the Thursday night for College’s first ever overseas rugby tour in 1984 (which was to Wales), then golf on Friday followed by a 30 year reunion dinner on the Friday night, then Reunion Day on the Saturday. Bring in on !!!

I am sure Westville will come out firing this week – some mongrel and pace being introduced into the pack will help and the change at centre should also be positive . Looking forward to this game as it will set the tone for the remainder of the season for Westville .

@Woltrui: I did not see the game, so can’t confirm whether the 5 all draw between St Alban’s and PBHS is correct. A Tuks coach (who watched the game) said that St Alban’s looked poor in the beginning but improved a lot later on.

Bear in mind that it was only a practice match (i.e. very stop/start) so I’m not sure how much one can read into it anyway.

Someone told me KES had a smallish team this year – saw the heights and weights of the forwards and backs and they look pretty big to me

both props 104kgs, hooker 92kg and all 183cm or therabouts

    Locks 194cm and and 192cm and 102kgs and 98kgs

    One loosie 194cm and 102kg
    other loosies 90+kgs

fullback, outside centre and right wing all 90+

scrummie, flyhalf and left wing small though

It will be his 70th reunion but unfortunately won’t be there to share it with all the College family. He will be 87 this year in May . His grandson plays for the Kearsney 1st XV . If my father had his way, my brother and I would have followed in his footsteps to College but with the laws of the times,we were banished to Kearsney and enjoyed our years there .

@Amalekite: I assume your comments above were a reply to my post.
Firstly, as long as an injustice continues, IMO, I will not let it go.
Secondly, what I say on this blog should have way less impact on team morale than what happens within the squad and coaching structures of the school.
Thirdly, I know for a fact that these boys did not approach the school.
Your opinion is that these boys deserve their place in the team. I am curious to know what in your opinion, makes them deserve their places.
My opinion is that they need to earn their place ahead of boys who have given their all to the school for the last four years.

I also need to make it clear that I never said the two boys played poorly and I am not blaming the boys. They do not pick themselves. The blame lies with the coaches and admin structures of the school who have handled this whole situation very poorly.
I agree that certain players need to take a long hard look in the mirror. But I also think the coaches need to do the same.

@CRC: Lance still very involved at College, just resigned as the Chairman of the Boarder Parents committee after a good few years at the helm. I know he will be outwardly calm and collected, but also know how proud he will be of his son.

I also hope for a good season, the boys are up for it, they always are. I think that this will be one of the most evenly matched seasons for many years. Everyone talking their teams down but there are no weak teams among those Tier 1, and Northwood, Campbell, DHS (perhaps even Clifton) will shock a few on a day when their stars are lined up. It’s why we love schoolboy rugby.

Interesting note on the College 1st team this year. Justin Gold runs out for the 1sts, having made his way up from the U14D team 4 years ago. His dad (Lance) played for the 1sts in 1981, and his grandfather (TJ) for the 1st team in 1950. Just enjoy that a lot.

That 1981 team would have scared a few people, names like Torlage (x2), Hatting, Coxwell, Walker, Cooper, Glover.

If Westville can’t get back up and motivated for a Highway derby then nothing will. Westville will hit back hard, but the Kearsney team must be a wirey bunch having kept a massive Northwood pack at bay. If Kearsney can hold their own up front they could sneak it at home…

GW to hammer House – 15 points or more.

College to open with a Bang against Northwood, hard to call, but will go with a 15 point plus winning margin

@ Rhino- I honestly do not care about the score so long as our boys respect the privilege of playing for the schools 1ST team and leave it all out on the field of play, Weak and ineffectual tackling does not buy into that ethos. Too often I have witnessed players going through the motions and sometimes running past players(mock attempts). This must not be countenanced and comes down to personal attitude which cannot as Amalekite says be blamed on an ” imported” prop and lock.
Let us now focus on our little brother sitting on the hill and when we do play the mighty Grey let us respect them and us with a performance that goes to the heart of the school.

I think that you have made your stance on the issue of the new boys quite clear by now. By drawing it out the way you are is not going to have any positive effects on team morale. I think it is time to move on and get behind the team.
IMHO these 2 boys deserve their place in the team. They played their hearts out against Glenwood.
Everyone always refers to the HMA. In this case, it has clearly not been contravened and until you know their exact circumstances, I suggest that you back off. It may well be that they approached WBHS. If this is the case, is the school supposed to turn them away?
One cannot blame the missed tackles of their team mates on them. These guys need to take a long hard look in the mirror.
Murphy, Wayne Smith and Bailey will be starting against Kearsney. It appears that Erasmus has still not been cleared to play.
    Go Westville!

The game this Saturday could be one of two things- A Westville side wanting to put things right or damage done and they are in for another hard day at Kearsney. I think the former and we are in for a very entertaining game.

Had a glance at the MHS squad and I think they could be in for a very good season. No glaring weaknesses and a few boys back from last year which always helps but this week is a baptism of fire as they travel to Glenwood for their first official game of the season. Good luck.

Im gonna have a chat with some peeps i know at the school and see what he says too.
It would be dismal to ruin a potentially good season because of such antics and policy. TH should be accountable too for these goings on and i am very pro Trevor but is not good at all these happenings..

@Rhino: This game is going to be very tight. Unfortunately I think the damage done by importing players will not be easily undone, if at all. It was clear to see for anyone not wearing blinkers last Saturday that the team were not playing for each other or the badge. Why the Hudson Park Grade 11s have walked straight into the first team is beyond belief. It’s not their fault but a spell in the 4ths and 3rds, where a lot of last years U16A’s are currently playing, would not have done them any harm. The opportunity to prove themselves would have given them much credibility in the eyes of their team mates, particularly the boys who are in matric above them. It would also have given them an opportunity to get properly fit, which they are not.
The unfortunate injury to last weeks hooker may force the coaches to select players in their correct positions this week which will help. Not sure if Erasmus will be fit this week, but if he is that should also get the balance right in the loose forwards. I also think Murphy deserves a run in the 1st side. He had a good game in the 2nds.
