@Roger: @Roger: Hi Roger, I was at the U14 game, some good individual U14a players but they didn’t play as a unit. I also think come next game there will be a few changes, there were 5 outstanding B team players that must be considered for the A team. It has the potential of being a strong age group.
@Vleis: yep – you right – just checked that score – KES u15a won 26-9 last year at PBHS and lost this year as U16’s 28-5 at KES
very weird
@Vleis: find the U14 result stranger – B’s win by 40 and A’s lose by 1 – go figure
@beet: The score for the Muir vs Port Alfred game was: 45-0 not 38-0, I remember writing it down. Thanks
@Beet
You have any reports on the Rondebosch tens day? I know Bishops won the tournament conceding only two tries the entire day and both of those being in the final.
@Vin: They are not a vintage year, but they did beat PBHS u15A by about 20 points last year. So, there has been a 40 point turnaround, which is even greater given that KES played away last year and at home this year.
Strange
@Vleis: Hi Vleis the KES U16 age group need some work, they’ve battled at U15 level as well.
@Vin: That is a very surprising score in the u16A game. What happened there? Has Boys High improved significantly in this age group, or acquired some new players, or has KES declined?

@Roger: Congratulations Mr Roger. What was the hockey score?
@Pinotage: Hy is gefrustreerd!
@Andre T: Jy oorreageer darem vreeslik so vroeg in die seisoen. Het jou Cortina se enjin opgepak, of is jy bloot net so n bietjie groen?
Chill bietjie ouboet!
@Tandem: @Lindenpa: Double Eish! Scores fixed
Boishaai 62- Punt 0 . The score in your score update not correct Beet.
Beet, the Linden vs St Stithians score above should be the other way round. Linden 20 and Saints 13.
Glenwood 17 – House 13.
Eeisch, close games all round. Going to be a tightly contested season, a penalty here an there decision things. Best I get my ticker checked now or I am going to be looking for CPR at some stage. Karrent be seeing any of the bloggers here stepping up for that…..
St Charles 21 – Hilton 22. Not sure what to read into that …

@BOG: Hiers ek………………..hoekom soek jy my?
Waar is Speartackle, Duppie, Nonnie, Festus–?
Ek dink hy gaan ‘n groot invloed op julle voorspelers he. Groete tot weersiens.
Volgende game Affies teen Helpmekaar Maandag.
Was jy by ons game? Jy moet jouself bietjie kom voorstel volgende keer….
@Andre T: Pistorian Historian wat nog en dalk Pretorian. That will explain a lot.
@BOG: Ek sal my ook nie verbaas as jy dalk n Pistorian is
@Andre T: Hear a pot calling the kettle black. Feite is nie arrogansie nie. We will always tell you how humble we are because you always show us how stupid you are
I put it to you sir, the only schools who do not buy players are those who can not afford to. Oh sorry my lady and those who do not play rugby”.
@Tjoppa: My eie opinie.
Ek dink Oakdale het10-15 punte minder gery as wat hul moes. 2skoppe in begin gemis en heelwat aangee wat nog nie so suiwer was nie. Gaan interesante jaar wees.
@Woltrui: Ouens in glashuisies………………
Voorspoed.
Monnas bewys in hoofletters dat hy ‘n top 5 span gaan wees. Lekker man Lekker.
Welgedaan Blues. Bonus point. Cheetahs nothing.
@Andre T: AMEN AMEN AND AMEN. Blog of the year sir. And why the fuck must they always then TELL us how humble they are??
@Wim1: Ek bedoel Woensdag teen Kempton
@Oakdale supporter: Sjoe daar is n paar groot verlore vir DP.
@Andre T: Het gister gespeel
I find it very arrogant and degrading when bloggers refer to 2nd and 3rd team players playing in the school’s 1st team specially when defeating the other team by 85 points. When you pull that first XV jumper on you’re representing the first team whether you play 1sts or 5th team normally.
For the record 9 of the other team’s regular 1st team players also couldn’t play because of a gruelling fixture 2 days before but no excuses made. It was such an honour for those boys to play against such a prestige team but to be humiliated and tell them that they’d rather field 2nd and 3rd team against them to avoid a 100 is very naive.
Small town schools struggle a lot with depth and even 1 injury to a team can have a huge effect. If these ‘prestige’ schools are too important to compete the smaller schools then don’t play them at all. Go and play against your own ‘quality’ where your ‘first team players’ can prove themselves.
@Pinotage: Good, I hope that perfection comes before the “big” matches. I notice that Vodacom is now the official sponsor of Boishaai (With an OG as CEO) Is Mr Price still the sponsor of GCB? I heard rumours of Canterbury taking over?
