KZN looking for a new Craven Week forwards coach

The departure of coach Sean Erasmus from Glenwood to Paarl Boys High will leave the KwaZulu-Natal under-18 Craven Week team with a vacancy at forwards coach.

The clear cut criteria for selection of a new assistant coach has been provided by the KZNRU High Schools’ Association:

1. The coach must be a full time employee at a school.
2. The KZNRU HSA has made appointments for 2014 so logic is that the new assistant coach will come from that pool.
3. A new coach from our 2013 applications will be appointed to fill a gap that may be left (as a result of another coach being promotion to fill the Craven Week position).
4. The KZNRU HSA will keep succession in mind for 2015.

As things stand the KZN coaching set up for 2014 is as follows:

TEAM OFFICIALS:
CRAVEN WEEK
Coach Barend Steyn Kearsney
Assistant Coach
Assistant Coach Grant Bell Westville
Manager Dean Moodley Kearsney
Physio TBA
ACADEMY WEEK
Coach Rudi Dames Glenwood
Assistant Coach Antonie Prinsloo George Campbell
Assistant Coach Roland Norris Westville
Manager Nhlanhla Bulose Northwood
Physio TBA
KZN COUNTRY DISTRICTS
Coach Deon Gericke St Charles
Assistant Coach Ryan Kyle Creston College
Manager Lukhanyo Nontshinga George Campbell
Medic Musa Mgabhi Umlazi Com Tech
GRANT KHOMO
Coach Francois Lubbe Kearsney
Assistant Coach Jeremy McLaren Kloof
Assistant Coach Torsten Sorensen Westville
Manager Sibusiso Ncamane Michaelhouse
Physio TBA

St Charles coach Deon Gericke is looks like he may be a strong candidate for the post.

Another coach who should be considered is underrated Antonie Prinsloo who has done outstanding work at George Campbell

Maritzburg College’s Ryan Strudwick with his recent exposure at provincial under-19 and club rugby would be someone to consider to fill a position made available lower down by the promotion process IF:

a) he meets the definition of a “full time employee” in accordance with criteria pt.1
b) he applied for a position in 2013 in accordance with criteria pt.3

Finally, it’s a pity about the timing because a full time teacher about join Westville is Dean Carelse. This highly rated  coach was in charge of the Grey High 1st team for a few years. However in terms of the criteria he will not only be ineligible for this Craven Week forwards coach position but any lower team position that becomes available as well. Based on what he could bring to the table, it might be worth the KZNRU High Schools’ Association’s while to bend the rules and slot him straight into one of the lower teams coaching set-ups.

@HM: No one really. This is my assumption. Barend is head coach, Grant takes the backs and Sean looks after the forwards. So with Sean leaving it seemed like a forwards coach was on the cards. But I guess this need not apply. The KZNRU HSA could quite easily go for best fit. Both Barend and Grant are head coaches and have a good understanding of the complete package.

Previously there were only two coaches per KZN team. At the end of this season I think it was Noel Ingle, the chairman who came up with the idea that extra coaches would benefit the teams and so now every team has a head coach as well as two assistants. So my assumption was that the 2 assistants would be specialists to a degree.

It they pick a “backline” coach man will I look like a tit

@beet: I stand to be corrected but Steyn was the forwards coach and Erasmus the backs coach? Who indicated that specifically a forward coach was needed?

section of the “Bunny Chow” cup They even played at Woodburn in Pmb
not that far from College – used to play Western Transvaal , Eastern Transvaal and used to get the odd klap or three from these teams

Oh for the good old bad days !!!

Our very own underrated Antonie Prinsloo will be my man, his done very well with George Campbell. I personally highly rate the guy and I feel he’ll do pretty well if appointed as the forwards coach.

@meadows: Steve you reminded me of some more of Wahl’s great attributes. His ability to hold onto the ball no matter what or to take it off another player. Back then there were more upright mauls than nowadays and Wahl used to thrive in those situations.

I even believe that the famous Shark in the Sharks badge which must have started out in about 1995-96 was designed based Wahl’s ballcarrying posture.

@Roger: That school that Spear is talking about, was where Mike Schutte went to. He was Dux in gr. 10.And the crowds drawn there, were for reasons other than rugby. Ask Spear about his red Cortina, 3000 with the lime fur on the dash board (And his Porra mother-in-law)

    @Speartackle:
On the Bartmanns – Wahl and Leon both played SA Schools – in 1981 and 1978 respectively.
Another guy from that era who you wanted to avoid on the rugby field (or anywhere else for that matter!) was the Roodepoort and Transvaal lock Calla Botha who played about 3 years Craven Week and SA Schools in ’79. In general the players today are bigger but there were some prime specimens in those days as well

@star: You are correct china…………and a big ‘komposhoop’ on the pavement…………..just like GW

Most of the action used to be on that ‘komposhoop’ on Friday and Saturday nights………………not nearly as bad as Obies. I think I told you the story that in the old days when policemen caused kak at their respective stations they got transferred to Obies as punishment. Rumour has it that Brian McMillan was quite a regular in Obies during his high school years.

@Speartackle: Yeah the good old days. I grew up on the Bluff in Durban with 2 big Afrikaans schools with over 1000 kids each, Andries Pretorius and Dirkie Uys, those two schools combined would have produced a great 1st team…..both gone now….

@meadows: Those were the good days, the whole town went to watch these games. The pro era killed schools like Tom Naude, Stoffberg, Hugenote, Potch Volkies and most other smaller schools.

I could have made up a great first XV this year at a Klerksdorp school from the players that left for Krugersdorp, Bloemfontein, Pta after primary school. Those days you went to the nearest high school unless your aunt or granny went to Grey

    The schools rugby landscape when the Bartmann’s were at Florida was a very different one from today as these Adminstrators Trophy results from that decade show;

    1971: HTS Tom Naudé
    1972: Nelspruit / Affies (draw)
    1973: Delmas
    1974: HTS John Vorster
    1975: Nelspruit / Helpmekaar3 (draw)
    1976: Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom
    1977: Stoffberg (Brakpan)
    1978: Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool
    1979: Monument
1980: Monument / HSS Hugenote (Springs)
1981: Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool / HTS Tom Naudé

@beet: He was a bit slow for how the game developed BUT he was bloody strong and very effective as a ball carrier and in the free for all that the breakdown was at that time.

A mate of mine who played with him at Tvl was fond of saying that Wahl had no time for gym work and was poor at it – but if he managed to get his finger on the ball in the loose it was his.

@Speartackle: Francois, Leon and Wahl all played for Transvaal.

Francois was a tighthead and Leon and Wahl flankers. All three played in the 1983 Lion Cup final at Ellis park – Tvl lost to OFS

Wahl Bartmann was a little slow and when international rugby restarted, he showed a lack of disciple at the rucks but boy was he one the strongest guys on his feet – a very difficult player to bring down. Did a great job for Natal after leaving Transvaal.

I also remember that incident he had with Christo Ferreira the Bulls scrumhalf.

@Grasshopper: I’m sure that SpearT will know Wahl Bartmann personally, as they are roughly the same age…plus Wahl went to the main rugby rival of Monnas in the West Rand – i.e. Florida. 8)

Dont know why the name had to be changed to KZN. It sounds so soft, so timid. Like a sightseeing tour agency or a Dutch oompah band. Natal sounded more rough and tough………….when I say the word Natal………..I immediately think of Vleis Visagie, Steve Atherton, Rob Hankinson, Lood Muller, Craig Jamieson, Cabous……………………..but the word KZN………..sounds so much like Darren Scott, Helen Zille, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Bobby van Jaarsveld
