Virsekerbeker (formerly Beeldtrofee) matches on Kyknet

It’s being reported on SchoolofRugby that Kyknet will be broadcasting several games including those involving smaller schools participating in the Virsekerbeker.

Insurance sector company Virseker has officially replaced the Beeld newspaper as the sole title sponsors of the Noordvaal schoolboy rugby cup competition. The competition is almost 100 years old and easily the oldest school rugby contest in South Africa.

This broadcasting announcement amounts to a second big rugby exposure break in quick succession for Noordvaal’s mainly Co-ed school rugby base, who have in the past often found themselves left out of the higher profile school rugby broadcasting arrangements. Earlier this week Cape based SchoolSportLive announced that they would livestream the Noord-Suid Rugbytoernooi, a festival which includes powerhouse Gauteng Co-eds EG Jansen, Garsfontein, Menlopark and Waterkloof taking on top Western Cape schools.

Gents, His name is Ntando Mahlangu and he won a Silver medal at the Paralympics last year for the 200m in the double amputee section while he was still 14 and less than four years after he got his first prostetics. He already is a superstar.

I found this Facebook video of the Affies u15 disabled athlete in action

    https://www.facebook.com/Affies.Klub600/videos/10154743623411352/

Following some of the news feeds it seems like he’s on track to becoming an international star one day.

I see the rumor monger and hearsay philosophy is still going strong. Schools gets consulted about their fixtures beforehand and given a prelim fixture list and asked for input. Only if there is real viable reasons like double fixtures etc will the hosts change the original setup. There is genuinely no conspiracy at work here.

I think at most festivals you have your beggars and your choosers.

If I was Cassie at Wildeklawer I would finalise my 1st XV fixtures for the next Wildeklawer on 02 May every year (day after the tournament ends). He already has his work cut-out trying to make sure all the traditional annual interschools matches are taken into account and if he waits too long, there’s the headache of avoiding Easter holiday festival match duplications as well.\

If one looks at WK, you rarely ever see a traditional top ranked school taking on two “difficult” games – it’s usually one challenging game and one game you’d expect them to win hands down but I do borrow from what Hooit says that you don’t have to play the previous year’s Top 5 to find yourself involved in a battle galore. For example last season the likes of Diamantveld and Welkom Gim (WK Invitation XV) were not pushovers.

Klink maklik. Sal hoor of hul nog so 3 top 5 spanne kan inpas.

@McCulleys Workshop: No staggering, u14-u16 a-d play u14-u16 a-d of opponents, 1st-6th (7th for big schools) play 1st-6th of opponents. In the opens we generally do well, in the age groups we sometimes take some heavy beatings, especially c-d teams. But we keep coming back for more and many c-d team age group players have ended up in the 1sts at open division a few years later, and reversed results as well. Two or three of this year’s team in fact played mostly b’s through the age groups and will in all probability get CW or Academy colors. At Boland the boys will play bar broken limbs or near-death illness and even then the injured will carry water bottles or run the line for their mates.

@Beet…The Bulls have not signed that many AHS players the last couple of years.
Granted the Bulls would want to keep all good relations in tact with its schools.
It would be great for SBR if one could have the ALL local schools participating at all levels.
However this is but a cloud castle for many.
The solution is simple but again decision making takes us down the obstacle coarse.

@beet: I don’t have problem with Affies joining later and it will be good for Bulls rugby. My suggestion however would be for them to play the respective teams (all age groups) that ended fourth in Pretoria in order to qualify for Virseker playoffs.

@Wonder: the only thing to consider is do the Bulls want to upset Affies unnecessarily? Promising Bulls region players are fair game for recruiters from other Unions. The last thing the Bulls want is for the Lions or WP to gain a strong foothold at one of their leading feeder schools.

Looking at the Affies 3rd term schedule for 2017 they are well placed to make a switch to the Virseker playoffs in future seasons if Doc P ‘s successor one day wants to go that route. But will the other Macro schools permit them to skip league matches during the 2nd term when they play the bulk of their interschools games?

This is the best news I have heard so far. Those schools who can never get a classic clash can now at long last get some exposure.
