Major hurdles await SA’s two leading unbeaten schoolboy rugby teams Grey Bloem and Paul Roos this weekend and if they clear them, they move one step closer to a national championship deciding match in Bloemfontein on 18 August 2018.
It just seems like a rare occasion that a Grey College versus Paul Roos season ending game in Bloem goes down without some sort of drama surrounding the officiating. Last time out it was the Old Grey ref and his crucial decisions at the death which sparked unhappiness. Grey folks will correctly highlight that the appointing of an official is beyond their control, but at the end of the day, it comes across that their school’s reputation takes the big knock when doubt gets cast over the referee and how difficult it is to win on the main field alongside Jock Meiring Street because of the official in charge. Perhaps now is a good time for both schools to get together and agree to do whatever is within their power to ensure that a top official without any sort of link to either school handles what is still on course to being the 2018 “National Championship” game.
