Andre T’s 3rd Annual WRAAs

Okay here’s a bit of lighthearted stuff compliments of serial blogger Andre T who didn’t forget his KZN (KXN) blogging friends.

At the end of every schoolboy rugby season, Andre complies his mostly humorous award ceremony for the benefit of the SBR bloggers. Aside from the wit (and digs), the Krugersdorper also finds time to put his keen eye for spotting talent on the SBR field to good use, giving an interesting indicator of who some of the young achievers on the fields were this season.

Warning: please don’t take this too seriously.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the glorious new conference facilities here at the Bob van Reenen Staduim in the heart of Krugersdorp for the 3rd edition of the West Rand Achievers Awards gala dinner.  We are here to acknowledge and award the best moments and achievers of the 2012 schoolboy rugby season.  There is a carnaval atmosphere here, guests are already seated and the panel of judges, Affiepa, Speartackle, Nonnie, Bekommerd and myself are ready to rumble.  This year will be split into 2 sessions with the serious rugby awards being announced first with Team of the Year and Player of the Year just before the break and then after a short break, where dancing girls will be performing, the less serious Blogger awards.

    @Grasshopper: Eeeisch. There is no sadness like it. I am good friends with 2 families that have lost sons, one of whom we were with when he died during life saving training, the other knocked down while cycling. We also had a paddle out for the lifesaving kid (I think all the clubs in Durban turned up), it is as emotional as you can believe and still gives me a real jolt when reminded. As a parent I am not sure how you deal with it.

    College lost a kid last year, collapsed and died during the week after a Pretoria sports tour. The whole school was affected at the time and on the anniversary this year. Sterkte.

    My condolences go out to Sakhile’s family and the Glenwood family, a tragic loss. It reminds me of the time back in 1995 (I think) when a young surfer was killed outside of Glenwood when he was knocked off his bike by a car and knocked his head on the curb. The whole surfing community in Durban paddled out as his family spread his ashes. I think the surfing award is now named after him…RIP young man.

    @All Black:
    Thank you for your thoughts. I knew him fairly well but have to admit I didn’t know his name until after he died. (My quest is to get to know all those boys by name now.) He used to often walk up and down the side line keeping me company while taking the photos – he would also often be ball boy. Yes, he smiled and laughed and played pranks … and when he sung “Boys of Glenwood” he sang it with every fibre of his body. He was also one of the 40 or so boys who stuck around in the freezing cold when Glenwood played Pinetown. They didn’t have to stay but they did and all sang, and cheered as if it was a major game. RIP Manzinn :cry:

    Cyndi has featured a number of photos of Manzini on her photographic site. What is so striking is how full of life and enthusiam this youngster was. How profoundly tragic. I’m sure the Glenwood community will struggle to come to terms with this – thanks for your thoughts All Black.

    To all the Glenwood folk, really sorry to hear about the U14 boy who died yesterday. So tragic. Our thoughts are with you all.

    @All Black: I was told the 3 KC SA Schools story comes from the Witness and the newspaper printed an apology to Mike Hill the writer and MC the following day. The paper said the error crept in at sub editing phase.

    I do believe there are 3 College supporters at 1, 2 and 3 in the Superbru table.

    Just saw that they claim this ids the first time in KZN that one school got 3 SA schools players in the same year. Obviously did not do his homework as College has had 3 and 4 in the same year, including the Captain. Seems shortsighted by the fellow not to get facts correct before posting an article.

    @star: I see you got the Chad le Clos floating trophy. Besides the obvious play on words and the Westville connection – is there something I missed?

    Best moustache! I only had a handle-bar for Movember a few years back. Dissapointed now, because I thought I would get biggest whinger or most passionate :wink:

    Quite upset about that award actually. It is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. I am definately a better ref than Bryce so should have been second worst.

    Yes – I reffed the Westville U15A against Voortrekker/Port Natal – which Westville won handsomely if I recall. Also did U16A against DHS (Westville won in the end but made a meal of it in the 1st half) and U16A vs Pionier (Westville thrashed them).

    @ Greenblooded- I notice you ref skills have been brought into question. Did you ever ref a Westville U15A game as I need excuses and someone to blame?