Outeniqua vs HTS Drostdy:
Strong 1st half by the Kwaggas, backs impressed with great running lines, speed of execution and silky handling. Standouts were 12, 15 and 9 (Tarentaal), the latter with some awesome opportunism and individual brilliance. Up front 3 (De Necker?) and 5 (Zandberg?) carried strong.
The Donkies rallied strong in the 2nd half with a more direct approach and starved the KwGga backs of front foot ball. Jurie Fick, the Drostdy 7, is a beast ran, tackled and grappled for the entire game, tireless in the 3 games I have seen him play this year.
Early days, not the Kwaggas of 2013, but showed enough in the 1st half that will keep a few opponents awake, again. Also, hats off the Brackenfell HS for such a well organized event, well done manne!
@Roger: That is a good result for St Johns
Jeppe 24 St Johns 18
@BOG: Watched one game on the field behind Brill and 3 on the Main field. The scary part is that there is still room for improvement with all the teams I saw.
Garsfontein vs Marais Viljoen:
U14A Garsfontein 68-3 MV
U15A Garsfontein 52-7 MV
U16A Garsfontein 61-14 MV

GCB U16 45-7 (Menlo)

Good start for the season for the Bulle !
Telling was 38-0.
Valke. Good win, EG played the Rooibulle of the field the most of the game, I just hope this is an eye opener for the Rooibul coaches.
@Pinotage: The programme is on GCBs FB page
@Pedantic:
Just a bit of frustration on my part. Sorry Beet, and thank you for including this fixture!
@Gungets Tuft: Sorry about your mate’s bad planning. The College Reunion weekend could be quite a long hard affair this year; with a dinner on the Thursday night for College’s first ever overseas rugby tour in 1984 (which was to Wales), then golf on Friday followed by a 30 year reunion dinner on the Friday night, then Reunion Day on the Saturday. Bring in on !!!
@Buffel: As a youngster living in Kloof to get around the zoning and into Merchiston and then College I remember using my grandparent’s farm address. It was quite funny when I could not remember all the details, like their P O Box address etc.
@Lindenpa: I think beet has a day job too, so we have to excuse his tardiness
Fixture is there now.
It seems you are wasting your time trying to put your school’s fixture on here if it hadn’t been included initially. I have sent an email and was told it will be included, to no avail.
In any event, Linden is playing St Stithians on Saturday 22 March at Saints.
Hi Beet,
EG won 38-26 yesterday.
@Amalekite: The changes look positive ! I was a little surprised that Thomas kept his spot this week after being pulled so early last week but best of luck to all the boys from both teams .
@old timer: going to be a good one.
I am sure Westville will come out firing this week – some mongrel and pace being introduced into the pack will help and the change at centre should also be positive . Looking forward to this game as it will set the tone for the remainder of the season for Westville .
@Vleis: @Bulle: Thanks!
@Roger: KES by three in the hockey!! No ways!! You are not playing Glenwood Boet (Hiehiehie)
@Vleis: true true – we never had big packs in the past but always had very pacy backlines – hopefully the 2014 team is in the same vein
good luck
@Woltrui: I did not see the game, so can’t confirm whether the 5 all draw between St Alban’s and PBHS is correct. A Tuks coach (who watched the game) said that St Alban’s looked poor in the beginning but improved a lot later on.
Bear in mind that it was only a practice match (i.e. very stop/start) so I’m not sure how much one can read into it anyway.
@Roger: Yep, that is definitely small these days, as that pack is not much bigger than some u15 packs. That said, KES have often had small, but mobile, packs….and have performed pretty well in the past. 8)
@Pinotage: You are correct, according to Menlo’s website they do play Grey on Friday.
@Woltrui: Affies and Helpmekaar will play the 24th.
@Woltrui: at KES I will stick my neck out and say KES by 7 and hockey KES by 3.
Someone told me KES had a smallish team this year – saw the heights and weights of the forwards and backs and they look pretty big to me
both props 104kgs, hooker 92kg and all 183cm or therabouts
Locks 194cm and and 192cm and 102kgs and 98kgs
One loosie 194cm and 102kg
other loosies 90+kgs
fullback, outside centre and right wing all 90+
scrummie, flyhalf and left wing small though
is that regarded as small these days – yeeesh
GreyBloem vs Menlopark: 21/3/2014
My info is that GCB will play Menlopark on Friday 21/3/2014 at the Grey/Kovsie sportsday. Menlopark and Duineveld will both take part to accommodate all the teams.
