Glenwood playing at a frantic pace throughout the match, ran in 8 tries to beat DHS 45-21. Apart from the speed of execution, support play and good handling were key in this victory. Outstanding Glenwood performances were delivered the big ball carrier Marco Palvie, who is undoubtedly one of the KZN players of the season, playmaker Jerome Bossr who ghosted through several gaps and busy Christopher Klopper who’s mobility and never-lapsing workrate as a prop continue to catch the eye.
For DHS their captain Mthokozisi Ntuli was very good all-round and not too much could fault could be found with the performance of Gareth Simpson at scrumhalf. The 3 DHS tries came from two misdirected lineout throws which ended up in the hands of unmarked players at the back and goal-line pressure which caused their opponents to fumble the ball.

@McCulleys Workshop: Imagine my disappointment, when I clicked on that link, to find nothing. Google did however suggest http://www.flagellation.com/ …. which the netnanny at my current client suggested might be different to what I expected …
@McCulleys Workshop: I don’t consider about 5 bloggers being ‘Glenwood’ but others might do…
@Grasshopper: I reckon he changes it to http://www.glenwoodbashthemselves.co.za
@GreenBlooded: I reckon Beet changes this blog to http://www.letsbashglenwoodrugby.co.za. It would be far more applicable to the conversation on here…
@Thumper:
It’s a binary thing for me. Either it’s okay or it’s not okay – can’t have it both ways. If you live in a glass house, the stone you throw will break the other oke’s window just a badly as the 10 stones he throws at you. Ou Star has made a career on this forum of pointing fingers at others and coming up with wonderfully crafted justifications when his peeps do the same thing. For me, I’m like ou George Dubya. Either you are for it or against it, be it recruitment or sending 2nd team players to trials. Can’t be both. End of rant.
@GreenBlooded</GW 2nd team representation was an overkill by comparison!
@Thumper:
I think there were some College and Westville boys who also went.
@Thumper: To accommodate the Voortrekker 1st XV who played college 2nds.
College 3rds beat DHS 2nds – so seemed like a good strength vs strength match?
@GreenBlooded: Makes no sense, especially with all the GW 2nd team players that went to CW trials!!
@Thumper:
Maybe DHS should answer that since they would have been the ones to request the stagger?
@umbiloburger: Why do College 3rds play DHS 2nds (37-5 College) and Glenwood 2nds play Dhs 2nds?
@star: For the record the 2nd team match only lasted about 40 minutes due to late starts and the need for the 1stXV to start by 14:00. Those extra 20 minutes may have produced a different score….either way I guess.
Again agree 100%. It is such a divisive term and undermines the credibility of some truly great players. Westville’s Tony M is a revelation and I hope he has a good run on Dixon’s this Saturday.
@star:
“Mukendi for example is certainly there on the very best of merit”
Come to think of it, I can’t think of one schoolboy PD player who isn’t in his school 1st XV on merit. Which begs the question why there is still a requirement for a PD quota? It’s 2015. We need to move on from this……..
@GreenBlooded: 100% and whether the 1ST team player was clearly better would hopefully be resolved by a proper, functioning and transparent selection process. One that all stakeholders have confidence in.
With regarding to crafting rules ( which sounds a bit spurious) as a coach can you honestly not say who your first choice players are? eg Are Cooper/Chadwick not fringe players to the likes of Bissie and Beast?
@Grasshopper: We are all aware of the challenges that comes with that unfortunate term. Mukendi for example is certainly there on the very best of merit. I also a bit tired of certain schools hiding behind that term as a reason for their selections. Believe it or not but other schools also have ” qualifying ” players. Let me give you an example from a Westville perspective. In 2013/14 and 15 Westville have had 3 SA U20 props who would have qualified as PD at CW. Yet during the related CW period( 2011-2013) there were only 2 CW props( who were non starters). That means a conversion rate of 150 % from provincial to national. Surely it should be substantially the other way around. There are only 2 possible explanations. That the players suddenly became so much better or that the original selections were defective. Go figure. At some point there has to be some sort of reconciliation and yet we go year by year with these huge unexplained gaps.
@star:
I’d just like to add a small amendment if you’ll indulge me.
4) A 2nd XV regular player should not be considered when there is clearly a better first XV regular player from another school available.
