KZN U16 Grant Khomo Player Data

The KZN Under 16 squad had an excellent week at the Grant Khomo inter provincial tournament, winning 2 out of 3 games with the single loss being a nailbiter against a physical Eastern Cape side.

It’s interesting to look at the physical make-up of the KZN Squad – physically a much smaller team  than the majority of the sides at Grant Khomo Week and dispelling the myth that KZN selectors go for size ahead of skill. Only 4 of the 22 were selected for KZN Under 13 Craven Week which illustrates the diverse development of the players from primary to high school.

A fair number of the “late developers” have come through the provincial youth club ranks, showing that the extra work put in during the 3rd term has certainly assisted in their development.

Not one kid over 6foot3! Wow that is concerning but plenty time to grow in the next year. I know I grew a foot in a year between 14 and 15 so we will see. 116kg at 179cm will make the kid pretty over-weight, maybe some puppy fat there. Methinks off season fitness and cardio should get him down to about 105kg which is perfect for his height. Interesting to see where all the Glenwood boys came from, all over the province and country :)

Next years U16s will have some very tall 1.9m + locks in it. Many tall boys there with Jj Peters probably being the tallest. If he plays rugby next year he will surely have a good chance in making KZN again.

The lock heights also point to an ongoing obstacle that KZN teams have to overcome at lineouts. When our teams come up against the likes of Affies and KES, its a huge disadvantage. Quality ball is an issue when turnovers aren’t being conceded. Really tough on us is this genes thing