If I am wrong, please correct me so that I can change my plans.
@Buffel: Ahh I see.
@Playa: Nothing mysterious . The zoning of the times were that you either lived in pmb or were a farmer’s son and that allowed you into the B.E. We had a small holding in the Berg and used that address but the head at the time was well aware of this and could not be hoodwinked into believing that we were farming folk.
@Buffel: You have me very curious as to what the ‘laws of the time’ were and the banishment thereof.
@Buffel: Very sorry to hear that mate. I will also miss the Reunion this year, mates have their 25th Wedding annivesary … {sign} .. the oke was my BestMan, so I guess he deserves our company.
At last years Reunion Dinner (what I remember of it) I sat next to the oldest Collegian at the dinner, I think he matriculated in 1946 or something, must be close to your dad in that regard. My Father-in-law (he died in 1988) left College in 1947 (his older boet in 1945), your dad and my F-I-L would have been about the same time.
Drop me a mail to gungetstuft(at)gmail – I have an idea for your dad …
@Gungets Tuft: On a more sombre note, my father,a college old boy and captain of the 1st XV in 1944 ,is not in good shape. It will be his 70th reunion but unfortunately won’t be there to share it with all the College family. He will be 87 this year in May . His grandson plays for the Kearsney 1st XV . If my father had his way, my brother and I would have followed in his footsteps to College but with the laws of the times,we were banished to Kearsney and enjoyed our years there .
Good luck this Friday. Keep the ball moving around and you should be victorious.
@Gungets Tuft: Are you going to be at College? Should be a good game.
KES vs Pretoria Boys High…. bragging rights for the best English Boys school in Gauteng. Cmonn Pretoria Boys!!! Boys High to take the rugga by 8 and to win the hockey with at least 2 clear goals. Roger??
Heard Pta Boys High and St Alban’s played to a 5 all draw last weekend. Maybe Vleis got some info in this regard??
Menlopark and Noord Kaap, Affies and Helpmekaar (game postponed till the 23 or 24?) the other interesting games coming up.
Big match in the Tuks reeks between Jansies and HTS Middelburg. Can’t wait to get the updates from this heavy weight fixture. 8)
@Amalekite: I assume your comments above were a reply to my post.
Firstly, as long as an injustice continues, IMO, I will not let it go.
Secondly, what I say on this blog should have way less impact on team morale than what happens within the squad and coaching structures of the school.
Thirdly, I know for a fact that these boys did not approach the school.
Your opinion is that these boys deserve their place in the team. I am curious to know what in your opinion, makes them deserve their places.
My opinion is that they need to earn their place ahead of boys who have given their all to the school for the last four years.
I also need to make it clear that I never said the two boys played poorly and I am not blaming the boys. They do not pick themselves. The blame lies with the coaches and admin structures of the school who have handled this whole situation very poorly.
I agree that certain players need to take a long hard look in the mirror. But I also think the coaches need to do the same.
The KZN bloggers are taking over here really.. Why is all Affies games being cancelled? Menlopark cancelled and now Helpmekaar as well.
@CRC: Lance still very involved at College, just resigned as the Chairman of the Boarder Parents committee after a good few years at the helm. I know he will be outwardly calm and collected, but also know how proud he will be of his son.
I also hope for a good season, the boys are up for it, they always are. I think that this will be one of the most evenly matched seasons for many years. Everyone talking their teams down but there are no weak teams among those Tier 1, and Northwood, Campbell, DHS (perhaps even Clifton) will shock a few on a day when their stars are lined up. It’s why we love schoolboy rugby.
@Gungets Tuft: Good luck to College, I hope it is going to be a good season. Fantastic for the gold family having a 3rd generation 1st team player. I remember Lance well, a committed and very good prop.
Interesting note on the College 1st team this year. Justin Gold runs out for the 1sts, having made his way up from the U14D team 4 years ago. His dad (Lance) played for the 1sts in 1981, and his grandfather (TJ) for the 1st team in 1950. Just enjoy that a lot.
That 1981 team would have scared a few people, names like Torlage (x2), Hatting, Coxwell, Walker, Cooper, Glover.
Westville to win by 12.
@BOG haha show off ..lol – Im sure we will do ourselves proud !
If Westville can’t get back up and motivated for a Highway derby then nothing will. Westville will hit back hard, but the Kearsney team must be a wirey bunch having kept a massive Northwood pack at bay. If Kearsney can hold their own up front they could sneak it at home…
Will be fully behind KC, but will predict a Westville win around 5 points.
