@Oldschol: “quote: Glenwood don’t really hunt in the KZN stable anymore , take for example this years u14A side …I think there are only 3 lads from KZN in the starting line up … the rest of the side from outside the province ….”

Given this statement above – how many of the team members above made representative U13 level teams in other provinces? Any idea?

Will be interested to see where these boys are heading off to at High School – now that “hunting” season is open for these U13’s – and their price has obviously gone up since they made the teams :-P

Agreed beet. Good luck to all the teams. All of them are very able and good teams capable of doing us proud and pulling off some good wins.

All 3 U18 teams and the U16 teams should do us proud.

Looking forward to the business end now.

Trusting for an injury free run for all involved.

@Pedantic: I don’t think I’m going to use up much more of my energy on that topic this year. All the comments I’ve made stand and are there on the other threads for all to read. Hopefully it’s made a little bit of a difference, caused a few officials at various schools to think more carefully about whether they are doing all that’s reasonably expected to give rugby players at their schools an equal shot and if not coming up with a plans of action. I believe there is room for improvements.

So for now complaining season is over! It’s time to once again appreciate the action on the field. All the best to the players that made the KZN youth teams. May they seize the opportunity and do KZN proud. For those that missed out, hopefully they keep your chins up and surprise us all with great performances.

@Tarpeys: Lombard made the B team – unfortunately he started in Possibles team and picked up a shoulder injury in the opening minutes of the game and did not have a chance to change the selectors minds.

@beet: Yeah, it could tough hanging on to him, that’s incredible. There are some decent backline players who’ll be sitting at home and he will be on the big GK stage and shop window. I can think of Kershaw (MHS), Marx( HC) , Lombard, and Schwartz (both Westville) who seem to have missed out.

@Vleis: KZNCD plays in acadamy week as far as i can remember.
VKB week is a u/19 tournament where some smaller disbanded unions (old lion cup teams) play. They also pick a team after the weeks rugby that tours overseas(Italy, Ireland and france last three years).
Northern Natal for interest sake picks a U/18 team that goes to zululand where a regional team is picked for kzn trials. This year plus/minus 14 boys from northern natal are involved in kzn/kzncd teams. The unsuccessful boys returns to the northern natal team where some U/19’s are added and then go to the VKB week as a Northern Natal/Lammergeyer team

@Pedantic: Glenwood with 7 in the CW, 7 in the Academy and 7 in the GK side, means 21 out of 66, almost a third. It’s still over kill in my opinion. The 7 in the CW side is about right, a couple are lucky….won’t say who….

I was only commenting on what I saw at the MHS game , I have no doubt the others deserve to be in the Craven Week team.

Against MHS, I thought that Bossr was the outstanding player on the field ( from both teams ).

    @beet: The overall conversion % is 29.
Westville’s conversion is almost double at 57% . Must mean they have talented recruiters
    Phipson Y
    Redgard Y
    Lombard Y
    Chidzonga Y
    Schoeman N
Schwartz N ( Finals so very close)
Ntshangase N ( Not sure if he went to Westville)
The big surprize is Schoeman who was a real machine at WSPS and at U14/ and U15 level. I wonder what happened there.
It is also interesting that T. Gumede( Academy 8) was at Westville as a C team player but has bounced back very nicely. Well done to him.
With regards the CW team. while the attacking flair of the center combination cannot be faulted( once they understand each others lines), I hope the defensive capabilities will stand the test against what will be some pretty abrasive opposition.

    @beet: Good afternoon to everyone,
As you travel upcountry past pietermaritzburg and enter the vast desert there is a small town called Glencoe with one player in the U/16 invitational team to play the pumas. As you travel one hour further into the desert you will find a slightly bigger town called vryheid with one player in the craven week team for the second time in two years. The rest of the players from this part of the dessert that attented the final trials in the oasis called Pietermaritzburg could be chosen for a team called the “Kwa Zulu Natal country distrcts” ,but it seems to be done in secret as no team sheet is available anywhere ?

{GK Team} I’m really glad to see Mjara and Holder in the A team – they both really put up their hands in the Possibles/Probables game.

The front row seems to be needing some work as there seemed to not be a lot of cohesion in this area – and I’m sure the coaching team will spend some time on this aspect. surprised to see Schwultz and Barnes not making the starting 15 on the team sheet. Loose forwards looking good and certainly a position that the selectors must be happy with.

From the MHS point of view , I think that Anele Songca is a surprise selection; it is perhaps also a bit surprising that Liam Furniss never made the Craven Week team considering he can cover 13,14 & 15 ( and he has been in decent form this year ).

The two Kearsney boys Dixon and Tedder are outstanding , based on what I saw in their game vs MHS.

From a Glenwood point of view ( based purely on their game vs MHS ) , Bossr is the one player from that game that stood out , other than that I don’t remember any of their players standing out. One has to ask , if he would not have benefitted more from going to the Academy Week , where he would have played in all the games.

