Ruan Potgieter in hunt for SA Schools

Ruan Potgieter, Ruan Potgieterns Craven Week Flyhalf, will be in the hunt for the SA Schools no 10 jersey when participating in this year’s Craven Week in Polokwane.

Potgieter, now in Grade 12 at Dr.EG Jansen in Boksburg, will be attending his second craven week this year, as he was also the flyhalf in last year’s competition at only 16 years old, and ending at 6th overall on most points scored in the tournament.

Article by Rynand Weyers

He also played in every provincial youth tournament since grade 6, namely Under 13 Craven Week, Grant Khomo etc. Ruan attended numerous Investec Courses to help him better all his skills, and was selected in two overseas tours to France in a combined SA team, as well as a UK Barbarian Tour selected by Boots and All.

Ruan is an explosive player with ball in hand, and is very solid when it comes to defence. He is also very reliable when needed to kick the ball, may it be out of hand or punting it through the uprights. All this makes him a proper flyhalf which gives him the edge in any team he plays. At this year’s Kearsney Festival, he stood out with his decision making skills, and had the crowd on their feet every time he touched the ball.

Be sure to keep an eye on him when the Craven week kicks off on 8 July, as this youngster has a bright future in SA Rugby!

Great signing for the Free State Cheetahs well done Meneer Tredoux as for Ernst Stapelberg it looks like he has decided to join EW Viljoen in the cape.

@Queenian: I do not agree on Stapelberg. He kicks well – place and line kicks – and defensively secure , but his decision making on the field is poor at times. Although he does well, I do think there a a few more ahead of him in the running here after Potgieter and Human

Ye agree Stapelberg must be considered although he tends to be very selfish as a player but Potgieter must stand a good chance.

@Dave: You need two flyhalves in a squad so maybe both, but Ernst Stapelberg from Framesby (I think his name is) would be a contender too…

@Grasshopper: Personally I would play Human as the stand-in flyhalf on fullback. Human is exceptional but does lack on size, but his full package could make up for this. Makes you think of Gio Aplon, were size really does not matter

Watched him at the Kearsney festival, had him as my tournament flyhalf ahead of Dewald Human of Outeniqua. Dewald is great but lacks size so will end up on the wing or at fullback. Ruan has it all, well balanced player. I hope he stays injury free and makes SA schools. Does anyone know if the EG Jansen lock Estiaan Enslin made any CW or Academy side? He was the third best lock at Kearsney behind Schinkerling and Zandberg..

Excellent player with a great future ahead . I will be surprised if he does not get the no 10 jersey for SA Schools.