@star:
If you want to craft rules to suit a specific situation then fine. Just understand that the rules can’t be changed later when they no longer suit you. The “Fringe Players Regulations According to Star” are now a matter or record.
@GreenBlooded: Ok then let me not fail.
The only times a second/fringe player should be considered is where
1) it is a strong 2nd team with commensurate results
2) the player is blocked by an exception player( as was the case last year with Palvie/Jaco and is the case with Lee/HP.)
3) Even if the 2 points above are in play , the selection of the fringe players must be the exception and not the rule.
Let us apply to Westville
1) Strong 2nd team ( currently undefeated locally- might change on Saturday as the boy is injured )
2) I have already discussed Lee. With regard to the wing , he was a GK player( along with Smit and Stoltz from Westville) and so has the necessary pedigree. He played the entire night series at PN and even had a 1st team run at KERF last year. There are sometimes anomalies that arise in school selections and he would certainly be one that qualifies.( without going into too much detail)
3) This I believe is the 1st time in Westville’s history that they have had 2 2nd team selections at this level and therefore is certainly the exception and not the rule. I think one of the last times was the selection of C. Wright which further proves my point of selection anomalies.
And now to our friends from GW.
1) Indifferent 2nd team season having lost to College and Kearsney and battled to best DHS
2) Several of the first choice players eg scrumhalf and locks did not make the trial finals and therefore cannot be considered a” Jaco.”
3) When last was a GW 2nd team not represented by multiple selections and therefore is the rule rather than the exception.
I think I will rest my case
@beet:
Yes. To do it twice is unforgiveable!
@star:
You never fail me when it comes to a “It’s okay when Westville do it” arguement.
@GreenBlooded: @star: I agree that it’s risky to go to the back of the lineout 5m out – attack or defence. In both lineout cases on Saturday the hookers where looking for the safer option at the front but overshot. 1 was a DHS attacking throw so not too bad. Maybe more of an issue is why a player was left unmarked at the back of a lineout so near the tryline.
@star: It’s called PD, unfortunately…
@Grasshopper: But they are still fringe players( not first choice) and you must remember all schools are in the same boat. My son’s 1st team caps for example are more than double his 2nd team caps and yet I would still call him a fringe player as he is not first choice. Why should GW fringe and 2nd team players who have played predominately for a weak second team( just beat DHS 5-3 through a last minute try) get undue preference. It is a question of pushing boundaries and hoping that no one will care when it becomes the norm.
Kicking for poles needs some urgent attention during the week. A big game against Westville will undoubtedly be a close one and could very well be decided by a few points either way… kicking will be crucial!!!
Also i fell that the Glewood loosies play too loose. They need to tighten up a little and protect the ball better. The holes will come later in the game for them to exploit (as happened in the College game) but they allowed DHS to get numerous ruck turmovers simply due to lack of numbers to protect possession at ruck time! Could prove costly against a better side.
I still think this is a very talented DHS side who have been on the wrong end of some heavy scores. i still cant understand it!
@star: Should I repeat Blose is a 1st team player, has more than 10 caps. Same with the props selected in the Academy team. These days schools have about 25 guys having played 1st team, maybe more. This doesn’t mean they play a squad system, but means it’s more a 1st squad and 2nd’s when they play traditional fixtures….
I made the exact same comment and was corrected by my son who said the target in the one instance was the no 4 jumper who should also be a pretty safe option. It was just a really bad throw. Lee the Westville ” oke” who you have brought into the fray regarding the 2nd team players in the CW/Academy debate was one of the standout throwers at trials( or so I was told ) You must remember that Palvie was an Academy player last year and he was a fringe first team player due to the presence of one Jaco C. The same can be said for Lee and HP. These situations do sometimes arise and should not be used to vindicate other overreaching situations. The fact that the GW 2nd team has 4X the tight 5 KZN selections of the 1st teams of 6 tier one schools( College, Kearsney ,Hilton, DHS,NW, and SC) would I believe constitute such a situation. As you always say ” call the clear and obvious”.
Never understood the logic of throwing to the back of an attacking 5m lineout. For one thing – the defending backs have a 5m head start if the throw is slightly long. Keep it simple – no 2 jumper then maul or swing it from there. As mentioned in the article – 2 tries from this basic error.
