Report

Day one of the Paarl Boys High U15 festival produced some scintillating rugby with running rugby being the order of the day. The two teams of the day were Grey College and HJS. Botha these teams had good wins. The KZN teams had mixed fortunes with only Glenwood having to fight hard to beat Paul Roos. Opting to take quick tap penalties instead of kicking points certain didn’t help matters for the Natalians.

There were a number of players that stood out from day one. However the second centre from Grey College, Wyclef Vlitoor, was the back line player that stood out. He had a brilliant game against Paarl Gym. For the hosts it was their scrum half JG De Bruin that made a huge impact against Garsfontein. He kept the defense honest around the fringes which created space on the outside for the backs.

Day Two
Another day of festival rugby was enjoyed at Paarl Boys. The matches were all tough encounters with several going down to the wire. Westville had several chances against Brackenfell but didn’t capitalize on them. Paarl Gim were very lucky to scrape through with a last minute penalty against a very good Stellenberg team. The win meant a lot to the team from Paarl with huge celebrations at the final whistle. For Stellenberg their fly half Nivan Peterson had an outstanding game.

Glenwood caused the upset of the day with a hard fought 15-13 win over hosts Paarl Boys High. In what was an outstanding display of running rugby and it was Glenwood’s Dylan Pretorius and Rynardt Jonker that had the better of the opposition with Reuben Gouws scoring both of Glenwoods tries.
Day Three
There were some very tired legs on day three but nevertheless the calibre of game was brilliant. Glenwood maintained their unbeaten tour with a comfortable win over Brackenfell. For the Durban boys Aaron LaRue score a hat trick of tries. The hosts had a very good match against SACS winning comfortably in the end.

Paarl Gim ended their tour on a loss after Menlo Park were able to produce a good performance. In the end of this magnificently run festival there were only two unbeaten teams in Glenwood and Grey College.

Rumour has it that Grey u\15 have never lost a match at this u15 tournament in the 11 years of its existence. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Well done to the Grey boys on a very successful tournament once again. Hard work still lies ahead though.

Now Glenwood, listen carefully……keep these boys together, back them fully, coach them well and DO NOT buy in anymore players up to matric and they will reward you. Loyalty builds trust, these boys will play for each other like brothers…..here endeth the lesson…

@BoishaaiPa: Very talented team HJS. There weren’t number 1 for nothing last year. I believe a couple of the boys left last year to join PRG. They are going to bounce back from this loss.

@umbiloburger: Yes, it was a great game..closely contested. I was watching it from the tent. One of my friends has two sons who is both coaching at Glenwood.. I was sitting with them watching the game..I just thought HJS should have taken at least one of those three penalties awarded…All three were very kickable. We were also penalized a lot at ruck time..hopefully they will work on both those aspects before we go up to Bloem on the 2nd of May!

@BoishaaiPa: It think it was a brilliant display of what school boy rugby should be. The GW midfield was brilliant as were the HJS loosies. Gim haven’t looked slick but they have really played hard and in their true tradition have never given up. GW were very keen to play them on Saturday.

Lessons learned..Rugby 101..penalties in front of posts should be taken. 6 easy points in a tight game is vital.

Hats off to Paarl Gym for matching Stellenberg as their opponent, many “big” schools would have dodged that one.

The real shock of the day was the transformation of the Grey side compared to 2014.

What happened ? Who is the coach ?

    Very impressive.

@Maroon: ‘n Facelift was beslis in orde, gedink julle sou dit aangespreek. Julle het ‘n lekker sterk Boland stut bygekry, maar ons sê weer dankie vir die goeie PRG haker in ruil!

The “lesser known” teams of Brackenfell and Stellenberg will provide a good test for opponents at this tournament and will be well worth watching. Brackenfell impressed as u14’s last year and gave Boland a very good examination Saturday past, before eventually going down 6-26. Likewise Stellenberg impressed on Saturday against a very well coached and talented Boishaai outfit, going down 3-19 (in the corresponding fixture last year they lost 0-75).

The Paul Roos, Paarl Gym and Framesby groups are not the strongest in recent years in my opinion, although they may well have progressed from last year.

SACS, Oakdale and Boland were competitive last year. SACS played like a well coached unit Saturday, while Boland, after a rusty first half, played good structures and to their strengths in the second half.
