Grey College names a strong team to face Potch Gim

Grey College has named a very strong line-up to take on Potchefstroom Gymnasium at the Fichardtpark Rugby Day in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 08 March. The team includes the very highly rated players Ruben Terblanche, Alex Jonker and Henry Immelman as well as livewires  like De Wet Bezuidenhout, Michael Andrade and Julian Jordaan. Dian the son of Free State legend Chris Badenhorst is part of the 1st XV group for the second season running. Immelman, Pretorius and Botha who also have 2013 1st XV experience, are amongst the young brothers of players who have stood out for Grey in the recent past.

Grey College Head Coach Wessel du Plessis has stated that the days of one team dominating the national school rugby scene annually as Grey College had done up until 2011, are now well in the past. Other schools have upped their game. This said, Grey was still one of the top rugby schools in South Africa in 2012 and 2013 and are expected to either be on top or somewhere near the summit again this year.

@jakes…this Potch Gim vs Grey game and most other of this nature, is far beyond your macro school mentality…these schools offer competition across 30odd teams in various sporting codes…something your average macro school cant do in a month of sundays…

@Koos Roos: Just on that note, can you please remind me for last year – did the PRG U16A beat Grey Bloem’s U16A last year? I cant remember the outcome of that game.

@Koss Ross: The poor lad could not believe what he was seeing those Cherries were sublime, agree its too early predict but if those Cherries from last year are in the 1st team its hard betting against them. Paul Ross had a strong u16 team last year aswell last year

I think its good that Grey is now playing some other schools and not only the big boys schools in the country.

@BOG: Yes correct sir the jersey should be black. Beet is mistaken. The green stripes are however correct.

i am a new blogger here but have been following this blog for almost 2 years now or so. i think Grey Bloem will have an unbeaten season purely based on the fact that the majority of the team is made up of the 2013 Cherries. Goodness me i watched those boys against Selborne in East London last year April. It was like having an orgasm. The best 2nd team i have ever seen in my entire life at school level and the 2nd best rugby team i have ever seen after the 2007 Grey Bloem 1st team. A friend of mine could not believe what he saw he said those Cherries were not real kids and that they were made at a Science Lab

@ Ouduppie. I am sure that will not be the only game to be cancelled for this weekend. The rain has not stopped falling. Some fields will not be able to be played on and other teams would not want to play in the rain or are not prepared after the last 2 weeks continuous rain..

Noordwes- I am sure Potch gym would have been prepared for this game well in advance. They would not take this game as a normal warm up game.It will be great to see them performing in the macro schools division again and the Tuks super 16..

@jakes: They asked Potch Gim to play because they could not get someone to play against Grey at the rugbyday.Grey will win with ease.Last year Potch Gim won against Rustnburg and KHS with more than 50 points.

Unfortunately the Grey vs Garsfontein game is off. Garsfontein withdrew – due to all the rain up north they could not train all week and have not even finished their trials.

FNB CC list is out already but I don’t think they have confirmed which games will be televised yet.

Wilderklawer Day 1 will be broadcast live

If its 3 am in SA, it might be 9 am elsewhere. But although I am far from Bloem, Im always excited about Grey- even the bad years@Mike: Did you see that the dates for the Grey vs Grey fixture, has changed?@OudUppie: Where is that match taking place? Bloem or Pretoria and do you have a time?

@DC ARMY: Julian is the nephew of Paul and Pieter. He plaid a few games for the first team last year at fly half and centre, but then decided to move to scrumhalf and ended up playing for the fourth or fifth team. Apparently he started the trails at scrumhalf again this year, but likely has now moved to centre (in my opinion by far his best position) and I really think his going be a threat there.
Another interesting game this weekend is between Grey College and Garsfontein u16. I believe Garsfontein will be no pushover.

@jakes: That is the way to ensure top gradings for the year. Play a lot of games during the year with a fairly high percentage of those against weaker teams. Get BHP on your side a viola no 1 in RSA.

Why Potch Gim against Grey college?? Will Potch Gim have a stronger team than usual this year and be able to compete against Grey? They do not even play or qualify in the Tuks super 16 or am I missing something here?? I do not know their rugby very well but I know they would have not be able to match Grey College in the last few years..

Alex Jonker, Julian Jordaan and Henry Immelmann will be stand out players this year for Grey. Many close, tough battles between PE and Bloem and certainly Jordaan was always the difference when Bloem won in this age group.

Six of the front eight, where the game is won or lost in my opinion, has provincial honours!! Must be a Mother of a team!! Good luck to the Grey boitjies’s opposition-you might need it 8-O
Don’t want to differ with their coach but I think Grey Bloem is still by FAR the best rugga school in the country, or rather make that the world.