GW to hammer House – 15 points or more.
College to open with a Bang against Northwood, hard to call, but will go with a 15 point plus winning margin
Will be very interesting to see what happens this weekend
@Greenwood: Going to be close. Not that margin. @meadows: good luck.hope you surprise us all and do one over the hoppers.
@ Meadows- 2 years ago MHS also travelled to GW for their opening game and lost by a single point. Keep the faith.
A tough ask of MHS to travel to Glenwood for their opening game!
Westers – Westville by 10-12 They will come out firing after the Gwd game I see a backlash from Westville – I still don’t think Westville played that badly – just that Glenwood were super fired up last Saturday
@Rhino: Dont worry too much. I am told that the team which played against Klerksdorp, were mainly Cherrie and Peaches players- 2nd and 3rds. By the time they clash with Westville, they should be at full strength, hopefully to revenge what happened in the swimming pool
@star: Thanks for the reference. Looking forward to this weeks game . There are going to be plenty of people watching as it is Kearsney’s open day and we have a point to prove. Age group rugby we have yet to beat Westville and a win will go a long way to setting up a useful season.
See you guys there.
@ Rhino- I honestly do not care about the score so long as our boys respect the privilege of playing for the schools 1ST team and leave it all out on the field of play, Weak and ineffectual tackling does not buy into that ethos. Too often I have witnessed players going through the motions and sometimes running past players(mock attempts). This must not be countenanced and comes down to personal attitude which cannot as Amalekite says be blamed on an ” imported” prop and lock.
Let us now focus on our little brother sitting on the hill and when we do play the mighty Grey let us respect them and us with a performance that goes to the heart of the school.
Hi Beet,
Bellville will be playing Milnerton and Drostdy against Outeniqua at the Brackenfell S.D
I think that you have made your stance on the issue of the new boys quite clear by now. By drawing it out the way you are is not going to have any positive effects on team morale. I think it is time to move on and get behind the team.
IMHO these 2 boys deserve their place in the team. They played their hearts out against Glenwood.
Everyone always refers to the HMA. In this case, it has clearly not been contravened and until you know their exact circumstances, I suggest that you back off. It may well be that they approached WBHS. If this is the case, is the school supposed to turn them away?
One cannot blame the missed tackles of their team mates on them. These guys need to take a long hard look in the mirror.
Murphy, Wayne Smith and Bailey will be starting against Kearsney. It appears that Erasmus has still not been cleared to play.
Go Westville!
At last, the Oakdale season is starting on Friday. The team surely would like to start the season better than last year, where they lost to Daniel Pienaar in an away game. I will post the scores as the day goes on.
George Campbell vs DHS today, we shall see how that game turns out
The game this Saturday could be one of two things- A Westville side wanting to put things right or damage done and they are in for another hard day at Kearsney. I think the former and we are in for a very entertaining game.
Had a glance at the MHS squad and I think they could be in for a very good season. No glaring weaknesses and a few boys back from last year which always helps but this week is a baptism of fire as they travel to Glenwood for their first official game of the season. Good luck.
@Westers
Thanks for the info. Its not at all good hearing this though and i fully understand your concern and annoyance.
Im gonna have a chat with some peeps i know at the school and see what he says too.
It would be dismal to ruin a potentially good season because of such antics and policy. TH should be accountable too for these goings on and i am very pro Trevor but is not good at all these happenings..
My mates were whatsapping me from the game and just said to me Ryan you would not like what we seeing here at the moment. just way off GW, constant missed and bad tackles and all…
Ah well we have faith yet..
@Rhino: This game is going to be very tight. Unfortunately I think the damage done by importing players will not be easily undone, if at all. It was clear to see for anyone not wearing blinkers last Saturday that the team were not playing for each other or the badge. Why the Hudson Park Grade 11s have walked straight into the first team is beyond belief. It’s not their fault but a spell in the 4ths and 3rds, where a lot of last years U16A’s are currently playing, would not have done them any harm. The opportunity to prove themselves would have given them much credibility in the eyes of their team mates, particularly the boys who are in matric above them. It would also have given them an opportunity to get properly fit, which they are not.
The unfortunate injury to last weeks hooker may force the coaches to select players in their correct positions this week which will help. Not sure if Erasmus will be fit this week, but if he is that should also get the balance right in the loose forwards. I also think Murphy deserves a run in the 1st side. He had a good game in the 2nds.
Eish .. Grey College looking powerful… Westville better get there A game sorted and fast to avoid such scores….
Reckon this game v Kearsney will be a close game just hope they select the right team and start producing..
