Boksmart forces Glenwood to turn to cricket

Glenwood’s annual Old Boys versus Schoolboys game for the James Dwyer* Memorial Cup will be played at Glenwood on Tuesday afternoon, 25 September from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. It will now be contested in the form of a T20 cricket match instead of a rugby match because of BokSmart regulations relating safety in rugby that basically prohibits matches between school students and adults.

Kearsney has been faced with a similar challenge. Their long standing Old Crocks vs the 1st XV rugby match was scrapped this year and a steering committee is set to meet next week to decide on a suitable replacement activity.

*James Dwyer was a third generation Glenwood pupil who last his life tragically in Afghanistan whilst serving in the British Armed Forces

    @Griffon: Very good for him as he was signed with NMMU for Varsity Cup and then the EP pulled him in. He is really doing very well down in PE.

    @All Black:
    the order was Clifton,Hilton then DHS.

    on the general i”d just like to congratulate all those who made kzn water polo(barring u16 which hasnt been chosen yet) from all schools. the DHS boys did very well with 11 KZN players and another who couldnt make KZN as hes been chosen for SA U18. also well done to the u14s who produced 5 out of `13 boys in the team, second only to Clifton who had 6.

    With regard to the article, Greenblooded was 100% correct. My first reaction was would Tom play for the Old Boys or is he too old? :mrgreen: Only joking. T20 against old boys is a good idea. College have just had their annual old boys vs 1st team fixture. Won by the old boys I must add. Jame Bryant who was destined for the Proteas got a century after escaping a lucky decision when in single figures but the old boys will take it and run.

    Hi All. At the recent T20, which I think was used for some of these rankings, the games were all pretty close. The College vs Affies game was all over with College on 80 for 1 chasing 109 with 7 overs still to play. Their spinners then came on and turned the game on its head giving Affies a close fought victory. I think you will find all the top teams can beat each other on any given day. That is cricket, especially T20. Didnt rate the PBHS side as highly as this but have not seen enough of them. Couple of injuries at College for the Michaelmas week though. Not sure of other KZN Schools going other than Hilton who were also at St Davids with a weakened team.

    @ all : I was watching the ep u21 game just now, and saw that Westville Old boy Dwayne Kelly was playing for them. Still a class player. I think this was a good move for him, it might get him some super rugby action next year

    Waterkloof has always been strong. Even when I coached at KES and had one of the top sides in SA, the games against Waterkloof were always close. My mate Rigardt coaches that Waterkloof side. I umpired their games last year against Westville 15A and Glenwood 15A, they beat both schools with like 25 overs to spare. Their ability to swing the ball both ways makes them dangerous. Last year they did not miss the stumps (in terms of run outs). It should be a great game.

    @Horsefly, all the records seem to point to Compton as a Hilton Old Boy. Was he at DHS for a couple of years or DPHS?

    @Roger, welcome old mate. I have missed our heated debates. As for cricket, Glenwood have been in the top 3 in KZN for a few years now. One could argue that Glenwood were the strongest in KZN in 2010/2011 with Westville a close 2nd and College 3rd. However, taking into consideration the last 100 years then DHS are tops with College 2nd. Glenwood have produced 3 x SA Schools players recently Prenelan Subrayen (2011 – Captain), Sahil Bissoon and Sumanth Sunkari in 2010. Subrayen was man of the match agains England for the SA Under 19’s. As for Boks/Protea’s we have produced a handful;

    1935 – RJ Williams
    1948 – LA Markham
    1949 to 1957 – JC Watkins
    1989 – Trevor Madsen
    1994 to 1995 – Steven Jack

    Jade Dernbach for England was also at Glenwood for 2 years. Our cricket has been OK over the years but not in the same league as KES, College or DHS…BUT improving steadily…

    @ Beet – Affies cricket has come on in leaps and bounds – it is a very big focus for them. In the past they would not have got close to KES and PBHS – these days they win more than they lose. If we had to take ten years of results into consideration I think this list would be very different. I remember reading a Nuffield week brochure which listed the most SA Schools cricketers prodcued and DHS was number 1, KES number 2 with Rondebosch, Queens etc all featuring. Would like to see that list now – Affies and Grey College would be up there

    @Roger: I saw that list. Interesting. I don’t know why I expected English schools to dominate cricket but I was surprised to see Affies at no.1.

    5 Gauteng schools on the top 10.