@umbiloburger: haha! If he has even half the talent of his uncle who played in the 64 & 65 Glenwood side, Glenwood will want to secure him now!

@GreenBlooded: Another one….Hopper, slow done big guy  what do they call people who use condoms to prevent pregnancy?????? Parents

Sorry, this is a rugby Blog. My only raised eyebrow was Du Randt at 13. He is good but hasn’t had a good run in 2015.

@beet: Aphiwe Febana moved back to PE and joined Grey PE where he has struggled for form and subsequently missed out on EP selection altogether.

Between injured Kevin Smit and Etienne Marx 2 former Grant Khomo players, KZN lost 2 outstanding shots at having a genuine fetcher in the CW mix.

Ruan van Rensburg picked up an injury at Wildeklawer and did not participate in trials.

Darren McGhee didn’t play at final trials after being invited – presumably injured.

Ruben Vosloo who offered so much promise as a gr11, just couldn’t seem to lift his game to that next level required to gain youth week selection, otherwise all the others pretty much in the KZN mix

Here’s my 2 posts combined from way back in November 2014 when I picked a KZN u17 Private School vs a KZN u17 Government School team. http://blog.schoolboyrugby.co.za/?p=9915 Interesting journey for some players.

beet on 19 November, 2014 at 12:34 said: Edit

u17 Private Schools XV just off the top of my head

    1 Andrew Peverelle HC
    2 Matt Wiseman MHS
    3 Lee-Marvin Mazibuko MHS
    4 Tristan Dixon KC
    5 Jordan Sinsink-Clee MHS
6 – 8 Etienne Marx HC / Ruben Vosloo CC / Mulalo Sadiki MHS / Sebastian Desvaux de Marigny HC
    9 Matt Dahl HC
    10 Bader Pretorius MHS
    11 Darren McGee HC
    12 Daniel Loftus HC
    13 James Tedder KC
    14 Liam Furniss MHS
    15 Victor Foster MHS

Sorry I don’t know the St Charles boys well enough but hear they have a good prop in the mix.

And for the fun of it a quick pick Govt school XV

    1 Jordan Els Westville
    2 Aphiwe Febana DHS
    3 Khutha Mchunu Glenwood
    4 Fudge Qoma Westville
    5 Nama Xaba Glenwood
    6 Kevin Smit Glenwood
    7 Mthokozisi Ntuli DHS
    8 Marco Palvie Glenwood
    9 Gareth Simpson DHS
    10 Matt Kriel Maritzburg College
    11 Xolisa Guma Maritzburg College
    12 Donovan Du Randt Glenwood
    13 Ruan van Rensburg Glenwood
    14 Ilunga Mukendi Glenwood
    15 Jayden Morgan Glenwood

I can think of a few u16s who will up right there as well.

Here is the KZN u13 Craven Week team from 2010. It looks like the conversion rate of u13 to u18 Craven Week will be much lower than the normal low this year. I wonder how many of the boys on this list got top high school bursaries as a result of their u13 achievements.

    1 Joshua Thomas
    2 Samuel Swanepoel
    3 Franco Erasmus
    4 Brandon Staples
    5 Henjolah Peters
    6 Matt Wiseman
    7 Thandwayinkosi Mnyandu
    8 Daniel Rust (Captain)
    9 Matthew Dahl
    10 Schalk van Wyk
    11 Jeandre Bekker
    12 Dexton Rossouw
    13 Collin Brunsdon
    14 Zibusiso Dlomo
    15 Lwazi Moletshe
    16 Ntuthuko Mthembu
    17 Kuyezeka Xaba
    18 Sanele Sithole
    19 Lungisani Mcoyi
    19 Mzizi Ngwenya
    20 Siyabonga Khalishwayo
    22 Ndumiso Madonda

Well done to all the boys selected! Im not going to comment on who deserves to be in the side and who doesn’t. I will just say something about the boys who made it that i coached at club.

I can honestly say that Hendrik Prinsloo is by far the best rugby player i have ever coached, i hope that whoever coaches him in years to come give him some form of leadership role, he is the kind of boy that others will follow into battle.

Gareth Simpson is a fantastic rugby player. I know he is playing in a DHS side that is struggling right now, but that boy has a rugby brain 2nd to none. If South African rugby teams didnt have such an obsession with size, he could go all the way to the very top.

Best of luck and safe travels to all the boys and coaches!

I always thought College were possible for 3, didn’t see Khudzai Munangi coming but he’s a top top lad, focussed and a great work ethic, very happy for him. Thought Guma and Matt Kriel had a shot. For the rest I’ve said my piece.

Good CW side, but Academy looks a mess. Maduna & Blose are PD picks, both good players though…

@Star @gungets tuft – seems like all our fears where unfounded. And here I was thinking they were just there to hold the tackle bags… Great to see Clifton with a cap.
